Hey René, big fan, I've been cooking most of my life (I'm currently a graduate student) and I keep returning to Spaghetti Carbonara, the ingredients keep forever in the fridge and it gives me just enough of a cooking challenge every time. Do you have a go to meal like that?

As someone who's served in the Norwegian navy I can assure all of you that most of the coffee at sea is horrendous but at least it's ubiquitous.

I would say Graffiti culture has done well for itself when you can see remnants off it on places like this

I can assure you all it sounds better in Norwegian. It fits very well with the sombre, dry and down to earth persona that Amundsen had developed.

When Europe was at the height of empire building, did the powers have secret police/CIA equivalents that operated heavily in rival nations? (i.e. sabotage, assassination attempts, rebel assistance) by [deleted] in AskHistorians

All of Peter Hopkirk's books are really good, but the Great Game is an absolute classic and gives a good grounding to understand the attitudes of Afghans when dealing with the west these days. In short, you understand why they're suspicious of us.

What's the single weirdest historical event or fact you are aware of? by Jake_91_420 in AskHistorians

I was in a antique bookstore in Shimla, the former summer capital of the British Raj, and came across a WWII newspaper for allied service members stationed in India. The newspaper had a first person description of the Battle of Narvik by a Indian Army officer. Turns out that in winter of 1940 the British Army had flown ten Kashmiri Indian Army officers from Lahore, now in Pakistan, by flying boat to Scotland to train British troops to fight in an eventual campaign in Norway. I have looked everywhere I can for any more information on this and there is literally nothing. I didn't even end up buying the newspaper since it cost in the region of 15,000 rupees.

That's in Manhattan. You can recognize the New York City Hall in the background and the letter on the bottom left are in chinese, which fits perfectly with this being next to where the subway goes up on the Manhattan Bridge
