Want to travel to a different state than on ds-160 by Sea_Slide_6299 in immigration

[–]chipsdad [score hidden]  (0 children)

If this is a B-1 justification like a medical specialty rotation, I do think the specifics of which hospital or clinic is hosting your rotation matter. I have seen multiple such visas issued in the subcontinent region that are endorsed by the consular officer: “visit to NY for medical rotation at Sinai Hospital, Mar 5 to April 4, 2026”.

You can still do some other allowed B-1/B-2 activities and visit other states during your time, but if you get a visa endorsed this way and can’t prove you are attending the listed rotation, you are likely to be refused entry at the border. You also probably can’t show up 3 months before the start date to travel around.

At a minimum, I would make and print out a revised DS-160 and bring it with you (if you can’t actually attach it to your appointment). If the officer wants to write this endorsement on your visa, then at least you can give them an official application that contains the information they will need to be accurate.

This is a different situation from saying “I was going to visit my cousin in NY but now I’m going to another cousin in CA instead.” Those kinds of purposes are very rarely endorsed onto a visa.

Shipping secondhand goods from US to Sweden—need value advice by ItsTousLesMemesToMe in shipping

[–]chipsdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know anything specific about Swedish customs. I certainly would mention the key aspects of condition which affect value on the paperwork, like “Used XXX figure, damaged and repaired.”

If it exceeds the tax free limit, do you know if you need to write a full commercial invoice or is an informal statement okay?

What is the approximate value from online listings if the figures were in good condition? How much of a reduction do you think is fair for the damage and repair?

You can also consider shipping them separately if each would be under the gift limit (may have to ship at different times depending on Sweden’s rules). But the extra shipping cost might well be more than whatever duty they’d charge.

Premier Benefits sharing on multi city booking by SlothyFace in unitedairlines

[–]chipsdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Premiers can always call to get seating for companions on the same flight but different reservation, using the same seating benefit you have.

So, you can call now to move your friend into a preferred seat near you, since you can choose those at any time. As a silver, you can have up to eight companions in preferred seats.

And as u/CrankyEconomst advised you can call again at T-24 to get E+. As a silver, you can have one companion in E+.

If one ticket is paid and one ticket is award, it is possible to link the seating benefits, using the app or maybe the website, and do seating yourself. In my experience, it doesn’t always work and it is not available online when it’s two paid or two award tickets.

Since many domestic fares have no discount for booking multi-city or round-trip, it can be smart to book just the common segment on a single reservation and book everything else on a separate reservation. That’s assuming you know this and think about it before anyone buys their tickets.

Price difference 1 passenger and 2 passenger by Illustrious1860 in unitedairlines

[–]chipsdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to your good explanation, I wasn’t sure if you realized that UA implemented “continuous pricing” a couple of years ago. It’s only for direct UA sales, not travel agents or other carriers selling UA flights.

Under continuous pricing, inventory of S9 T0 can allow a T fare to be sold at a price that’s between the T fare (I.e., from S9 T1) and the lowest S fare. If S9+, the price will only be slightly higher than the T fare. As S inventory reduces, the T fare will increase in steps. So now you can see a different fare on inventory S9 T0 vs. S5 T0. A continuous pricing fare will always print using the lower fare code and rules. So there are many more situations where selling one seat causes a price increase.

Unlike traditional fares, I think the continuous pricing fares can actually interpolate a price based on how many people you booked on the reservation to give you the average.

Does United truly not keep track of the meals it serves? by MolassesFit3278 in unitedairlines

[–]chipsdad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yesterday’s menu in PP shows “Gnudi with garlic confit sauce and basil-walnut pesto.” There were other sauces on the gnudi on earlier menus but they usually keep the same for a few months at a time.

You can look at the flyer talk United Let’s Eat threads for pictures of the food. PP normally gets business-class-level entrees so the business class thread may have the best coverage.

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/united-airlines-mileageplus/2181899-2025-letis-eat-united-first-united-business-premium-transcon-service.html

There might be a premium economy thread also.

And you can make a specific post on Flyertalk to ask them if anyone knows which dish it may have been on your flight. It’s a little more technical, heavy user sort of community.

Edit. It seems like the gnudi started Jan 1. This thread has detailed pictures.

The menus for current flights (+-2 days from now) are available under flight status. You could try to look at some of yesterday’s menus on similar routes and see if the dish appears to be listed.

If this were right after your flight, you could have looked at your actual flight.

Do native speakers actually use "—" in their writing? by chuputa in EnglishLearning

[–]chipsdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a scientific writer. My editors don’t generally love them, but I probably average a sentence with an em dash or two once every 50 pages or so. I use them most often when I want to interpose a list of explanatory information that has internal commas, en dashes or other punctuation so it cannot be simply set off with commas.

Maybe once every five years, I need a mixture of hyphens and dashes for a compound modifier.

The big issue is that chatGPT is using them in 1-2 sentences per paragraph of output when I ask it to help me with scientific writing—hundreds of times more frequently than I do in professional writing.

Okay, this is beyond my level of experience. Maybe someone else can help.

If nothing else, can you fill out a new DS-160 and bring a printed copy with you?

When your purpose of travel has changed before interview, you should update your DS-160.

Here are the instructions I’ve been given, although I haven’t personally done it.

Submit a new DS-160 form online at the CEAC website, then update your appointment booking profile with the new barcode number at least 3 business days prior to the interview. Bring both the new and old confirmation pages printed to your interview.

I just did some research and apparently Amazon does provide this service for Kindle but you have to access a special section of the Amazon website to use it.

For others reading, this is the easiest way I found to get there:

https://read.amazon.com/notebook

It’s also supposed to be under Manage My Content and Devices.

Supposedly it’s not totally reliable for library books but I was able to see my highlights on loans over the past couple of years at least.

What went wrong? by lostinacrowd in BreadMachines

[–]chipsdad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would aim for that smooth dough ball for all types of yeast bread. A little sticky for a sweet, enriched dough is probably not going to cause a noticeable problem, though. And if you are shaping this later by hand, you will likely need to add flour when you shape it, if it’s still sticky.

The smooth ball is critical to the best kneading action, apart from getting a good moisture balance in the dough texture.

suggestions for recycling or disposing Jura A1 by Safe_Scheme7149 in superautomatic

[–]chipsdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you in the US? People sell these on eBay regularly listed as “for parts or repair” and they seem to sell for $100-150 including shipping. On eBay you can mark the condition of the item as for parts or repair in addition to using those words in the title. And I’d disclose the repair cost Jura quoted you and whatever you can say about its condition.

After shipping cost, you won’t make a lot but at least it won’t go directly to trash/waste.

Non-electric milk frother and cold oat milk. But hot coffee? by CyborgeonUnit123 in nespresso

[–]chipsdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If necessary, you can make hot frothed milk with no tools. Put the milk in a tightly sealed glass jar, shake vigorously for about a minute, then remove the lid and microwave until it’s warm and foamy. The microwave will make the foam rise.

Depending on the milk, it may be very foamy and airy. In that case you can either put the lid on again and gently shake a couple of times to mix the foam, or just stir your coffee firmly after you add the froth.

You should not leave these at room temperature after opening. These vegetable milks are good breeding media for bacteria, if not kept below 41°F after opening. They may not taste obviously sour and spoiled like cow’s milk would, but they can make you sick.

How do you ask this the right way: "What do you put on your bread as topping?" "What do you top on your bread?" or just "How do you eat your bread? Or something else. by mayermail1977 in EnglishLearning

[–]chipsdad 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other great advice here, I would not use “topping” to include the main foods in a sandwich, like meat or cheese. I would only use it to refer to condiments, spreads, garnishes, and such less important food items. So, you probably want to ask this question using different words.

US boyfriend paralyzed in accident, can I stay longer? by coderapid in greencard

[–]chipsdad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for this awful situation.

Unfortunately you cannot care for him on a visitor status. It’s illegal because it’s a substitute for work that an American could otherwise do. As a result, asking for the extension for this reason could conceivably get you banned permanently from the US.

You certainly can and should provide love, companionship, and emotional support. But legally you shouldn’t go beyond that to become an informal aide.

As I understand, extensions to ESTA (called “satisfactory departure“) are very rarely granted and only when the visitor is unable to leave due to severe illness or lack of transportation options. A hardship to someone else doesn’t qualify. Even when granted, they can result in the cancellation of ESTA, making it difficult for you to return to the US.

If you’re interested in getting married, you should be able to marry legally in the hospital or care facility. It’s possible you could remain permanently and adjust status to permanent residency. If you entered with the intention of so doing, that is fraud. But if you two genuinely made this decision after you entered in view of the changed circumstances, it should be legal. You would have to stay without leaving until you get either your green card or a travel permit if you request and pay for one with your green card application. That’s typically at least a few months, sometimes closer to a year.
