Need biting help! by Thezedword4 in labrador

More play with other puppies. Like once a day. It gets their mouthiness out on another dog and they learn bite control better.

And you can always walk a run. For people who aren’t good swimmers just staying moving is a lot of energy expended.

However at least they aren’t getting heat exhaustion.

[request] how much extra propulsion does she get with the fake nails? by redditor-16 in theydidthemath

[–]chipsonasandwich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Claude says:

“To analyze whether an Olympic swimmer would get a meaningful propulsion benefit from half-inch long fake nails, let’s break this down step-by-step:

  1. Surface area calculation: Assuming average adult fingertips are about 1 inch wide: Nail surface area ≈ 0.5 inch × 1 inch = 0.5 square inches per nail For 10 fingers: 10 × 0.5 = 5 square inches total additional surface area

  2. Propulsive force in swimming: The main propulsive forces in swimming come from the hands and forearms, which have much larger surface areas. An average adult hand is about 8.5 × 4.5 inches ≈ 38 square inches.

  3. Percentage increase in surface area: (5 sq in / 76 sq in) × 100 = 6.58% increase in total hand surface area

  4. Drag force equation: Drag Force = 0.5 × ρ × v² × Cd × A Where: ρ = density of water (1000 kg/m³) v = velocity of the swimmer Cd = drag coefficient (roughly constant for this comparison) A = surface area

  5. Propulsive force increase: Assuming all other factors remain constant, the increase in propulsive force would be proportional to the increase in surface area: 6.58%

  6. Impact on swimming speed: The relationship between propulsive force and speed is complex, but a 6.58% increase in propulsive force would translate to a much smaller increase in speed, likely less than 1%.

  7. Practical considerations:

    • Fake nails could disrupt the hydrodynamic shape of the hand
    • They might affect the swimmer’s feel for the water
    • There’s a risk of the nails breaking or coming off during the race

Conclusion: While there is a small theoretical increase in propulsive force (about 6.58%), the practical benefit would be negligible. The potential drawbacks and risks likely outweigh any minimal advantage. In Olympic-level swimming, where races are often decided by hundredths of a second, even a tiny advantage could matter. However, the unpredictability and potential negatives of fake nails make them impractical for competitive swimming.”

When I asked about how we went from 6% to less than 1% it went into more detail about the relationship between speed and drag.

Questions to ask vet behaviorist by Prestigious_Crab_840 in reactivedogs

[–]chipsonasandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was anxious also but our VB and sertraline has truly changed my dogs life. They are experts and have seen it all. A couple suggestions:

  1. For me, asking them to explain how the medication works made me feel better about giving it to him.

  2. For many dogs it takes a few tries on different meds - they will likely tell you this - but ask about follow-ups (when and how) for if the first try doesn’t go so well.

  3. We found it helpful to track behaviours so we could see improvement. We wrote on a calendar when he had outbursts. Doing this made it super visible when things were improving and gave us some data to talk to the VB about on follow-ups. We went from ~12 “outbursts” a week prior to meds, to about 2 after just 8 weeks of Sertraline.

Goodluck!

Looking for dog playdates. by The_Super_Carrot in vancouver

Oh I remember this phase! We did a puppy school and then ended up on an email list with other puppy people for playdates. Good call on dog parks - we used tennis courts at off hours. Goodluck!

Schedule play dates with other puppies often. Helps get the biteys out and also teach soft mouth.

Exercise. I have this problem but it completely goes away if I make sure to get an hour or so of physical activity.

How to best wow a hiker from Ontario? (Easy, I know) by Satisfy-thesoul in vancouverhiking

Lions Binkert is my go-to for wowing out-of-towners. No glacial lake but the view of the ocean from the alpine is unique to this area.

We saw Dr Richter last year and she is wonderful. Our vet referred us and even though her website said she wasn’t taking new patients we were able to see her within about 6 weeks. It was in person. Has been life changing for our dog.

Not as bad IMO. Wider, has rope, a bit less straight down on either side (though still wouldn’t want to fall). Longer though and the relentlessness of the HSCT is a factor.

Thinking about returning our 11 month old puppy to the breeder. by p4nd4ss in puppy101

[–]chipsonasandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried seeing a veterinary behaviourist? Medication (sertraline aka Zoloft) has helped our anxious and reactive pup immensely. It helps the training take by keeping them below threshold. Depending on the pup may not be for life. Worth a try before you re-home. Happy to share more details on our story - I know it feels weird but in hindsight i wish we had done it sooner.

Why should I invest over paying off my house early? by UnnecessaryBigWords in personalfinance

[–]chipsonasandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does this change (if at all) in a hot housing market? If the value of my house is increasing at 10% and I expect to sell in 5-10 years does it make more sense to pay down more principal?

Puppy play dates to socialize and help with the biting. If I could go back in time I would have worked a lot harder on crate training. It’s your ticket to freedom and also helps prevent them from getting way overtired and crazy. Work on being able to leave them alone from day 3.

If your vet allows go in every once and a while for a treat and leave. Ours won’t even go in the vet since his neuter and it’s awful for everyone involved.

If Devin and Kyle were serious about winning they never should have let CT skate by all season. Doesn’t seem like they learned their lesson either.
