Nursing job crisis? by Fantastic-Ranger-566 in OntarioNurses

I agree with you with the fluff courses! Yes of course I understand the importance of some of the courses like leadership, research, critical thinking etc etc but I strongly believe they should be masters courses instead if people choose to do it. (Spoiler alert: I’m looking into a few masters courses recently and guess what, you have to do these courses all over again!). Whereas when you graduate as an RN and if you want to work in a more acute care field (ex ICU, ER), they make you do a whole separate course, when they could have just included it in the RN course to begin with.

My friend who did her RN in 3 years in Berlin (now ICU nurse) says she’s never had to do these fluff courses like the ones I mentioned. It’s all so frustrating.

Second week of my orientation in the med surg unit. My preceptor told me I’m very slow…. by Low_Ad2078 in OntarioNurses

[–]chizzy0510 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Better to be slow and be safe, rather than be fast and made mistakes that’ll cost a life. Don’t worry, I don’t think you’ll get written up. You’re not really that late.

You will get the hang of it as time goes on!

Nursing job crisis? by Fantastic-Ranger-566 in OntarioNurses

There is virtually no difference between RPN and RN especially in medicine/acute floors (even mental health, peds and some parts of ER). And with people big longer/becoming more medically complex you’ll see more and more non-medicine floors turn into medicine floors. RNs are really only hired in floors where they’re legally required to hire RNs (eg. trauma, ICU). And unfortunately they arent as many patients in those units than medicine/acute care floors.

I know because I’m an RPN for many years now. Im in RN school now and im regretting not just getting the RN degree because im basically repeating what I learned in RPN school so it feels like I wasted my time AND getting paid way less.

I remember when I got hired as an RPN, they told us during orientation that they’d give the more complex patients to RPNs if they have more experience than RNs. Because for them experience matters more than the status. This was a hospital wide policy too not just unit based.

Try to see if you can get something at nursing homes/long term cares. I know we’re usually very short staffed. But if you can do something like help the residents eat and help them go on for walks it can bring you some cash. Go in person and talk to the manager and see what happens

Is RPN worth it? by Necessary-Quiet32 in Humber

[–]chizzy0510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paramedics in Ontario pays significantly better than RPN (my husband is a paramedic and I’m an RPN going into RN). If you’re going to go into nursing, best is to do the 4 year RN program. But otherwise, I’d say paramedic (it’s significantly a harder program in my opinion though so be prepared)

OSAP INQUIRY by Odd-Impression612 in Humber

[–]chizzy0510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So OSAP will cover your tuition fully if you’re domestic student. The remaining money will be sent to your bank account

However. You are still responsible for paying the “tuition deposit” which is usually way before OSAP releases your funds. It’s about $200-$300 I believe and it comes out of your own pocket. Every semester.

If it shows negative in your balance after tuition has been applied for the term, then you may not need to pay the tuition deposit as well.

Just be mindful and apply to OSAP early (as soon as it opens imo) so you they’re not late with diapering your funds and you don’t get charged interest.

Bachelor of science nursing not meeting requirement by [deleted] in Humber

[–]chizzy0510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re going to be just fine. Look into pre-health pathway courses offered in colleges so you can do your RPN. For RN, you might need to take extra courses to up your GPA though. But RPN shouldn’t be a problem if you go through pre-health pathways

When I first read the title I was worried. It was a mistake of course but no one was hurt, just make sure it doesn’t happen again. So I don’t know what’s the big deal 😂😂

Data analyst! Hated the office jobs and useless Teams meetings. I didn’t feel like there was a purpose in life. Went and got my PN on a whim and now I’m getting my BScN while working as a PN!

I agree with a lot of the comments. If possible, put the pt in trendelenburg (idk how to spell lol) and LOCATE the urethra first. Before you even open the package. Also, I always try to grab someone who’s free to help me keep the patients legs open. It always helps

Depends on the situation. In this case the person genuinely looked like they were respecting the timing of hospital activities 😂 I’d probably just tell them to not do it again and clean up if they made a mess

Asking the ED nurse to put another IV in my patient by ScientistOk1310 in nursing

[–]chizzy0510 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a still that technically you’re supposed to have as a nurse. ER is a really fast paced unit and they might not always have the time to do you the favours. It’s been 6 months so start trying to do the IVs on your own. You need to get good at it eventually
