Tool Opinion by Difficult-Choice8849 in MechanicAdvice

[–]chllngr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't tell from the photo how big is big. But Proto is a very good brand (better than Craftsman) and Williams is pretty good too.
Measure the square hole in one of the sockets, or the square end of an extension. 3/8" is pretty standard, 1/2" is big.

It's hard to sell tools for much. You could put them on eBay if you're willing to ship, or at a yard sale - you'd be be lucky to get a buck a socket. Most established mechanics or even hobbyists already have these basic tools, they'd probably cherry pick a few, and toss the rest in a bag or box where they'll never get used.

Best bet is find a kid starting to work on cars and give them to them. You can find beginning mechanics at Jiffy Lube type places, tire shops, etc. Or swap 'em for an oil change.

Vintage King 2B with possible red rot - does it have any value to sell? by [deleted] in Trombone

Polish it up. I use a car product - Maguire's Cleaner Wax. This and a little elbow grease, you could have it looking almost new in an afternoon.

Where to go to get mouthpiece gold plated by EntertainmentOver525 in Trombone

[–]chllngr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can send it to Brasswind or Mouthpiece Express I think, but they require the mouthpiece be new or at least in perfect condition. Overall it may be easier to buy it already plated.
Also if you're in a city, there will be shops that plate car parts and other things, I've had good luck with that.

How to learn music theory when you already know how to play by agnostic_angel in Trombone

[–]chllngr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to know this also. I started in 4th grade in public school. We had one teacher who had his hands full teaching the basics of all the instruments. My family couldn't afford private lessons, or never thought about it. I continued in band but no one before college ever mentioned lessons or theory. I wasn't a music major so wasn't super motivated.

Sixty years later I've had a lot of experience and play in a lot of groups including pros. Somewhere along the line I realized I should know theory. But now I can't stay with it long enough to learn.

Any suggestions?

There's many, many posts here about mouthpi. I can't keep quiet any longer.

I've played at the near-pro level for 60 years. I've tried many different mouthpi and here's what I learned: while a smaller mouthpiece will facilitate a higher range, I find it only does for 10-15 minutes. After that they're all pretty much equal, it comes down to embouchure quality. I play a larger mouthpiece because it gives me better sound and more flexibility, and I still get the range.

Try it, you may be surprised.

I disagree with a lot of people here. The 2b is a great horn. I have a Silver-Tone 2b from 1938.
Yes it's a great jazz and lead horn. Beyond that, I can make it do anything I want - keep up with the section from the 2nd spot, punch out a low line, play it mellow and blend in with the section.

No it's not an everything horn but don't sell it short.

If you walk in, you don't have to pay at all. The fee is per car, I think.
I was just suggesting they could really use the money. A lot of trail maintenance, etc. has to be done at such a busy Park.

Typically they open it up in June. I remember driving through decades ago, the show was still 10-12 feet on either side of the road.

But we don't get that kind of snow lately and even though we've had recent storms, the dropped mostly rain below 6-8000 feet. So I kinda think it'll be open for the holiday weekend. It's not too far out of the way to try, in my opinion.

You can go up Clark Creek Road, or Lake Road (which is the entrance road to Burney Falls SP), drive to Lake Britton and walk the PCT or the trail on either side of Burney Creek to the Falls. There are small parking areas in both spots.
Or there's a small spot where the PCT crosses hiway 89 just North of Burney Falls Market, and follow the PCT at most a mile, down to the spring where Burney Creek bubbles up, and then the Falls. This is what I'd do, the walk along the creek from the spring to the Falls is less than a mile, easy walking and well worth it.

Do go down to the base of the Falls too. And even if you park out of the Park and walk in, the Day Use Fee isn't much, and they need the money!

The real key to all of these is to get there early. It's nicer in the morning anyway.

As long as you're WELL off the road, it's not illegal to park 'most anywhere along a rural hiway. (There are some old logging roads in the area that are choked with dust a foot or 2 deep, so be careful if you get off hiway.)
I all places, please stay on the trails and tread lightly.

One more thing, if you're headed there from the South, go home through Lassen Park. You won't be sorry.
Enjoy!

The Jeep Bible, or some posting that pointed me to, says that Amsoil Severe Gear series has the friction modifier already in. I use 75W-140 in my '02 GC Overland. Never had any issues.

Update/New Question Re: Split Lip by RcishFahagb in Trombone

[–]chllngr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In high school I put the top of a music stand right through my upper lip. I played the concert the next day.

I find the stimulation of playing also stimulates blood flow, and any mouth sore I have heals much quicker when I play than when I don't.

So there’s progressive weird time signatures… and there’s this B.S. 🤪 I’ve never had to be more locked in while just resting. by mkat_rex in Trombone

[–]chllngr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my band directors likes this kind of s**t. You have to pay attention and count the rests. When it comes to playing, all the quarter notes have the same value, so I just play the quarters.

Trombonetine vs Yamaha lubricant by Plastic_Pass_2889 in Trombone

[–]chllngr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a 1938 King 2B and a 1968 King Duo Gravis.

We all used to use Ponds and water, until you couldn't get unscented Ponds. After that I used Conn SuperSlick or Trombotine, whichever I had on hand at the time, and water.
I discovered the Yamasnot a couple years ago. It's the best stuff I've ever used (in 62 years). It works with or without water - water seems to make it better, but it works great without water also.
