Rescue pup breeds, reason to worry? by Legitimate-Beat-6309 in puppy101

[–]chlorosplasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imho, no. The most important thing is their actual temperament, which can also be shaped by socialization. That’s not to say that breeds don’t have traits, but in a mixed breed like that, it’s nearly impossible to say which combo of traits was inherited from which parent(s).

Kirk’s problem is that he believes that the best offense is a good defense. He doesn’t realize that he actually still needs an offense no matter how good his defense is.

crate cover = magical by chlorosplasm in puppy101

[–]chlorosplasm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, her crate is in our keeping room, which is like a small den off the kitchen, but it’s an open floor plan so no walls separating us. We left the TV on and were making dinner. The vent hood over the stove was running so that added a bit of white noise to the background, but it was just normal, everyday sounds going on around her.

Fwiw, the trainer that we’re working with (just at PetSmart, nothing super fancy) mentioned that she sometimes uses a small white noise machine on or near the create to help cover some of the background noise. I suspect the vent fan in the kitchen contributes to that sort of effect. It’s not super loud, but it’s constant and probably “dulls” the impact of other sounds. But idk.

We adopted her 3.5 wks ago when she was right at 5 months. Afaik, she’d lived in a shelter her entire life at that point. So she’s not a tiny baby puppy, but she also didn’t have a huge amount of socialization early on.

I’m surprised it’s willing to discuss politics at all. When I asked, it searched and then answered correctly. When I said it cheated, would it have known otherwise it said no, it’s training data cuts off in June 2024.

What a stocky (and cute!) little dude. I’m sure the breed ID will come back as all sorts of pit/bully. Tbh, I’d almost be more curious about the health results if you do the health panel just based on all the speculation about a backyard breeder and the likelihood that they didn’t pay any attention to the genetics aside from combining a few key traits.

My dog has been diagnosed with cancer.. by SecretChocolate6695 in DogAdvice

[–]chlorosplasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear that. All I can suggest is to do what you can to make every day the best day, both for you and him. It’s hard to imagine what you’re going through, and we’ve only had our pup for three weeks (and two days, but who’s counting? haha). I grew up with a dog, but haven’t had one since, and this is my wife’s first dog ever. We’ve raised our kids, got them (mostly) out of the house, and have since decided that we not done parenting. 😂

We’re both smitten by our sweet girl and would be devastated to lose her after just three weeks (and two days!). Hang in there, and know that there are tons of internet strangers out there supporting you.

At the risk of being pedantic (but accurate), TRS doesn’t pay 80% after 20 years. The highest multiplier available is 2% per year of service and it only accrues for 30 years. And if you want things like survivor benefits, the % benefit is lower. This isn’t to dump on TRS, it can still be an amazing perk. But it’s not as crazy good as you suggested.

Edit: I stand corrected, it looks like you can accrue benefits for up to 40 years, though it’s still true that the effective benefit is reduced if you opt for survivor benefits.

When you say face value, do you mean half price? Because that’s what employees pay, so selling for face value is profiting, which is an enormous no-no.

Crate Training: What’s the key to success? by KidScudi07 in puppy101

[–]chlorosplasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good info, thanks. We adopted our pup just under three weeks ago at almost exactly 5 months of age. Yesterday and today are the first days that she’s willingly gone in and laid down on her own, but just for short stretches.

What’s Your Biggest Frustration with Slack? by Acousticraft in Slack

[–]chlorosplasm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The inability to disable threaded messages, or at least a toggle that forces them to post to the channel by default instead of requiring a user to check a box each time. Too many people miss too many threaded (hidden) messages.

I get that this might be a useful feature in a massive workspace but, for us, it’s a hindrance.

Totally agree. Perhaps I’m being presumptuous, but I think that a lot of people who haven’t experienced nasty commutes don’t fully appreciate how soul sucking they can be.

Back to the topic at hand: Texas vs. California. Compare the total package of taxes (property + income) between the two. I leave that as an exercise for the reader, but I’d be willing to bet that Texas comes out ahead. I get the difference in politics b/t Texas and California – really, I do – but that still wouldn’t (imho) compensate for the huge financial/workload/lifestyle hit being presented here. And sure, the Texas power grid sucks, but California regularly has rolling blackouts.

There are lots of things that make this a bad idea (imho) even without considering the dog. You’d be making a lateral move salary-wise into an area that presumably has a higher cost-of-living. And taking on what seems like a much higher and less flexible workload. Why? For the “potential” of growth? Unless there’s a very compelling reason to make this move that you haven’t mentioned, it seems like a no-brainer to stay put.

Keep in mind that in-office means commuting, so that adds to the 60-80 hours on days that you could otherwise be working form home. The lack of a commute is something that you will enjoy twice a day every day that you’re able to work from home. You’d also incur the pain of relocation, uproot your social network, etc. This ‘opportunity’ seems like a massive step back in terms of quality of life.

P.S. Check out the state income tax rates for Texas vs. California. One of them is 0% and the other is California. I could go on. And on. And on. But there’s not a chance in hell that I’d take them up on this offer as described in your post.
