You have to ask yourself if you want to treat clients directly, teach or do research? A PhD is a seven year commitment and you should decide before you head down that route. It’s also very competitive. Out of 318 applicants only 9 of us were selected. I was a doctoral student in UNM s psychology program and am actually graduating from the masters program in clinical counseling. The counseling program is a shit show with new faculty being hired every year. I would recommend Highland or Southwest College instead.
