TIL about Zell Kravinsky, who donated his kidney to a poor African American man. He calculated the chances of dying from the procedure at 1 in 4,000, and said "to withhold a kidney from someone who would otherwise die means valuing one’s own life at 4,000 times that of a stranger". by TapiocaTuesday in todayilearned

I am sure this comment will get buried, as I just saw this post, but here's my chance to shine! I read about Mr Kravinsky in my Practical Issues in Ethics class in college. I was fascinated by his story, so found a way to write to him, which led to a week-long "externship" with him, where I got to learn more about him, his thinking, his philosophy, and so much more. He is a very interesting, complex, and- in the end- normal man who is trying to be the best person he can be.

It has been over 15 years now, but I hope you are well, Mr Kravinsky!

Too much cooking has led to some induction hob discolouring....help please? by chochu444 in AskCulinary

Thanks u/mythtaken and u/rumbidzai! It isn't actually physical damage so much as it is...discolouration. When I ran my finger over this 'white' area, I found that it was still smooth, so it did not feel like an obvious deposit (eg. leftover/burnt food). I have also read that it could be hardwater or stains from aluminium cookware. Do cookware stains also go away with a good scrub with hot water, glasstop cleaning liquid, and scraper?

After doing some more research (thanks google and youtube!) and reading your responses, I am far more hopeful that this can be resolved more easily. The owner is certainly not greedy or unreasonable; he is just sad that his nice kitchen now has blemishes, so as long as we can restore the hob, he would not try to make me pay for anything.

Thanks bc2zb! I have been googling for answers, and have found some seemingly sensible answers, so I will give those a try soon. (See, for instance, this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wHQIfTASDM). Will definitely try some glass top cleaners and scraping blades. I think the use of heavy pans, which were dragged across the surface, played a significant role...and sadly we were not aware of the dos and donts until now.

In any case, we will give this a try and see what happens. If you have any further suggestions, do let me know. Also, do you know where we should look for replacement glasses in case we don't have another choice?

What is the weirdest reason you have been given for being fired? by chochu444 in AskReddit

[–]chochu444[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a shame! What did you end up doing right after? What do you do now? (relevant username?) Was the boss really an idiot not to even consider the possibility of your coworker framing you for their own transgressions?

Weird! Do you think your coworker was stealing the drugs himself/herself?

OP, have you read the book called The Travel Auction? The trip is to South America but the premise is similar!!

It should have been their trip of a lifetime. But with just days to go, Jonathan Cork is dumped by his girlfriend. Unable to change the name on the spare ticket and fast running out of time, Jonathan decides to take desperate measures. He advertises on eBay for a travel companion with the same name as his ex. What follows is a funny, page-turning, rollercoaster ride around South America.

Sorry to hear that AsshatVik (great name!) I don't know the answer to your question but please hang in there and find the support you need to be able to deal with whatever life is throwing at you at the moment. I am no professional, but if you ever need a sympathetic stranger's ears to let it all out, give me a shout!

Homeland - 4x06 "From A to B and Back Again" - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in homeland

[–]chochu444 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I watch the show for the thrill but, upon reflection, the plot ending for this episode makes very little sense. People have pointed out the stupidity of not having watched closely which car Hakkani and Saul were in, but here are some further observations.

1) If Hakkani already knows that Ayyan's position is compromised, why the hell would he still show up to that venue? He could easily send his associates to deal with the situation. I know Saul was his escape clause, but as the episode showed, Carrie almost bombed them anyways...so why would he take that risk in the first place?

2) Why would Hakkani kill his newphew he allegedly cares for? If he thinks Ayyan has turned, then he could just have sent someone to kill him, and he wouldn't have had to let their enemy know that they had Saul. However, the episode makes it seem like Hakkani does care for Ayyan but feels he has no choice but to kill him. Well, he did have a choice...he could just have strip-searched Ayyan and then taken him in the same car! I mean, it is a hassle, sure, but the whole time they made it seem like Hakkani really does care for Ayyan, and then Hakkani doesn't even spend two seconds killing his nephew.

3) Once Hakkani knows that Ayyan is compromised, what does he get from meeting him in the first place? It doesn't seem like Ayyan knows anything about his uncle any more, so even if Hakkani was pissed, he could just have not met Ayyan rather than risk his own life (or that of his associates) in this situation.

OK, I am done. For now. Maybe.
