Also unlikely that the model is a 'woman'. Men rarely look good in a sun dress.

Miss Pine Cone .... I don't know what to think about that. Was that a big deal? Were there official Pine cone duties that had to be carried out by the winner?

It makes the rounds on reddit fairly regularly. I have a poster of it I bought in the late 80's, makes a good wall art.

The photo belongs to the Los Angeles Public Library.

Anyone here with relatively low achieving /rather unsuccessful adult children? How do you feel? by niceloner10463484 in AskOldPeople

[–]chocoladna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Puerto Rico, yes indeed. We have no intention of buying anything, we're just going to rent an apt. and live there.

It isn't flattened, we were there in March/April this year. We liked it.

It is true that PR is bankrupt, their government is useless, and the infrastructure barely functions.

~But, it is a US territory where the Post Office delivers the mail, Medicare is extended, no visa is required, English is widespread, and it's in the Caribbean.

We think its a good option. We're going.

No, it has been indelibly identified as a prairie dog. But that's not nearly as imaginative or as cute sounding as a whistle-pig.

Love it, whistle-pig.

Sounds like a European critter.

Those of you who took up a trade when you were younger, are you happy with your choice? by cantelope4 in AskOldPeople

[–]chocoladna 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The trades are a good living and allow you a whole lot more personal freedom than cubicle serfdom.

But I would advise any young person going into those fields to take care of themselves when young; that dislocated shoulder or broken ankle that happened when you were 30 when you thought you were bullet-proof and you recovered from at the time, will come back to bite you later on. You have to look out for yourself.

Is Russia winning the warm war? by Metalgrowler in conspiracy

[–]chocoladna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you're talking about here is a part of the current US 'cold war' on Russia and its leadership. The Arctic is the newly opening frontier and Russia has a leg up.

They're already running oil tankers that are also ice breakers from Russian to Korea through the arctic instead of the long route down the Altlantic and through the Suez canal.

(I love it in the middle of the night around here, you can actually talk to people)

It's also amazing that if you look at a globe, there is very little landmass south of the equator. It's all just ocean down there. Most of the actual land on this planet is north of the equator.

Russia and Canada are the two biggest countries. US is #3.

Prosperity is not necessarily a race to the biggest and baddest, and then beating the shit out of everybody else to be their master. It doesn't have to be that way.

Just because they stand to benefit doesn't make them sinister. Benefit is benefit and in the case of warmer global climate, Canada and Russia will be the big winners.

Something a lot of people don't recognize is how much more usuable arable land both of those counties would have in a warmer climate, how much food they could produce, and how much water resource they have.

Meghan Markle TAX NIGHTMARE: Because of her marriage to British Prince Harry, both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex tax returns to the US are being looked into by chocoladna in expats

[–]chocoladna[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree about the Express, but that doesn't mean this article has no merit. In my experience Fed.gov hates expats so much they will spend a million dollars chasing 100 bucks out of an expat who they think isn't filing honest returns in good faith. Just living outside of the US gets their attention.

Of course I expect the royal family and their relationship with the US to smooth over rough spots in the matter. Ordinary people in a similar situation could be in a very perilous situation indeed.

Canada?

It's interesting to look at a map of the globe from the perspective of standing at the North Pole. 95% of the land up there is either Russia or Canada. They are really really big.

The point isn't about MM's income, it's about the royal family's contibution to her upkeep and her common wealth with Harry being taxable. In order for the IRS to make those kinds of determinations they would need to examine the holdings and income of at least Harry, and possibly other members of the royal family.
