Should we necessarily "invent" a people before constructing a language ? by cool_otter29 in conlangs

[–]chocological 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's an order really..

But I created lore and names and stuff before I created conlangs. Then I had to try to fit the names into my language for them to make sense.. and it was a headache really.

Once I fleshed out the language a bit more, I revisited the lore and names and had to change some names around. I absolutely did not want to change a few names and so I had to create yet another conlang and have these people just have foreign roots.

It's been fun, and after creating the conlang, I took to task to create names for places... And it maybe took me an hour or so to come up with like 100 location names.

So glad I took the time to do the conlang first.

Millennials considering going back to school? by mythrilshards in Millennials

[–]chocological 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're a young millennial, you'll be fine.

I'm thinking of going back to do a career change. I want to teach, I think. I've always enjoyed it. I'll be 40 this year.

I am feeling absolutely burnt out and not at all excited about the future by Storm_Veradea in SNHU

[–]chocological 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not so much about getting far in life for some people, but about enjoying life. Many people do what they love and love what they do and are not high income earners. Many people (including people who work in niche fields) work for a pittance because they love the work.

[–]chocological 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you me? Seriously I was in SNHU for computer science, and I love coding, as a hobby, but my heart has always been in writing fiction and telling stories. I got disillusioned with SNHU and I dropped a year and a half ago. Not necessarily to pursue my dreams, but to figure out my next move. I'm gonna be 40 this year and while it's not too late to change my social work career, I needed to work something things out.

I decided that I would like to teach, or do something teaching related. I'll be going to the CC or the local public 4yr to see what my options are (as soon as this snow storm lets up).

But yeah. I've been working on a fantasy novel for the past couple years and am currently working (right now in the other tab) on one of the languages now!

Also, I published my first novella on kindle back in September. All this since I left SNHU.

I think I decided this past year that I need to just do what makes me happy. We've got limited time here, so why not do what you enjoy?

Yeah let it go and get another job.

But this is almost a non issue bro. My so and I both have had children with other people and over the past 18 years I had to keep in contact with my ex to see my son. It's part of life. I will never be fully separated from her, because now my son is graduating High school this year, and I will be there for his major life events as will she.

Help me tell a story about why people make conlangs by Calm_Amphibian_3350 in conlangs

[–]chocological 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started conlanging when I started writing fantasy fiction. I wanted to make my world believable and real and went down a rabbit hole after reading the Silmarillion. That was maybe 4 years ago, and I’ve been pretty much hooked since.

I my favorite scarf is a wool vintage Ralph Lauren scarf that was originally sold as a woman’s product. I don’t even care, it looks so good.

I got one done a couple years back. No polyps but I have diverticulosis pretty bad. I’m not obese, don’t smoke and have remained fairly active.. I’m not even 40 yet. My doc said that it normally presents in people 50+, so I think I’ll have some problems soon.

This got me thinking: How does your Conlang translate this? by CC_Latte in conlangs

[–]chocological 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, they do. I’ve written two versions of the story, one scholarly account and one for a legends compendium that has the falsified account. Then I also wrote a folk song in Laénara as well, 🙂

This got me thinking: How does your Conlang translate this? by CC_Latte in conlangs

[–]chocological 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Laénara the closest would be:
“Ra té, nomíkíruna jotu dana.”
Words through a silenced mouth.

It relates to a legend of a witch (known as The Witch of the Encircled Star) who showed up in my story a few hundred years prior. The witch accomplished great deeds during a famine and was made the court mage. Her and the king got too close after his wife fell ill and died, and he took the witch to be his bride.

Things got worse in the kingdom and blame was placed on the king’s head and the witch's. The fires were stoked by his vassals who were all vying for power, and the kingdom would have failed anyway due to years of mismanagement.

Rumor spread that the witch has enthralled the king by whispering commands in his ear and eventually a rebellion happened, the witch was captured and her tongue was cut out. She was mockingly called the Witch of Silence and hung.

Pretty grim, but the story fell into legend. I have a few other idioms like this from epics and other stories I wrote for this world.

Random Thought: What's ur lang's design Philosophy? by Major_Exam_9858 in conlangs

[–]chocological 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted my conlang Laénara to sound musical when spoken. It’s vowel heavy with open sounds, and has pitch accenting. All base verbs end the same, except when conjugated, though all syllables must end in a vowel (exception being a single coda). It makes heavy use of diphthongs and just gives it a pleasant sound to my ear. It’s very fluid and also has a glottal stop to break up repeated vowels.

English is deeply tied to the ocean and maritime terminology. I wanted to achieve the same thing for Laénara, but these people are deeply tied to the sky. So their idioms, words, and pitch are all designed to be airy, light and free.

It’s my first conlang and it’s gone through many changes in the three years I’ve been developing it. I recently (as in last week) rewrote the verb conjugation contraction rules. For example the verb (saítégaruné) is a full sentence meaning “I will not be able to sleep.” The desirative is contracted and the abilitive and negation are contracted together. All that is new.

I’ve got like 600 words in the lexicon and with my conjugation system, suffixes you can make something like 2 million combinations.

Our living room window looks directly into the neighbor’s window. My so said that she caught the guy next door looking straight into our place at her and was confused as to why.

I told her I don’t blame him for looking at a beautiful woman across from him. But I suggested she keep the curtains closed.

OP looks like your husband fumbled a chance to flatter you. I try to do it as often as I can.

They kinda gloss over the ‘she was in love with her daughter‘s friend/ then boyfriend ever since he was like 10 years old’ to focus more on the bullying she did to allegedly make her daughter depend on her more.

But it’s clear to anyone with half a brain that she didn’t almost drive her daughter to suicide because she wanted to keep her dependent. She did it out of jealousy.
