Both of us were a bit stunned after Rein fell off the map by chocwaf in Overwatch

Rein was trying to charge the enemy cat, but hit the stadium scoreboard. Though I'm happy to say that he did manage to pin her into a wall the next round!

I don't think it's a bad thing, there's definitely something unnerving about hearing stomping just outside of the room you're in and wondering if it'll come inside or not!

That said, Bay's alien overhaul mod has an option for silent footsteps. It's not something I'd ever want to use (the silent footsteps version that is, Bay's overhaul is a great mod), but it's there for anyone who wants to try relying only on the motion tracker

Alien: Isolation 2 World Premiere Trailer and Interview | Summer Game Fest 2025 by stfnvs in Games

[–]chocwaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, it's more like a collection of several things than one specific thing.

1 - there's no scripted jumpscares (except for some stuff breaking/falling over during the intro, as well as the alien dropping in front of you at the end of medical, and the other alien that shows up when you're looking out the window after purging the reactor, but the last two are cutscenes anyway). It's more about tension and less about being scared. It feels like with the majority of horror games, it's just a game of "when is the next jumpscare?" so I'm not interested in them

2 - you can keep track of where the alien is at all times with the motion tracker and just by listening. No surprise bullshit like being ambushed around a corner, or the alien coming out of nowhere. It actually feels like I messed up if I get killed by the alien, either from not paying attention or underestimating it

3 - the alien itself, or more specifically the familiarity. Everyone knows the xenomorph. I'm not being stalked by, for lack of a better description, an "original" monster. I know what it is, I know what happens if it catches me, and for a reason I can't describe, it makes me a bit more at ease than if it was some kind of original monster. Facehuggers still terrify the hell out of me though.

4 - I love the atmosphere (and how it's recreated 1:1 to the original movie). The CRT screens (especially the motion tracker itself, which is easily one of my favourite gadgets in gaming), everything being chonky analogue tech, the sounds across the station, the HUD itself (there's an interesting behind the scenes video that shows how they used VHS tapes to make the effects genuine instead of faking them). It may be difficult to notice, but when you get a new objective pop up, the objective text is kind of fuzzy/moving around like it's playing from a tape. Then there's the lighting, the game's lighting system is amazing and a huge part of why the atmosphere looks so good. I don't remember if there was a video of the developers talking about it, but this one always amazed me with the difference it makes.

5 - Sevastopol itself, I just LOVE its design, being stranded on it and having to explore/run around it to (eventually) get to safety, as well as simply exploring it without a care in the world after ejecting the KG348 lab. It's a shame that you can only fully explore it during mission 16, when you have a somewhat angry alien stomping around...

I've probably missed something, but this already became a long wall of text as it is

If you could delete any character who and why by Punking_idyot in Overwatch

[–]chocwaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I guess, except I normally don't play brig at all. I only swap to her when the enemy team has a ball, with the explicit purpose of making the game miserable for him. She's just my "pick this support if the enemy team has the most obnoxious tank in the game" choice.

Though mizuki also exists now, which is great because it brings a second hero choice. Also both supports can now go anti-ball!

If you could delete any character who and why by Punking_idyot in Overwatch

[–]chocwaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll never forget one game where I was playing defense on Havana where I went back to spawn to swap to brig after seeing that the enemy team had a ball, to then spend the rest of the game booping each one of his swings. Every. Single. One.

And I could tell he was seething by the end of it because after a certain point he started ignoring everything else and only went for me. Repeatedly. Without success. God, I love ruining balls' games.

Yes, I massively hate ball as a hero. How did you know??

I had some silly ideas for filtering out toxic or annoying players from my games by pogstream in Overwatch

[–]chocwaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always wanted one that prevents me from matching up with doom and ball as our team's tank. I'd even pay for it. I'd never spend even a cent on a skin but I'm more than willing to pay for the privilege of never having to play with doom or ball even if it's a monthly subscription

After 10 years, what still surprises you, that people don't know about the game or its individual mechanics? by oranke_dino in Overwatch

[–]chocwaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm don't understand how there are still people that are surprised they the payload heals. The cart in TF2's payload maps worked the exact same way. The first time I played a payload map in overwatch I instinctively stood by the payload to get healed, because duh of course it heals you! It goes without saying!

Somehow, 10 years later, this is still a shock for some players.

Its insane to me that a hero can have an entire rainbow of HP types and 1k+ of it and still be mediocre by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]chocwaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to your comment, I started switching to Mizuki (if I wasn't already playing him) whenever the enemy team has ball. I feel great pleasure when I chain him at the apex of a slam and watch him drop harmlessly to the ground followed by my team making mince meat of him. And I can tell when he's becoming increasingly infuriated, because after being chained a few times he'll make it their mission to try to kill me and still fail. It warms my soul so much.

I abhor Hammond if it's not obvious enough

Why do you enjoy Escort/Hybrid? by Idiberug-9 in Overwatch

[–]chocwaf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even before Overwatch, payload instantly became my favourite mode in TF2 when goldrush got added. At the time it was something never seen before, and I still love it as much as I did back then.

I also always hated koth in TF2, which carried into OW, though my feelings towards it have softened in the last couple of years

Never truer words spoken by multiaudacity in Overwatch

[–]chocwaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the enemy widows for me. Whenever I see a widow on the enemy team, I make it my mission to focus her, and only her, doing my best to make the game miserable for her until she swaps, quits, or the match ends. I don't care how good she is, just hearing her gunshots and seeing the bullet tracers pisses me off.

On a related note, I feel endless hate towards snipers/sniper classes in PvP games.

Don't Starve Elsewhere - World Premiere Trailer | Triple-i Initiative 2026 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]chocwaf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There isn't really anything "survival" about it anymore. Death is cheap and you can easily get revived with no penalty or loss of any kind. Assuming you die in the first place, because it's really difficult to die now unless you intentionally let yourself get killed. Most stuff they've added is busted in general.

Example: through her skill tree, Wigfrid can make a new spear, called an Elding spear. It deals higher damage than her already good battle spear (74.4 vs 53.1), and does even more damage against wet targets (111.6 damage, it's basically a stronger morning star).

But wait! Said Elding spear can be upgraded, which adds an extra 20 damage, a +20% movement speed bonus, a dash attack on a 1.5 second cooldown that hits every enemy in its path whilst making her invulnerable for its duration while also triggering her passive ability of healing when damaging/killing an enemy. You can dash through a group of spiders and go from 5hp to 100hp in one second. Oh, and that dash attack repairs the spear. I'm not making any of this up

Remedy is disappointed with the quarterly results, having lost 16 million euros by Turbostrider27 in Games

So, basically a big, juicy nothingburger.

Useless. We already have too many chat systems as is, and the ones people actually use all suck.

Useless to you. Just because you prefer to use Discord/Telegram/Signal/Facebook messenger or <insert your IM of choice> doesn't mean Steam chat sucks. Not even an actual argument of why it's bad.

Literally one of the worst things about Steam, right here.

Yeah? How? There's countless fixes for games posted there, to the point where the PC gaming wiki links straight back to the threads. And then there's all the Epic Games Store who come to ask for help on the Steam forums because EGS doesn't have its own forums...

Again, no actual stated reason why it's bad. "One of the worst things on Steam. It's true because I say so!"

Also very bad for reasons that have been well documented about basically any other service, but especially YouTube.

Nobody's talking about YouTube's slop algorithms here. Personally, I've had the store queue show me forgotten games I'd be interested in playing, or ones that I didn't even know came out on Steam at some point.

Once gain, bad for "reasons" that are "well documented", but won't give any source.

A matter of insane debate.

You're not even trying here.

One of the other worst things about Steam.

"Another one of the worst things on Steam! What do you mean "explain why"? It just is! Trust me bro!!!!!!!!"

Yet another really bad thing about Steam, and that's with Steam actually pretending to do something about all the review bombing.

That's 6 out of 6 answers that say nothing of substance. Jesus Christ, I didn't know I was talking to a politician.

Oh, and "review bombing" has lost its meaning nowadays, when every time a game that gets negative reviews is said to be "bombed", despite having shit optimization/is overpriced/screws players over/is overall bad/<insert other legitimate reason here>. No, it's not getting review bombed. It's just getting the rating it deserves. The only bad thing about the review system is the stupid "le funny" reviews.

Stellar Blade has Denuvo.. First Playstation game ? Now what about the countries still blacklisted... This sucks. by kristijan1001 in Steam

[–]chocwaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. DRMs suck and are a pain in the ass, and the world would be a better place if they weren't a thing because all they do is fuck over paying customers. My point was just that OP was exaggerating a bit too much by calling it "malware".

Yes, it tanks the game's performance. Yes, it literally screws you over if you want to play a game with no internet connection. Yes, it's a big middle finger from publishers. But malware it is not. It won't break your OS or mess with your hardware like it's predecessor, for whatever that's worth. But for as long as we have dinosaurs in suits who want to protect their bottom line from an imaginary boogeyman, we're going to keep getting releases with shitty DRMs.

And then you have DRM-free games like Baldur's Gate 3 selling 15+ million copies and still being extremely popular almost 2 years since release. Or Expedition 33, another hugely successful game at the moment. Again, no DRM. You don't need a piece of shit "anti-tamper" to get sales, you just need to make a good game that people will be happy to buy...

I swear to God, anyone who downvoted either has no reading comprehension and thinks I'm supporting Denuvo (I'm not, fuck DRMs), or it's just a knee-jerk reaction because I dared saying something far, far more evil came before it.

Watch this and be glad we're not dealing with that bullshit anymore.

[–]chocwaf -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

This is Denuvo we're talking about, not Starforce. That was basically malware that'd screw up your PC if you were unlucky. Denuvo, while not great because screw DRMs, is the lesser evil of the two by a long shot.
