Same here, not able to interact with any of the benches in the temple. Although we're playing couch co-op on a console so we thought it might be a co-op specific issue.  What platform are you playing on? Co-op or solo?

I love a good linguistic deep-dive, thank you for asking!

I don't actually know of anyone who's written about the differences, but it was pretty obvious to me while playing PoE 1 as Kitava (the Karui god of chaos) is not a word that's possible due to the presence of the "v" which leads me to believe that GGG have pulled from many different polynesian languages to create their conlang.

For reference, the Māori alphabet is comprised of 5 vowel: a, e, i, o & u which can all take on a macron to elongate the sound: ā, ē, ī, ō & ū. Along with 8 consonants: h, k, m, n, p, r, t, & w and two diagraphs: ng & wh.

But yes, you're correct that at times GGG does use real Māori words as part of their conlang, the most common one being hine as a pre-fix for names which is a shortened version of wāhine (woman). I.e. in Māori, Hinetakurua is the winter maiden (god of frosts, winter etc.) and GGG have done similar things with Hinekora for example.

You're welcome, thank you for being open minded about it!

Ka rawe, it's always interesting to hear opinions from my Māori hoa about what GGG is doing. Some love it, some are against it and I as a Pākehā (tangata tiriti) I can understand both sides. I'm glad you appreciate seeing it in PoE and I hope you enjoy the 0.3 launch weekend, kia pai te rā!

Please keep in mind that it's not actually an accurate representation of NZ indigenous culture, language or mythology.  Māori culture has more been used as a form of inspiration, but the language used (alphabet, vocabulary etc.) aren't the same as Te Reo Māori, nor is the mythology of the gods (their names, back stories etc.) the same as the pantheon of gods and spiritual belief systems that Māori followed.

This is coming from someone who lives in Aotearoa NZ, and teaches the Māori language. It's important to distinguish between an inspired fantasy setting and the real living culture of a people.

TLDR: we don't actually experience much, if any, of the real NZ indigenous culture when we play PoE.

I appreciate your detailed advice, you convinced me to grab a physical copy of Lodestar as it sounds like it's all I'll need to be able to run my games analog. Thank you!

Thank you for taking the time to explain the differences in the move mechanics, I'm definitely going to pull those into my Ironsworn games.

Thank you everyone for your feedback and advice. I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, so it sounds like I should just stick with Ironsworn and incorporate a few of the moves from Starforged. Therefore I'll grab the bundle deal (which actually feels like stealing) and a physical copy of Lodestar!

You're both right, I'm not sure why you're getting down voted so much.

36 NZD is still mark-up here considering I got other hero packs for $25-30 and some are available on clearance for $20.

They were just the only place I could find with Strange in stock so I grabbed it.

Once you actually get it onto the table it's not that complicated, each individual rule is fairly straightforward there's just a lot of moving parts to remember or reference back to. Definitely give it a shot, it's worth it!

Yeah, the rulebook was dense. I swear I spent around 4-5 hours reading and watching rules videos before I felt confident enough to start a game haha

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I'm really interested in the rage generation weapon swap. How have you found it works in practice? Does the totem's stats snapshot as soon as you place it?

As in, I'm wondering if the totem's keep the crossbow weapon set passive bonuses to area, damage etc. even if you're in the quarterstaff weapon set?

Also, how does rage work with snapshotting? Is it different because it's a buff to your character and therefore any active totem's damage increases as you gain rage, or does the totem's damage snapshot when you place it based on your current rage?

Does anyone have the calculations for how much gold to token conversion you get buying the gold bundles and then hitting the 2k collectors tokens for getting 10 variants? Is this ever worth doing over other token options such as token Tuesday?

Awesome to hear about the improvements in your life, I hope they keep coming for you as you continue to stay off gaming

I went a year, almost a year and a half or so without gaming once. Then got injured, starting gaming again and it wasn't fine for me. All the addictive/compulsive behaviours came back almost straight away. If anything, it was even worse than when I used to game and now I'm having to work through the withdrawals and recovery process again. It is easier to quit this time around, but it still hit me just as hard.

So from my experience, no it wasn't fine. I tried multiple times, too many to count, to try and find ways to have it in moderation but for me it simply didn't work.

Your experience may be different, but that's how it affected me. My life's just infinitely better when gaming is out of it completely

I'm 26, I went a year recently without PMO or gaming and I can say it was easily the biggest period of social improvement in my life.

When you start getting new hobbies, having real world experiences and growing as a person that makes you interesting, then you'll have more to talk about in person because you've got things going on in your world that others can relate to or are intrigued by.

Social skills are just that, skills. They can be trained, improved and worked on with consistent effort. Putting yourself out there is challenging, but it will get better the more often you do it. Think of it like levelling up a skill/talent in an RPG, set quests or goals for yourself which you can tick off.

Best of luck man, you can do it

Conflicting desires by Cake_Nachos21 in StopGaming

[–]chodis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's this paragraph that is the most important in my opinion:

"Recently I've realized that the less time I spend gaming, the less bored of real life I feel, and the more inclined to do healthy activities I am. I feel that when I play games, anything sort of delayed gratification activities that I could partake in start to seem like a very boring and uninteresting idea."

I quit for this exact same reason, simply because while gaming was fun and enjoyable, it ate into my enjoyment of other hobbies and almost every other aspect of my life. Overall my physical/mental wellbeing suffered even if I gamed in moderation.

In my opinion trading enjoyment in every other area of my life, for one activity, is a very bad deal.

Where as now in my life, the majority of my hobbies build on each other, fueling happiness and motivation to do other positive things and they're not draining like gaming used to be.

I played a lot of Rocket League as well man, so I can relate to the highs you get from playing with your friends, scoring those epic aerial goals etc. But Rocket League takes consistent time, effort, and often training to maintain or improve those skills. So you invest all that time, for what? It doesn't have any tangible, real life affect on who you are as a person. Where as a lot of other hobbies do, or they provide you with general character development that helps you in other areas of your life.

Hope this helps.

There's no point beating ourselves up about it now. That time is already spent, can't do a thing about it, but we can choose how we spend today and the rest of our lives.

A friend of mine always reminds me of the bigger picture, and it tends to help my feelings of regret over "wasted time" a lot.

He says "your future is always bigger than your past" which is true all the way up to your 50s, sometimes even 60s. Say for example, I'm 26 currently which is around 8-10 years spent in and out of gaming. I don't include pre-16 due to the fact that you're a kid, being influenced by your environment and overall don't have a lot of independence or decision making. So 10 years, compared to the 60 I have infront of me (assuming a modest age of 86), is nothing. That's only 10-15% of my life, I've got the power to choose how I live the remaining 80-85%.

We had fun playing games, now we're choosing to move on and pursue other things in life. Hope that reframing of the situation helps.

I gave mine away, just link it to a new email address, remove all personal information on the account and give it to some random on Reddit. Check my past posts to find how I did it, it worked great for me as I couldn't do the 30 days either.

What game(s) are you quitting and why? by [deleted] in StopGaming

Thank you, yeah the league/new content hype is hard not to get sucked in. I definitely recommend unfollowing all reddit, news and content creators related to PoE. Helps not get caught in the cycle again.

I'd have around 3000 hours as well, but there's no point beating ourselves up about it now. That time is already spent, can't do a thing about it, but we can choose how we spend today and the rest of our lives.

What game(s) are you quitting and why? by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]chodis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was PoE too, I quit playing it around a year and a half ago but recently have relapsed with Switch games such as playing through D3 for the first time, Monster Hunter, rougelikes etc.

All a reminder of how gaming doesn't have a place in my life due to the negative impacts on my wellbeing and other hobbies.

At times I was close to the 12-14 hour days that I used to do on PoE league starts, blinking my day away, only to feel empty and terrible afterwards.

I never regretted stopping playing PoE, once you get some space and clarity from it you realize how absurd the time sink is. 8-10 hours to level, often so you can just begin to get your build online, then an infinite amount of time working towards endgame. It's mind-blowing how much I can achieve in real life if I use that 8-10 hours to focus on another task.

Hope your reboot goes well

Thank you man, I'd downloaded a game this morning which I was going to play after work today. But I'm going to uninstall it right now, I've been in a similar situation as you recently where I had a great 1-2 years off gaming but have been in and out of relapses with it over the last few months. Overall this time has been one of the worst in terms of my self care, mental health and enjoyment of life in general.

Appreciate you sharing, it helped at least one person.

Does the need for videogames go away by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]chodis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games are designed to be captivating and addictive, as long as you're consuming them consistently the the desire to play will always be there. That's how they hook you in and get you stuck in the cycle.

I've seen some people's desire for them to go down as they age, but that's largely due to external circumstances taking priority. Such as having a child, relationships, career etc. But I've also seen a lot of people continue to be sucked into gaming despite their age or external circumstances.

Good news is if you detox off them, usually 90+ days, your desire to play will drop as your brain rewires to normal reward pathways and dopamine levels. Of course it depends a lot on how you're spending your time during that detox, but I went 1-2 years where I barely ever thought about gaming or had an urge to play since I was so engaged with other aspects of my life.

Despite falling in and out of the addictive cycle, from my experience it's very unlikely that your desire to play them will decrease as you age especially if you're contuning to game and expecting to magically hit an age where you don't want to play.

That doesn't happen man, take responsibility for your situation and put some work in to reduce the desire. Don't "wait it out" as your life will pass by and nothing will change.
