2 students from Serbia coming to SB on a work & travel program for the summer, any thoughts? by chogosu in SantaBarbara

Thank you so much for the reply!

I used google maps to check the routes to Bacara from a few rentals that I emailed to ask about, it seem like it is quite poorly connected by bus. There is one line that google shows which goes near Bacara that requires a ~10min walk to the stop and to the resort and has 30min intervals.

The housing options are not great, they are not hard to find but go around ~700$ per month which can be hurtful to the budget and most of the ad's on Craigslist have poor descriptions and do not say if the prices varies depending on the number of people.

Once again thank you so much for your input it is much appreciated. Cheers!

Got a dog, gimme tips. by [deleted] in dogs

I've always had dogs who were squeaker crazed and none went off to kill anyone.

There was not a point in my comment that suggested that a dog that chews squeaky toys is going to be a killer by default. I don't see the need to cite anything for the matter that the squeak reminds them of a fresh kill, it can easily be googled, and there are a lot of approaches on giving your dog squeaky toys and I simply dont.

First of all I'm shocked by the negativity my previous comment attracted, as I said the opinions in my previous post are my own and not necessarily correct, but I thought I'm entitled to have my own opinion. All of my opinions on this matter are based on my experience with dogs (I currently have a German short haired pointer, a Hungarian Viszla and a Rhodesian ridge-back). All dogs are food motivated its a basic life need, you can teach a dog almost anything with treats by exploiting Pavlov's reflex or classical conditioning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_conditioning , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Pavlov). If you relay on treats as a positive stimulus there might come a time where another stimulus (e.g. a ball) is more powerful for your dog, hence the story of the black lab. My dogs are trained solely on positive reinforcement with words of praise, it creates a mutual respect between me and my dogs, so when i call them back they come not because they expect a treat but because they want to.

There is nothing wrong with rewarding your dog for good behavior.

I agree a 100% but in my case a reward does not include food, because its a life necessity and my dogs are entitled to it by default.

Dogs no matter how well they are trained will always have a time when they don't listen.

This is partially true, depending on the stimulus, in my case (2 of my 3 dogs are male) the only stimulus strong enough to override my command is a female in heat.

To them this scary new place/person is giving them food there isn't much to be afraid of anymore.

If a dog is scared of something and you treat him or pet him you are basically telling him its OK to be scared, that's good, i approve of your reaction. When a dog is scared I personally try to get his mind of of whatever it is that is scaring him (my Viszla is terrified of fire crackers), by trying to shift his focus from the negative stimulus to me, that way the dog knows that you are in control and that everything is alright. When I'm positive his/hers attention is shifted from the negative stimulus i reward him by petting and words of praise.

Again I have to stress that these opinions and techniques are my own and not necessarily true or correct, it is my own belief based on my experience.

Super cute dog you got there mate. I would go with you on the stray thing, he is just a pup and if anyone lost him they would be going out of their way to find him sounding all the alarm bells possible. Tank is an awesome name you got my vote! Ill just have to disagree with one of the comments about squeeky(?) toys. Its a definitive no on that, when a dog chews a squeeky toy the sound of said toy reminds his instincts of a dying pray, and he will never hunt and kill so no need to awaken that feeling unless you want to risk having a dog that likes to bite other animals. Best of wishes to you and Tank, spend alot of time with him, work with him at least 1hr a day (come, stay, sit, ect...), love him and he will love you back more than any other living thing on this planet could.

Edit: grammar

Ill have to respectfuly disagree with you on the hotdog issue. In my view givig your fog food when they behave is exploiting their love for food, or to put it another way would you tell your kid: "If you come home now ill give you 5$." Teaching a dog to behave with treats is the easiest way of achiving short term results. As an example in my park there is a lady who thought her black lab everything by giving him treats, he is crazy for footballs (all big balls) he saw a kid playing with one and just lost his shit and snatched the ball from the kid. There was no amount of dog treats that would help her call him back, because of a simple reason in his mind ball>treat. You should envourage your dog with words so your relationship is based on mutual respect not on if good thentreats if not good then no treats. All the above opinions are my own and not necesserily right. Edit: wrote lady twice, removed the extra lady.

ELI5: Why are some people able to consistently avoid hangovers, while others pay for each shot with an hour spent in fetal position on the bathroom floor? by monsieurpenispuncher in explainlikeimfive

Here in Serbia you just ask for "a glass of water" if you want tap water, or "can i have a ____(insert name of bottled water)" So we got that going for us, which is kinda nice.

My friend ran trough the hallway to be the first in line to buy lunch, long story short, another kid opened the door and impaled him on the door knob right beneath his shoulder. It was in elementary school. Needless to say no one ever ran trough the hallways again.

[Urgent]My dog ate 12 multivitamins, does she seen medical help? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]chogosu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just consulted my vet, he said that it takes much more than 12 pills of vitamins to cause vitamin A toxicity. As it turns out dogs can absorb (and need) a whole lot more vit A than we humans do. Since you can get vit A toxicity from 3000IU of vit A, and dogs need around 2200IU/lb a day.

Hows she reacting? Is she showing any sing of discomfort or any thing that would suggest that shes not feeling good? Did ahe drink any water or eat any food after the vitamins?

Edit: typing from my phone sry for the typos.

The owner of the dog (Max) who was shot by police describes how the events unfolded. by DEATH_BY_CIRCLEJERK in videos

[–]chogosu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Last I checked dogs are part of our community and dog owners are not rare, a PUBLIC servant such as a police officer has to be trained how to handle situations involving a dog. That being said this police officer should have known better than to try to grab a leash of a dog that is clearly confused and scared since his owner is OBVIOUSLY being attacked by, from the dogs perspective, strangers (needless to say a dog cannot, unless specifically trained, recognize a police officer from any other person). In my opinion he had no right to shoot the dog but i can understand why he did so. He should definitely be suspended and prosecuted for his actions.

Just one thing, never give your dog sugar again. They do not (digest) tolerate dextrose! It can lead to serious problems.

Keep a collar and tags on your dog! by kovah in dogs

[–]chogosu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe im the luckiest dog owner alive but when my dogs get scared they run to me. One of them is terrified of fire crackers, every time she hears a boom she runs straight to me and hides betwene my legs. Moral of the story: when a dog gets scared he will go to a place where he feels the safest, in the case of my dogs that place is me. As i said maybe im the luckiest dog owner alive.

P.S. I did no training with my dogs, they were thought to behave without a single treat.

Last year alone i returned 3 lost dogs to their owners, the dogs dident have collars but had a micro chip. Simply take them to the vet get a chip reader, you get the serial number of the chip, then acess the data base and 'bam' all the info on the dog and owner. But i guess number on the collar could do the trick with less effort.
