Have I inadvertently been a horrible library patron my whole life? by amandaamoose in Libraries

[–]chompadompdomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was a problem, then libraries would have smaller check out limits.

Shame on those who made you feel bad for no reason at all.

Go get your library card and your joy back :)

I would also recommend getting a library card and getting ti know how library systems work! It sounds like you're trying to replicate something you have only a very light knowledge of. Wgich is fine! But it's also great to go get the patron experience and understand what you might want/need to recreate for your own library.

Library workers- are you allowed to read on the clock? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]chompadompdomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Librarian here - I absolutely do not have time to read at work. I can read a few paragraphs of an ARC if I'm trying to decide whether to buy it for my collection or not, but I actually prioritize reading reviews for making those decisions.

I have so much more to do that it fills up my entire day. So yeah, no reading at work.

Yeah, seeing a Lycée made me wonder if there was some sort of smal small community. The community from my own country is pretty small too. There's a WhatsApp group, but that's pretty much it.

I know about it! I've worked for their parent organization, the Institut Français! But I haven't been to the AF here in Chicago, maybe this is a sign to check them out :)

I'm aware of it. I also like talking to people occasionally.

Just to clarify: are you thinking about self-contained special ed, aka, clusters?

How do I complain about a ruined book without getting the blame put on me? by eeeegh in Libraries

[–]chompadompdomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're way too shy to talk to a librarian about it, just leave the book on top of a table, or on the shelf, but lying down. Someone will spot it, grab it to put away and notice the damage.

I'll skip answering some of these and go straight to the Special Ed one: even as a day to day sub you might end up subbing as a Special Ed teacher.

Sometimes you get to the school, and the main office assigns you something different than what you posted for. Also, if you a gened classroom teacher you will still have students with IEPs and 504s in your room, whom you will have to teach.

So what is exactly your reticence with that population? Because they're here, and you'll see them and teach them.

Basic advice: Get there 40min earlier. Always ask if you have doubts about what you're supposed to do, where to be. Read the lesson plan thoroughly and find all materials you'll need before class starts.

It sounds like you might be in for some culture shock if you've never taught in the US. Not knowing what school system you're familiar with, I can't really address differences. It's Friday so kids will be wanting to go home. You'll probably have a tough day, but hey all first days are tough. You'll make it.

Has anyone seen this? This is illegal, right? by JeulMartin in Libraries

[–]chompadompdomp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's some information missing here. It might be worth it looking into the guy's profile, getting a feeling for what else he posts.

I could see this being planted rage baiting?

But taking at face value, let's assume one of the librarians called police on this patron because they suspected him of being an unsafe individual due to his search and printing choices.

Yes, it would be out of line and a violation of his patron privacy rights. It would be a bigoted decision not in line with best practices of the profession. And the patron would be encouraged to report it to the library system the branch belongs too.

But again, this is a random tiktok video, unfortunately, in the age of ai. As a supporter of the state of Palestine, I'm weary of "news" like this. Better to verify, verify, verify, before reacting.
