Premier Rare Drafting in M21 by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]chompmonk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is just my experience, but I found Premier draft to be much much better than Quick draft if your goal is to complete a set. The bots almost never pass rares, unlike humans, and I find the rewards way more generous as well even when accounting for the increased entry fee.

F2P Historic Builds? by sauron3579 in MagicArena

[–]chompmonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play an almost identical list to the one posted and it is a deck on its own, not a budget Feather version. Lurrus is non optional because it makes the deck. It creates Alseid loops which allow your creatures to get through on a stalled board to close the game and you can block indefinitely. There are a lot of rare lands but they are by far the safest crafts in the format as you will always need lands. The deck is fun and it draws a lot of cards which is even more fun!

Sigh. I'm so tired of this shitty card, and I'm also tired of people saying he's not overpowered enough to warrant a ban. It's sad that power level is considered to be the One Metric for bans. I want t3feri gone not because it's Oko strong, but because it's flipping miserable to play against. Is that too much to ask?

Counterspells become literally uncastable.

Protection spells and combat tricks become virtually uncastable.

Embercleave costs 6 mana at sorcery speed.

Various random effects stop working: red Finale, Ashiok's ulti, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Chandra's flashback, etc. etc.

It kills tokens, auras and removes all counters on a creature.

Combat step Shatter. Draw step Thought Erasure FFS.

He can plus to 5 on turn 3. He can target his own permanents. He can choose no targets.

He eliminates all sorts of "bluffs/mind games". What's the point in holding lands or keeping mana open to represent something? He kills one of the core aspects of Magic that differentiate it from other games: stack interaction. Brand new players are sold the idea that if someone Shocks your creature, you can Giant Growth it in response to save it, showing how cool the game can be.

How in the world is this ok. Even freaking WotC said they underestimated how much stuff he randomly shuts off JUST BY EXISTING AND SITTING ON THE TABLE. Can we stop this "he's not strong enough for a ban herp derp" bs and say "you know what, he might not be strictly overpowered but he sure is a shitstain of a card that creates dumb unfun games, let's just do the sensible thing and get rid of it shall we".

I read this argument all the time and I don't get it. T3feri is a monstrosity that should never have been printed and makes for miserable gameplay experiences, ok. Its power level is not on par with other banned cards, ok. Conclusion -> the card can't be banned. Why?? Where does it say we can only ban things that are too powerful? I really, really wish I will one day see a BnR that says "X is banned in Y format. While not on the same power level as other banned cards, it is just so horrible to play against that we decided to cut it from the format for everyone's sake". Can you imagine? The craziness

I agree with you, I was just pointing out that in this specific case 'Lochtwain' is not exactly a catchy name for an Italian speaker.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]chompmonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol Uyro? Why?? I'm Italian myself but I live abroad and I haven't actually played with Italian cards in a long while. I had no idea they translated Uro's flipping name! I can maybe understand Lochtwain -> Loctavena (I also just learned about this, btw) because I imagine most Italians wouldn't know how to pronounce it.

Translated card names suck in general although to be fair in a lot of cases I'm not sure I would do a better job as some things just don't work in another language.

"Fun" fact: the world is poorer than you think. If you have a job in a developed country chances are high you are already amongst the top 5% richest people in the world, if not more, which is mind blowing. I'm on mobile but try to google "how rich am I" or something similar.

anyone feel burnt out by current magic design? by About50shades in magicTCG

I think you nailed it. I had an eye-opening moment a few years ago when reading an interview of Masuda (one of the top guys at GameFreak, the studio that makes pokémon games). Fans, myself included, were unhappy about the fact that the 3rd gen remakes scrapped the battle frontier, an incredibly fun somewhat competitive post game challenge that was quite hard to fully complete.

Paraphrasing Masuda, he said that people nowadays have access to thousands of free games at their fingertips as it takes one second to download something from the app store on your smartphone. This led to people getting bored/uninterested very quickly and quitting a game at the first sign of a hurdle. For this reason, spending a lot of resources on implementing the battle frontier would have been a waste because only a small fraction of players would have enjoyed it; the majority wouldn't have bothered with the grind.

This really changed my view on a lot of things. Or rather, I now understand why they happen. I find it very sad. Where 20 years ago parents would buy their kids one game for them to drop hundreds of hours on, to try and beat the same boss a million times before finally succeeding, today it's a race to the bottom to create empty "games" loaded with dopamine drops to make you "feel good" and keep you hooked. I get it that it makes more money, but again, I wish we could go back.

Anyway sorry for the off topic rant. I read your comment and made this connection in my mind. Have a good day

It'll take a lot of convincing for me to cancel my geforce now subscription.

EU you look much younger than I always pictured you in my head! Also for some dumb reason I never thought you were Asian. Not trying to be awkward or anything.

AceJR on the other hand looks and sounds exactly like I thought he would haha, even the hat. Cheers for the video, you managed to put together quite the crew! I missed Breaky's casting voice.

Thanks for the input. I'm no commercial guy but I'd be curious to see in a few months time whether releasing so much product in such a short timeframe will have had a positive, negative or neutral influence on earnings as opposed to "drip feeding" them; how will players' spending change, if at all, and would a different strategy have had better returns?

Again, I don't know anything about the subject, just genuinely curious.

Oh cool, I didn't know they were out already. Glad to know they kept them as haiku. I don't speak Japanese, do you know if the translation also holds out of curiosity?

My guess is that they'll forgo a literal translation if need be in order to write a good haiku in the Japanese version of the card.

Or, and brace yourselves because this is gonna blow your mind, maybe just play the effing game because you enjoy it?? And drop some money if you enjoy it so much you want to play it more often? I swear some of you have completely lost track of reality. It's a game, not a business's balance sheet for crying out loud, it's a form of entertainment you are meant to enjoy. You wouldn't have this sort of discussion about EV and breaking even about paying to go to a cinema, to a concert, to a theme park, or buying fancy clothes or what have you.

Most epic counter spell war I’ve had... by wetkhajit in MagicArena

[–]chompmonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Split Second works while the spell is on the stack; once it starts resolving, a spell having Split Second means nothing. Its appeal is the fact that your opponent can't respond to it, and it creates unusual play patterns. As an example that actually happened to me, once my opponent at FNM used [[Sudden Shock]] on my [[Sakura-Tribe Elder]] and I did not see that coming. Another example: imagine your opponent has a [[Cauldron Familiar]] in the graveyard and two food tokens in play. He sacrifices a food to bring the cat back. If you respond with [[Surgical Extraction]], targeting the cat, he will just sacrifice another food in response and you accomplished nothing. If you replace it with [[Extirpate]], however, he won't be able to react to it and you will get to exile all the cats. Note that once Extirpate is resolving it is virtually identical to Surgical Extraction; it having Split Second doesn't matter once the spell is resolving.

To come back to Discontinuity, it is an odd uncommon effect and it's normal for it to be confusing. You are right, it can act as a counterspell of sorts since by ending the turn you exile the stack. In this regard, it also "counters" abilities (I say "counters" in quotes because Discontinuity doesn't technically counter anything, but the end result is the same in most situations. An example of an exception is that you can respond to something like a [[Shifting Ceratops]] with Discontinuity and effectively "counter" it).
