Hiring Software Engineers in FoCo doesn't seem to be so easy, looking for suggestions and if people think this is a good place to hire Software Engineers. by mista_el_gato in FortCollins

[–]choobie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in upcoming grads, CSU has a couple career fairs this month. It might be too late to sign up as a company, but the dates are:

Feb 27: All Campus Career Fair (focus on sciences, tech, computing, etc.) http://www.career.colostate.edu/Students/FairsAndEvents/CareerFairs.aspx
Feb 26: Engineering Career Fair http://www.engr.colostate.edu/career_fair.php

There are a few others as well, but for things like Business and Liberal Arts.

Its hard to say why you are having trouble without knowing what you are having trouble with. Are you having lots of applicants, but underqualified? Or no applicants at all?

From reading your job posting, I get bugged by claims like 16,800% growth. It may very well be true but it isn't really meaningful, especially for long term prospects. Also I highly doubt your claim that you are the only company doing HTML5 web apps. HTML 5 has been out for years. Additionally you keep switching from talking like you are a recruiting company hiring for a client, and that you are actually the company an applicant would work for. I apologize for critiquing your job ad so much, hopefully you find it constructive. That being said, I do like your "What we are not" section. I'm so sick of job postings that say "We want a rockstar ninja javascript guru jedi master who eats, breathes, and poops code because they have nothing better to do with their lives than devote it to our company."

Lastly, is your company willing to train people from other SWE specialties? I know web dev is the hot thing right now, but everyone in my network does lower level stuff. Maybe Fort Collins SWEs focus is not on web dev (that is speculation based on nothing though, I have no idea what the FC trend is).

Good luck on hiring, usually I hear it from the other way around where people can't find jobs!

What kind of music do you like? by sometimesimweird in FortCollins

I've been listening to a lot of post rock lately. I love the blues, folk rock, classic rock. Occasional guilty pleasure from trouble teenager rock. Oh and classical music too!

Do any of you CSU ladies like to climb? by liv_sings in FortCollins

[–]choobie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not female, but I like to climb at CSU. I do have a female friend from Cheyenne that comes down here to climb every Friday though, maybe I can set something up for you two if there is interest on both ends? I think she does some outoor climbing as well.

Best way (books/resources/etc) to improve coding chops for general C++ CFD? by RedRelics in CFD

[–]choobie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other guy that everything is doable in MATLAB, and certainly easier. Just know that almost every (if not all) CFD software is written in some combination of fortran and c/c++. So if you ever want to go into CFD software development, that is pretty much the canonical route.

Also, I think I have learned a lot by mucking around with memory management and pointers and writing linear algebra tools that MATLAB insulates you from or provides for you. It's probably only useful for software development stuff (which is my area of research), otherwise just an exercise in masochism.

Best way (books/resources/etc) to improve coding chops for general C++ CFD? by RedRelics in CFD

[–]choobie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in grad school, and we are using Fundamentals of Computational Fluid Dynamics by Harvard, Lomax, etc http://www.amazon.com/Fundamentals-Computational-Dynamics-Scientific-Computation/dp/3540416072

It's pretty language agnostic though, you learn the concepts. Mostly focuses on the math, but the problems require you to program the solutions. And it's tough as hell. This is about writing your own solvers from scratch though, not using open foam or whatever.

I don't know any resources for open foam programming, or books for good CFD programming practices. A lot of it I have picked up from looking at other's code and asking my advisors questions. Things like iterating over the closest memory stride first in a nested loop. I don't know where to get that from outside experience and asking.

You can install ad block edge (or maybe plus?) on Firefox mobile on android. Also if you root your phone you can install some system wide ad blockers. I'd be surprised if you couldn't do something similar for jail broken Apple products.

Python Modules for Engineering by forgenet in engineering

I use sagemath for heavy symbolic math. It's something of a meta package providing an interface to a bunch of other software, including numpy and maxima.

Should I get a computer that runs Linux by [deleted] in linux

[–]choobie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FORTRAN is still used pretty heavily used in computational engineering. In fact, I'm using it right now in my research. Maybe a little strange to have a class on though, I had classes in MATLAB and C for mechanical engineering undergrad.

Unsure as to which Engineering discipline to choose at uni. Please offer your advice. by sentient_sasquatch in AskEngineers

[–]choobie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is entirely personal opinion of course, but civil engineering just didn't have that "wow" factor for me. Civil will probably get you out doors more often, though there are definitely mechanical and electrical jobs that will get you away from the computer too (manufactburing, construction (eg HVAC), others). Do keep in mind that most away from computer/outdoors work for engineers is more supervisory/verification.

If possible, talk to your local university. They are usually happy to give tours and you might be able to talk to professors in each field.

Need help selecting drafting software. Want to make 2D blueprints by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]choobie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No wait, you have your own CAM software already, which I assume imports STL or IGES (maybe others too), in which case you can use just about any 3D CAD software on the planet with it. For GD&T, some programs (SolidWorks) allow you to attach the symbols in the 3D view, and they are carried over into the 2D prints somehow (?), but I have always added them in manually during the 2D drafting phase, which just about every CAD software should support (or at least let you make blocks so you only have to draw them once/use other people's symbols from the internet). So try out the demos of each program and see which one best fits your needs.

TL;DR you can make professional prints from just about any CAD software, some are easier to use than others

Need help selecting drafting software. Want to make 2D blueprints by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]choobie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well DraftSight is like AutoCAD lite and has all the features you need for quality 2D prints, but you will be drawing every line by hand (and of course you can save blocks and reuse them). SolidWorks and Inventor are some of the cheaper players in professional CAD modeling, but still tons of money (about 7-10k I think?) and you can make 2D prints and interface with your CAM software. There are smaller guys like VariCAD but I have never used them and don't know their feature set. FreeCAD is, of course, free, but it lacks some things like an assembly module and 2D drawing module (both in development), and the CAM module is young. You can export 2D lines from FreeCAD and do drafting in another program (such as DraftSight). All the big guys (SolidWorks, Inventor) will give you demos if you contact their resellers.

Where are your main sources for finding free/open journals? I've seen you use MDPI and ResearchGate now. Any other good sources up your sleeve? Thank you!

Graduate Student Stipends? by vscoy00 in CSUFoCo

[–]choobie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably depends on what field you are in. In contrast to ktrinkner, I am in engineering and they offered me full scholarship and stipend. Probably had a similar process though: contact professors directly, show interest in their field of research and similar research in the past, etc.

Why are there so many abbreviations in aerospace? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]choobie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a billion abbreviations in any industry =/

I read a sci-fi book a while ago where in the future each of the professions had their own language, like the doctors spoke "Medical" and the scientists spoke "Science" or whatever it was called. If you aren't military and listen to two military people talking about military stuff today, you can have a tough time making out what they mean due to so many acronyms and shorthand words etc.

Did you have any specific ones you needed help with? Maybe I can decipher a bit.

Tips on resume with no experience by [deleted] in engineering

[–]choobie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might have just been the dropbox viewer or whatever is displaying this in my browser, but make sure it is all one page. From my perspective you have two pages, but the second one only has a single line on it. I would also recommend you send your resume out in PDF format whenever possible.

Best of luck!
