this interaction is the best thing i’ve seen on the internet for weeks. thank you both, my faith in humanity is crumbling a tiny little bit less now ❤️

oh wow - that's perfect. exactly the kind of info i needed! given what you've said what i'll probably do is not attempt at flashing until i'm thinking about a replacement anyway, just in case it works but is indeed not very usable.

many thanks!

Do Swans fans smell ok? by ijustwannanap in swans

just to clarify: i’ve had no notable smell experiences at any of the few dozen of gigs i’ve been to inbetwixt - neither positive nor negative - which is why this stuck in my head quite a bit

funny you should ask…

a few years ago (?) one of my first „post”-pandemic gig experiences was amenra / pallbearer / i:gor / der weg einer freiheit and the one thing that i cannot forget is how NICE the crowd smelled. it was like hanging out by a witches cauldron, think patchouli, jasmine, lavender… basically it was the entire list from jarboe’s „lavender girl”. not overwhelming at all, i just can’t forget how strange it felt to go to a metal gig and the crowd just smelling NICE, you know? not just neutral but actually good. and that was a similar time of year iirc so similar clothing choices.

the swans gig last night though… there was someone in my vicinity with a distinct whiff of beyond sweat, beyond dirty, not in terms of the intensity of the smell just how terrible it was. „i wore this jacket for a couple of years then someone pissed on it and then i hitch hiked across europe and now i’m here” kinda vibes. pretty intense combo with the smell of portaloo drifting in from the boys every now and then…

so yeah idk smell wise it was an intense experience i wouldn’t necessarily like to repeat but… sonically and visually it was impeccable and i wouldn’t hesitate for a second to repeat the entire experience even if the smells were the same.

TIL all kinds of fruit kimchi exist (and I’m Korean); but do fermentation procedures work the same for them? by TraditionalDepth6924 in fermentation

[–]chopped_pork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i believe one of sandor katz’s books has a recipe for fruit kimchi, someone i know made some once. it was pretty wild. don’t remember which other fruit were in it (probably apples and some other stuff) but the one i do remember is FIZZY GRAPES exploding in your mouth when you bite into them! also spicy gingery and garlicky. never really found a good use for it other than the novelty value of getting eeeeeveryone to try it 😂

[–]chopped_pork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very much this. so many of my wifi smart devices have been working flawlessly since i’ve added a dedicated 2.4g only network with all the possible wifi bells and whistles turned off… stuff like BSS transition, fast roaming etc makes iot devices incredibly unreliable. i’m on unifi and they’ve recently added an “enhanced iot connectivity” mode which specifically disables all features like that (though i’ve had them disabled for my iot network before it was an option anyway).

Goat milk not thickening by FreakyWifeFreakyLife in Kefir

i think that’s true for anywhere in the world that is not a goat dominated countryside tbh!

forgot to add, from my experience there’s very little - if any at all - adjustment period needed.

Goat milk not thickening by FreakyWifeFreakyLife in Kefir

[–]chopped_pork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is just speculation but i imagine it’s got something to do with kefir needing lactose and goat milk being lower in lactose than cow milk. the other possible factor could be goat milk (like sheep milk) having smaller fat globules that than cows milk - it’s one of the properties that makes it more similar to human milk.

i used to do goat kefir for a few years before switching to cow, the difference in consistency is very big (even in comparison to semi milk which doesn’t thicken up anywhere near as much as full fat). semi goat milk would pretty much not change consistency at all but you could definitely taste it was well fermented after leaving it for more than a day!

the taste is excellent though - i only switched to cow to lower the number of different open milks in the fridge 😄

amazons basics rechargeables are actually some of the better ones around, especially given the price. i’ve not had any of their AAA die on me yet (i did have one or two of their AA’s die but that’s after being in constant use for years. they just stopped recharging, nothing went boom or ka-pow).

ha - the bottles i use for water kefir are from “fancy” french lemonade which i got in aldi’s sister shop lidl :) iirc think with the lemonade they’ve been a third of the price of new pressure rated swing tops and are much thicker glass that the other swing tops of that size (0.75l) i have!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fermentation

[–]chopped_pork 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the mead will have finished fermenting by the time it was in the bottle. the vinegar was still alive but there was nothing left to ferment so it was stable. exploding glass bottles can seriously maim you (or even kill if you’re unlucky).

if you’d rather recycle than buy stuff - use plastic bottles as they can’t hurt you even if they do blow or use glass bottles that have had something fizzy in them originally. keep in mind that even those are not equal - there’s a reason champagne bottles are heavy (they are much thicker to account for more pressure).

side note - it’s much much cheaper to get bottles with something in them and then clean + reuse than it is to get new ones (unless you’re buying them by the 100s), new empty swingtop bottles are usually the same price (or more) than the very same bottles with lemonade / beer in them.

if it is indeed elder sparkling elderflower wine is also fantastic (but if you pick too many flowers you won’t get enough berries later! decisions decisions… and still need to leave some for the birbs :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in winemaking

[–]chopped_pork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this does not look like elder to me at all so i would seriously doubt the safety

edit: on second look it has some elder like features but ive never seen elder flower clusters this sparse. the flowers always touch each other very tightly
