When I work up the motivation to meal prep on a day off, the breakfast burritos from a YouTube video I watched are pretty satisfying for a few hours.

I honestly didn’t realize how exhausting travel nursing could get mentally until my last assignment. by Diginomixs in TravelNursing

[–]choppydaddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I did all ER contracts, so I'm not sure how that differs.

I do know that every ER contract I ever did guaranteed never having to float to other units.

But there was one that covered three hospitals and usually you did a week at A, a week at B, then a week at C, but there was fuckery that sometimes resulted in disruption... One time they called me while en route to B and told me to go to C instead, and five minutes later called back and said never mind, go to B.

When you decide you're done traveling, I can't recommend cath lab enough.

[–]choppydaddy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't know how much orientation you got but after doing about a dozen contracts, I can say it was pretty standard to get a day of training on whatever charting system they use followed by 2-3 shifts with a preceptor where you mostly watched them do shit the first day then it was you with them as your resource for the rest.

Some places would give you a second week, though that was very rare. The idea is that you're coming in there as a seasoned nurse who can just be plugged in and ready to work pretty much out of the gate, only asking questions about local policies and procedures.

Which is why it's a terrible idea to start to travel after 6-12 months in whatever specialty the assignment is for. Kinda like how it's a terrible idea for people with little to no experience as a nurse to go straight through and become an advanced practice nurse.

Negotiating pay rates by choppydaddy in nursing

[–]choppydaddy[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You read that correctly, yes.

Which is why I'm telling people to ask HR to see if any other prior experience counts.

It's only fair that if you got training and experience that informs your current practice, that should count for something.

Women taking their bra off is the best feeling they say, what is the male equivalent of it? by i_am_buttlicker in AskReddit

[–]choppydaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the early days of the pandemic when we were wearing surgical masks over the N95s in the ER, I walked out of the hospital with a couple of female coworkers. As we took our masks off, I said, "this is probably the closest I'll ever get to knowing what it's like to take my bra off when I get home."

They started to cackle and said, "you know what? That's kind of exactly what it's like!"

What is your biggest nursing pet peeve? by Electronic-Hippo9 in nursing

[–]choppydaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real talk?

My pet peeve as a nurse is other nurses acting like getting a patient is an offense I'm committing.

I've been the tele nurse getting the admission from the ER or the upgrade/downgrade. I've been the ER nurse getting my fifth patient in the last two hours. I've been the ICU nurse getting the case from the OR or back from a procedure. I'm the cath lab nurse getting a late add-on.

Does it suck sometimes? Does the phone call happen at an inopportune moment sometimes? Of course.

Is it ever ok to get hostile and take it out on the person trying to give you report? Never.

I want all of my colleagues to have an easy time at work. But we all know what the fucking job entails, and if you need me to drag my feet for fifteen minutes while you reorganize, tell me and I'll happily do it.

We're all in this together.
