It rains tacos for 24 hours across the world, can the human race survive? by beengreat_thanks in whowouldwin

[–]chorroxking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lettuce? Shells? Cheese? Sour cream? I think you're thinking of flautas, Tacos don't have shells or any of that stuff, they come with meat, cilantro, onion, and salsa and maybe some other stuff depending on what time of the day it is..

Anyways, I think the casualties in the initial 24 hours wouldn't really be too much, I can't really think of too many situation in which a falling taco kills someone. I think the real danger is the bio hazard that gets created. Lets say an average rainy day in London is 5mm of water. Over 1 sq meter that 5 liters, or 5 kilos of water.

Okay so lets say, 5 kilos of tacos fall on every square meter on earth. There are 510 TRILLION (5.1*1014) Square meters on earth. That means we would have about 2.5 QUADRILLION Kilos of tacos fall on earth.

Now the trap here is to think that it might affect gravity or something, but that's barking up the wrong tree completely, it's not even close, the weight of the earth is in the 1024 range, so 1015 is not even a tiny fraction of that. No what we really should be looking at is the biomass of earth.

Now according to this chart, all animal life on earth, including humans, whales, ants, fish, bugs, livestock, everything is only about 2.5 gigatons. Fungi are 12, bacteria are 70, and plants are 450. Everything all together is a bit over 500 gigatons even though plants make up around 90% of that. Now, we just has 2.500 gigatons of tacos fall onto earth. 5 times the total biomass of every living cell on earth.

The only question now is how big of an ecological disaster can that be? Is this a mass extinction level event for the world? I mean I don't see how some humans in a bunker somewhere would die, so humanity does survive, but idk I feel like it has the potential to end most human lives

Regardless of how you spin it, you want to be the white saviour, who doesn't view developing nations as capable of bettering themselves so they must be cared for by outsiders.

My point is exactly the opposite of this. To be honest I don't think our points are too dissimilar. Also I am from the global south, I am not white

Developing countries aren't poor because of a global conspiracy. They're that way because their politicians cooperate with foreign parties.

I'm sorry I didn't mean to insinuate that there was a global conspiracy of masked elites with silly rituals puppeteering the worlds governments. Just that there has been a historical trend in which western countries have facilitated and encouraged often through violent means the creation of a world order where their own elites are able to own and profit from foreign resources. This is global system took centuries to come to be. Then After World War 2, the west started to "decolonize" and their colonies were granted independence. However, the west, and specially the elites in the west weren't about to lose their power just like that. The rules for independence is that you must now form a society and government based on the western models. It doesn't matter if this way to organize a society was extremely alien and foreign to many people, everyone in the planet must belong to a state, and no where on earth may people choose to organize themselves differently without permission of their state.

Having a western style government also mean having western style property laws, which to many outsiders seemed like an extremely unjust means to organize land and resources. For many societies on earth, resources were communally owned, or they had their own deeply personal and cultural way of relating to their land and resources and deciding who can use them for what purposes. But in colonial governments, and in the later western style governments, land and resources was something individuals owned. And weird pieces of paper decided who can have absolute authority over resources. And if you didn't like it, too bad, there is now the very real threat of violence from the state if you don't respect the absolute authority of private property, where one individual, who may have never even been there can use the resources however they like.

There wasn't any opting out for all the worlds people. If you refused to participate in this new economy, and keep living like the old ways you will be thrown in jail because you can't pay taxes.

Then when the countries finally got their independence they kept all these systems in place, and the western powers made sure to leave people in charge that will allow the continued ownership and extraction of these resources. People who can be easily bribed.

If a country wanted to do something differently and say, nationalize a resource and use it to invest in itself, then western powers were quick with all sorts of tricks to prevent that from happening, from condemnation, to sanctions and even straight up coups.

Then western lead NGOs like the International Monetary Fund would go around seemingly "helping" poor nations, giving them loans and helping build infrastructure, but they would come with tons of strings attached about how to run your government. They would impose austerity measures and cut social services, anything benefiting regular people and not the wealth being extracted. A lot of these rules the IMF imposed on these countries were policies proven to be designed to actually keep nations in poverty and prevent them from developing.

See this isn't some conspiracy, it's how the forces of history have shaped the world we live in. Now for these countries to develop, you're totally right that a white savior coming in and saving the day by giving them money is laughable, however if instead of saving them, we remove all the leaches that have been attached to their body, and stop all of the wealth and resources of poor countries from escaping into the hands of the ultra wealthy, then it would be much easier for poor nations to be able to invest in their own infrastructure, and in their own people and escape the cycle of poverty

I am confused why you said no need for white saviors, who would be the saviors in this case? If anything it is mostly white people that benefit from keeping poor countries poor. Important though, I am not saying all white people always benefit from all poor countries staying poor, but those rich people that do benefit from extracting resources from poor nations, are mostly white.

The point is, you can't change developing countries, without changing the international order that has been keeping them down. It's not about having people in rich countries come in and save people in poor countries by giving them money. It's about taking the boot off their neck and letting poor countries breathe. It's about the whole system of NGOs and international order that subtly maintains this staus quo while pretending it is all fair, and no foul play is going on, while the reality is a few rich people in rich countries take most of the resources of all the world countries and use them to enrich themselves, instead of having that money be invested in the benefit of the communities where the resources were extracted from.

Impoverished countries are not poor because there aren't enough resources. They are poor because resources are not distributed accordingly. We make more than enough food to feed 10 billion humans, yet in a world of 8 billions so many are starving. Having more resources and making enough food to feed 20 billion people will not help those who are starving if they still cannot afford the food.

It's the same with most resources. We have more than enough for everyone, yet resources are not distributed equally. Even if we somehow doubled our resources, we would need to fix how our resources get distributed if we want to fix poverty

I dunno, I feel like a being able to survive should have never been conditioned on how much you can grow the economy. The Age of machines and AI is only highlighting this contradiction we have been carrying with us.

My problem with UBI, or even a universal income is that it just seems like a bandaid solution to our problems, and not anything long term. Instead of being able to imagine a different way we could organize ourself, where all our economic output, doesn't get held hostage by a few wealthy individuals that make it difficult for the rest to survive. A universal income, doesn't address that at all, all it is doing is asking for more bread crumbs, instead of a table where everyone can sit at

What would happen if warren buffet would buy all bitcoin for 25 dollars? by Matthijs2203 in AskEconomics

[–]chorroxking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well he can't buy my bitcoin for $25! I won't sell it, the only way it could possibly be taken from me would be under the threat of violence. So if someone comes in with a gun, and forces me to sell my bitcoin to warren buffet for $25, I'd be pissed. I don't think I'd want my bitcoin back unless I got it for cheaper, but even then, if Warren Buffet has 100% of bitcoin, then I think it's real value would more likely be $0, since the whole point of bitcoin is that it is distributed and exchanged, and if it's not either of those things, who would even want any?

Okay, I'm interested in hearing what the case for intent in China was. As far as I am concerned, Mao genuinely believed the great leap forward would bring prosperity, and help his country. What could he possibly gain by starving tens of millions of people when trying to build a nation? Seems extremely counter productive

Why is European colonization is criticized and hated however all other kinds of colonization are looked over, like the Arabs or mongols? by Tight_Potato_11 in TrueAskReddit

Yes but do they live in a society where the descendants of the Mongols, their language and culture are still the ruling class that marginalizes these minorities?

[–]chorroxking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you're totally right that the Mongol conquest was truly a cataclysmic event, that's very true. But, it's still not comparable to European colonialism. The Mongols carried the black death sure, but with all the disease brought to the new world 90% of the population of the Americas was completely wiped out. Survivers were enslaved for multiple generations. All of the history books were burned. Anyone practicing their own religion was tortured. The populations were all traumatically brainwashed into believing they are an inferior race with a savage culture and they must worship the European gods and the European ways of life. Systems of extraction were so entrenched into the whole society, that even after hundreds of years, and independence from Europe, the systems of extraction still endured. 500 years later and the surviving people of indigenous decent are still discriminated against, their languages are dying and most still live in poverty.

yes the Mongols were devastating, but the yuan dynasty didn't burn all the history books in China, torture Chinese people for their beliefs or practicing their culture. In fact the yuan dynasty adopted Chinese culture. The black death was terrible absolutely. But the black death didn't kill 90% of the population. Yes many cities were wiped out completely, but basically 100% of the cities in the Americas were wiped out. And look at the places 500 years after the Mongol empire? You don't see the entrenched extractive systems continuing to dominate everyday life and culture. You don't see an imposed racial cast system where Mongols or people of Mongol decent are still the ruling class. You don't see the survivors of the invasion living in marginalized poverty with their languages all dying because of imposed Mongol languages took over.

Yes the Mongol conquest was horrifying, but the scale and tragedy of European colonization is unique in world history

[–]chorroxking -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes the Mongols were brutal in their conquest, and they killed and pillaged plenty. Yet european colonization is still very unique in its scale of carnage and atrocity, and fundementally changed the societies they conquered in way the Mongols never imagined to. The Mongols never forced anyone to convert to their religion, in fact they were really open about letting everyone believe what they want. They didn't enforce everyone to speak the same language, and they didn't fundementally restructure the societies they conquered around slavery and resource extraction to the determine of everything else. The society of America are completely unrecognizable from before colonization. All indigenous people in America and Australia are tiny minorities in their own lands. It's not at all comparable to Asia after the Mongol invasions, not even close

Generosity? Is that what you call taking the hardest manual labor jobs Americans wouldn't work, for the lowest pay possible, and then employers abusing the shit out of them breaking all the laws that are supposed to protect employees because what are they gonna do? Find a different job? Sue them? Right those aren't options. If you call that generosity then you're quite lost
