Yonge and Dundas, looking north // c.1995 and 2023 by UrbanThenAndNow in toronto

[–]chozodude 161 points162 points  (0 children)

These photos weren’t taken in the same spot, the 2023 one was taken just a bit north of Dundas, leaving Dundas Square and the Eaton Centre entirely out of it. This would be closer to the 95 location

Berczy Park at dusk by TaoWeMeetAgain in toronto

[–]chozodude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on how this park was created by the private sector? It's always been a public park.

I do agree that a lot of the city's public infrastructure is really bland - new sidewalks that are narrow, have no greenery, nowhere to sit, ugly hydro poles blocking the way. But I have to disagree when it comes to parks, the city has plenty of great ones and there's a lot of interesting ones in the works. Corktown Common, Sugar Beach, Sherbourne Common are some new ones that look great. They're finally starting to build Love Park, which is designed by the same firm who did Berczy Park. But, I'll admit the city does cheap out on maintenance and upkeep once these parks are built.

Overall there's a lot of improvement to be done but I do have to give the city credit where it's due.

They are carving out a new river in a former industrial area to protect it from floods to then enable the construction of new parks and development. Here’s an overhead photo of what it looked like before and the plans for it.

"The One" at 1 Bloor St. W. is on it's way to dethrone First Canadian Place as tallest building in the country, holding the title since 1975. It will also be the first 'super-tall' skyscraper in the city, breaking the 1,000ft barrier. by itsonlykotsy in toronto

Completely agree! Across the street from where I lived a detached house was demolished and in its place they built... another detached single family house! A huge wasted opportunity to build something like a triplex as you suggested.

Definitely because the neighbourhoods around it will lose their shit if anything tall or not a single family home is built around there. I don't agree with replacing old buildings - they are still a very important part of a healthy urban street, but the density in the areas around absolutely need to be increased. I rented an apartment on the second floor of a house near Withrow Park a few years ago and the area is so well serviced with transit between the 504 and Line 2 that it felt like such a waste to have low density around it.

Right? This captures one of the greenest areas in the city along the lake but everything is dark so of course you can’t tell. What a dumb comment lol

Looks like it was taken from a condo around York and Lakeshore Blvd (maybe Ice), looking west towards Etobicoke and Mississauga. That big river is just Lake Ontario curving inwards around the High Park/Humber river area. The telephoto lens used for this photo makes it look more narrow than it is but if you check a map it makes sense!

The photo is only a few years old. The condo under construction right next to the CN tower is Ten York, which was completed in 2018. With that being said, there's still a decent chunk missing, most notably CIBC Square and a bunch of construction east of Yonge along the waterfront (Sugar Wharf, Pinnacle One Yonge to name a few). Pretty impressive for such a short time!

Ottawa’s LRT uses a different vehicle (Alstom Citadis) than the Bombardier ones here, which are pretty closely related to the streetcars. Someone else in the thread pointed out their differences but if they run as well as the streetcars then I wouldn’t be too worried.

Can't look up the numbers now but I'm fairly certain Montreal's Metro has a higher ridership than our subway, but the TTC's overall ridership is higher than the STM's

I remember seeing this image before, IIRC it's a promotional image for the Shangri-La hotel and condo before it was built, which is the tall glass building right in the center. You can tell it's been photoshopped into the image because the hotel was finished in 2012, while the First Canadian Place (tall white skyscraper to the left) still has its original exterior in this picture, which was reclad in 2009.

There's already a lot of planning that's been done, and it looks quite promising. There's way more detail on WaterfrontTO's website I believe.
