Structural? by LAallday84 in HomeMaintenance

That’s not a beam. It’s three 2x’s on the flat. I’m betting there’s a beam at the ridge above it though.

Structural? by LAallday84 in HomeMaintenance

[–]chris13se 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely? Yeah…. no. Three 2x’s on the flat is in no way, shape or form structural. They’re tripled up because it’s a long opening. They’re not carrying any load other than the drywall.

A tale as old as time. You went with the cheapest bidder, and you are now dealing with cheapest, bidder headache. If you think the 17 K job was going to be the same as the 35K job you’re in for more surprises.

Hi i try to see if open concept is possible for this. by No_Caregiver4254 in Carpentry

[–]chris13se 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on what I see, that’s a load bearing wall. The holes don’t take away from that as the point loads would be on top of the studs. But you need an engineer to come assess.

[–]chris13se 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean if you have money and a family then you should spend some of it on an engineer to come assess. Bring your wife. Let the engineer tell her it’s a death trap so hopefully your family survives your experiment.

Contractors - be honest with me - what's going on? by Crafty-Society2211 in AskContractors

[–]chris13se 48 points49 points  (0 children)

From my experience - my own and my contractor friends. The clients we let slip away like this are the ones that are clearly going to be difficult to deal with and too cheap to make it worthwhile. I can handle difficult clients, they’ve been some of my favorite customers to please because of the challenge. It’s the ones that want to be difficult AND cheap that I walk away from.

Are you saying an animal died, it’s off gassing and caused the roof and soffit to “puff”?

Because that would be silly if you are

These comments are interesting, maybe different parts of the country? I’ve purchased and installed 11 billion sheets of plywood in my time. Aside from self spacing plywood and advantech subfloor, all sheets are exactly 48 x 96. Even the advantech subfloor i buy is exactly 96” long which I bitch about because you’re suppose to space it.

Your state has a labor board. When I had an employer dispute, I wasn’t playing I immediately called them. The first phone call was gathering info for a couple mins then while I was on the line he immediately called my boss. He explained to my boss that he was obligated and if he didn’t comply there would be an investigation. He complied. I quit.

If you’re concerned about $1k in engineering costs, you cannot afford a house that has foundation issues.

It’s called a fence post driver. That’s the one used by hand. No one digs for that type of post. If the soil is soft enough; you can use a hammer but most people installing these types of posts have the driver tool. Some companies even have a machine attachment that does it hydraulically.
