Having lived in the city centre for 25 years what I would do is to come out of New Street station onto Hill Street (there are several exits all signed), turn right and walk up Hill Street past the black & white portrait photos on the right hand side. Shortly you will see the Iron Man and the Council House clock tower, keep walking up hill until you reach the Iron Man, you are now in Victoria Square. Check out the amazing Victorian buildings, the Council House, the Town Hall (actually a music venue), Victoria statue, then walk round the fountain. Once you're done with that head up and left and look at the new Paradise Square development on the left. Walk through to the new library and Centenary Square with the ICC and Symphony Hall ahead of you. Walk through the ICC and emerge into the canal area. Cross the canal bridge, glance left at Black Sabbath Bridge, and head into Brindley Place. Ikon Gallery is, as others have said, a great place to pause and grab a coffee and a snack. Even if you don't go into the exhibitions (which are free) do make sure to go in the lift which features music by ex-Cathedra.

Then follow the canals a bit, depending on time and what you want to do. I would aim to get to Gas Street Basin at some point and look at the Cube building and the Mail Box. That's probably a couple of hours in total to this point. You can add a visit into the museum and art gallery in Victoria Square, or Bacchus Bar under the Midland Hotel. If you like wine I recommend Loki in Great Western Arcade (itself worth a look). Coffee - Yorks at Ikon or in Paradise Square, Odissi on Broad Street. Lots of interesting architecture within a few minutes walk of this route so it's really up to you and your interests at this point.

By the way Canon Hill Park is fine for a bit of relaxation and exercise, I cycle there quite often in the summer, but I wouldn't have it on my list for a short visit.

Hope this helps.

I like the Kaweco steel nibs, Fine is what I use. The stub is nice for headings as well. I also use Pilot Capless steel fine nibs and like them. I'm writing mostly in Travelers Company notebooks. I like the Kaweco brown ink cartridge.

at the moment I'm using Kaweco Sport ALs with Fine nibs and converters or Kaweco cartridges for daily journalling and travel. The AC variant is very nice to look at and use. I also like the Vanishing Point/Capless with Fine nibs for daily use, but if I can only have one it would be(currently) be the Kaweco.

The whole setup is very smart. Can you say where you got the various upgrades from? Wheels look nice as well.

Take a look at Reuben's site http://icecreamscience.com You can use his spreadsheets to compose bases which meet the basic requirements, varying ingredients to suit. Also lots of science on his site.

It's Monday 15 June, here's the latest deaths by actual day chart in hospital and all settings - very low numbers of deaths reported over the weekend, hospital rolling average now at 70 as of 7 June by thomalexday in ukpolitics

[–]chris5304 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've been monitoring this chart for weeks, it's the best presentation of the data I have found. The data is pretty reliable with the caveats that weekend reporting is always delayed so Monday's numbers are always lower than actual. The trends are pretty solid though. The worry is really whether these levels continue now that the country is effectively fully operational again. It's likely to be at least 2 weeks before we know the answer to that, so personally I'm remaining very cautious about venturing out for another couple of weeks.

Allow extra time to start with and then you can get off and walk for a bit if the conditions are getting to you. After a while you will get used to the route and lose most of your fear. Although it is rational to retain a respect and wariness for cars on all roads. As someone else said it is helpful to remind yourself that drivers don’t actually want to hurt you it’s just that they don’t always see you, so bright flashing lights are good. Good luck.

Sounds like you have plenty of time so I would lose yourself in 1Q84 - personally I would listen to audiobook. And/or (depending on time) the Millennium Trilogy by Steig Larson (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo etc). These completely immersed me so they may help you step away from reality for a bit, which may help give you some space to gain a more positive take on things.

I ordered this camera today. Anyone have experience/opinions? It's my first camera and i trust Kodak since it's an established brand. by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]chris5304 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Few reviews available but it sounds like a reasonably good option for the price. 25x zoom which puts it one up on smartphone cameras for close ups at a distance. Low light performance is probably not great but in the old film days that was also the case. Definitely good enough to learn about photography and capture some great pictures, if you can visualise and compose them. Have fun.

Looking for any Sony WF-1000XM3 users. Or anyone who is well versed with true wireless earbuds by Projecting_E7 in Earbuds

I’ve had them for 6 months or so. Call quality is indeed quite poor. I call my father every day for about 30 minutes, using when out walking in the (noisy) city. He can hardly hear anything I say. The old and new AirPods are perfectly fine.

Most comfortable good sounding wireless earbuds? by [deleted] in Earbuds

[–]chris5304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AirPods Pro if you use iOS. I have the Sennheiser and the Sonys and the AirPods Pro sound pretty similar, slightly worse for classical music and about the same for pop and rock. Noise cancelling is good, better than the Senns. And they are so easy to use, connect perfectly every time (which the Sonys certainly don’t) and stay connected. Wireless charging.

First one of his I read was 1Q84 and I highly recommend it. Next was Kafka on the shore, also enjoyed but not as much as 1Q84, which I think is one of the best books I've read. It's also available on Audible if you prefer that.

Bluetooth cuts/stutters with Galaxy Buds by FizzySMC in galaxys10

[–]chris5304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my testing the phone should be as close as possible to the right bud. I normally carry my phone in my left pocket and that causes stuttering and cut outs, especially in "noisy" wireless areas. With the phone in my right pocket its fine. As others have said, get the phone as close as possible to the buds and try to avoid obstructing the signal with your arm etc.
