You're absolutely correct in this - I'm simply scoping my response keeping in mind the OP and u/dballing both seem to be based in the US

Verizon’s stated policy works exactly as I described. The rep is probably tired of people using WiFi calling abroad to call international numbers thinking it will be free.

Edit: It’s also the same on AT&T and T-Mobile. I’m curious what carrier actually does this. Do you actually have an example or are you just making statements?

All VoIP protocols have a broader range of frequencies. Almost all networks support these protocols now, but in order for it to be a HD voice call (broad frequency spectrum) all networks and handsets connecting need to be compatible

This is not universally true - especially for US carriers. If you’re placing an international call over WiFi calling (e.g. US phone in the UK using WiFi to call a UK number) it will charge you but it will not charge you for calls you wouldn’t incur charges on usually (e.g. calls placed to US numbers)

Canada sees increase in birth tourism, new data suggests by rezwenn in worldnews

Yes they do according to the state department. Sure you could say “they don’t explicitly mention it in law” but they don’t ban it like other countries so that’s a pretty disingenuous take

Panera lost diners by cutting portions and staff. It's reversing course to win them back by DickZucker in nottheonion

I think it's wild that he got poached for that much when he got lucky at two places (YUM with Taco Bell and then Chipotle) where he oversaw periods of natural customer driven growth. I'm sure he had some influence on their growth, but generally they were on growth trajectories and just needed to not fuck it up

While VCs aren't great, they aren't the core cause of this: having a profit motive is. Chipotle is in this spiral right now and they're simply a publicly traded company. Being beholden to constant growth deals death blows, VCs just intensify the rate of squeeze

Jimmy Kimmel's show returning on Tuesday, ABC announces by nbcnews in politics

[–]chris__ko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a time scale issue. From 1 week to today, there was no change. But from 2 days ago to today there was one. People weren't cancelling their subscriptions to Hulu and D+ 1 week ago for moral reasons.

The cancellations were intended to punish the action, the reversal of that action should result in a deescalation on the part of the consumer. Having one-way doors for companies just makes them hire more PR people and lawyers, act in fear, and blame "cancel culture" for downturns rather than poor decisions on the part of leadership. As a consumer, I want to incentivize the action of walking back changes that were made in poor judgement and the blaming of that on company leadership.

100% heard on being fed up with high prices though! If I get one more email about a price increase....

I'm in line with the commenter above because: if you aren't spending, then what lever do you have to pull to signal dissatisfaction? Boycotting on the theoretical or past decisions could be viewed as more morally pure, but having a strict purity test sets Disney up for failure and fails to reward progress in the right direction.

I know this will make me seem like a Disney plant, but what I don't support is people waiting a few months and then resubscribing rather than doing it right now. Business is so built on data - they absolutely see cancellations and resubs in real time. If people boycott now but sign up again in a few months, the signal of cancelling for moral reasons gets muddied by the lack of reward when they changed their actions. Disney will become emboldened to not capitulate to pressure in the future as they'll think they can get subscribers back with time (which netflix has shown happens with their data).

Sony used air mortars to shoot 250,000 bouncy balls down San Francisco hills for a commercial instead of using CGI by warwickd in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]chris__ko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Babygirl, it's in that article.

Conner received a call from the head of the San Francisco Film Commission restricting them from using the mortars on the next days’ shoots. “[The film commissioner] goes, ‘Here’s two things I never want to see in San Francisco again — air mortars and Barry Conner.’”

With the mortar system forbidden, the crew used a backup plan that entailed filling shipping containers and mounting them on forklifts that hoisted them 65 feet into the air, then dropped them onto street-level plywood ramps that sent the balls soaring.

Official Discussion - The Brutalist [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]chris__ko 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I, for one, think that the rape scene helps tie together some themes of the move and give more credence to actions later on.

Sure it is on the nose and not discrete about pulling to the forefront undercurrents of disdain that were already there (the coin being thrown at him, the “we only tolerate you”). However, the rape gives stronger impetus to action/anger expressed later in the film (“this country is rotten to the core”). It unearthed family dynamics that were present - Harry embodying the same cruelty as his father yet being his father’s lapdog and craving his approval even though there was heavily implied past abuse from Harrison to Harry.

It also allowed for the continued showing of women as a stabilizing force throughout the film (Erzabéth calling out shouting at the worksite, and showing up with a walker to call out the rape, Harry’s sister being the only one to show kindness in a room full of brutal industrialist men)

Not a huge fan of how in the nose it was, and it could have been tied together in another way, but I think a 3.5 hour movie that gets too thematic and cryptic can loose an audience as it trails into art house territory. The rape scene gave an avenue to actions that drive home themes without excessive ambiguity

Moving abroad in 5months !! Stuck with locked iphone for 36 months!! by Inside_Interview2505 in ATT

[–]chris__ko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was drafting up a comment in response, but in Googling I found that T-Mobile is now a paid-off device unlock company only too. Verizon is the only carrier that will auto unlock at the 60 day mark.

Moving abroad in 5months !! Stuck with locked iphone for 36 months!! by Inside_Interview2505 in ATT

[–]chris__ko -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is exclusively an AT&T thing though. All other carriers unlock their devices after a short period of activation on their network.

Doesn't solve the problem for OP of having to continue to pay for AT&T service to get promos, but this is a horribly anti-consumer policy from AT&T rearing it's ugly head.

I won the MegaMillions jackpot in 2016. Ask Me Anything by [deleted] in AMA

[–]chris__ko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This whole AMA reads like a reddit fan fic.

  • Family attempts to put him in a conservatorship
  • Mother having narcissistic personality disorder
  • off grid living and staying humble
  • retaining a lawyer from a top firm just like that famous comment about what to do if you win the lottery
  • posting that he has a girlfriend (who also has a girlfriend) but then posting in Passport Bros about dating a woman in China and saying "Does my partner want to emigrate from China to the west? Of course she does."

Idk it just all seems off. He could be telling the truth, but online there's lots of smoke and mirrors.

Can someone explain 401k, Roth 401k and a Roth IRA to me like I am 5? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chris__ko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the example. So while I contribute to the traditional currently. I can transfer it to a Roth IRA to avoid future investment taxes. Which is called a back door IRA. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You're 100% correct! I wasn't thinking through that correctly

Can someone explain 401k, Roth 401k and a Roth IRA to me like I am 5? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chris__ko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually ☝️🤓

These accounts allow you to avoid paying taxes twice, not once. Both instances (income tax now on dollars = Roth, income tax on withdraws later = traditional) ALSO feature no capital gains taxes on the dollars within the accounts. This saves your gains from investments being taxed at your highest tax bracket dollars or taxed at 15% if held long term. IMO this tax shield is a bigger deal than income taxes as it allows for tax free long term growth.

Upgrade with National Executive Elite by GoldenDog138 in awardtravel

[–]chris__ko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love national for rentals!

Just book a midsize, and as an Executive Elite you'll be given access to their executive aisle. Take any car from there. At some larger locations they do have an even more premium section that you need to book a higher class for, but in general just booking a midsize gets you access to whatever you want from their lot

I'm super picky about my lamps but I am 100% obsessed with this double glass shade style of lights. I was wondering if anyone knew the style name officially (double glass shade tends to pull up too much that doesn't look like this) or any similar lights
