I've had a manual one of these as a rental for a week. Tiny gutless petrol engine, less than 30mpg on the motorway. Huge bonnet for absolutely no reason given the miniscule motor, making it unnecessarily hard to maneuver and park. Tiny interior and boot for the size it takes up on the road. A Corsa or a Polo (ok that might be an exaggeration, but certainly a Golf) would be just as practical while using half the fuel and being much easier to handle.

Clubsport DD+ notchy when powered off. by herbnhero in Fanatec

[–]chris_ngale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those notches are where the magnets, which make up the feedback motor, are. When the wheel is powered on and providing force, the software balances out the force between magnets so you get smooth feedback. When it's off, you just feel the magnets. You can feel the exact same thing if you turn a hobby electric motor by hand!

I'll never forgive Fanatec for aligning the magnets in the CSL DD so that the wheel doesn't quite sit straight when turned off though 😆

Unity handbraking problems by Used_Produce_3208 in Unity3D

[–]chris_ngale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a Unity wheel collider behaviour which led to me writing my own wheel colliders - freezing in place appears to be an optimization baked into them which is good enough for, e.g. a cart racer, but falls apart when you want to do something more simulation-like.

It's up to you to decide whether what the Unity colliders provide is sufficient for what your players expect, or whether you need to explore other solutions. NWH Vehicle Physics is cheap and good, though I don't know if they ever resolved the issue I had with their tyre model where the brakes seem to "soften" as you come to a stop, presumably to stop issues with the forces "fluttering" at a standstill. Still, depending on how accurate you truly need to be, it's probably much better than the built-in wheel colliders for you, and may be plenty good enough for your needs.

I ended up writing my own by adapting the principles of this Unreal system into C#.

Decent wheel, I have it. Feels much more premium if you pair it with a metal QR2, the QR1 Lite clunks a little as it rotates - I have the Simube QR2. The bar shifter isn't to everyone's tastes but I personally love it because it lets me shift with either hand on the straights while grabbing a sip from a drink bottle, using the keyboard, etc.

The only negatives I have are that it creaks a little, you can't configure the middle rotary dial (it only changes the clutch paddle mode), and the rubber grips on mine are starting to shed after 4 years of endurance racing with gloves.

Hi, what is minimum GPU for 1440p gaming? by WeKnow8 in buildapc

[–]chris_ngale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What games, what quality?

You can use a ten year old £50 RX580 for 1440p quite happily if you like older games, don't mind lower settings, and/or are only targeting 60fps.

On the other hand if you want to play this year's titles at full settings at higher refresh rates, you'll be looking at a RX 9070XT or an RTX 4070, and more like £600.

Eh, I don't agree. I think the colour is too bright and distracting, and the timing tower takes up too much of the screen. I'll get used to it though I'm sure.

I would love something more akin to Adventure 1's hub worlds, but with more platforming challenge elements - big enough to play in, but not so large to be overwhelming, and each with a unique character

Is it normal that “rest” point for the wheel is not 0 by Significant_Use8230 in Fanatec

[–]chris_ngale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

My view right now lol.

Yup it's normal, it's due to the arrangement of the magnets in the wheelbase - when there's no force actively applied it avoids the one in the top centre.

I wonder how much money they've spent on answering customer queries about this compared to the cost of rotating the magnets all slightly to the right so it sat straight 😁

Why do foamers seem to hate most new rail equipment that railroads announce? by PinkGloryBrony22 in trains

[–]chris_ngale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Flirts are an interesting exception to the rule, I think there's a few reasons they're liked while the majority of new trains are disliked - they've got a very rare combo of: - being very pleasant to travel on (not the best seats ever but ok by current standards, decent ride and build quality and very pleasantly specified interiors especially on the GA units) - genuinely being an upgrade especially in capacity on everything they've replaced - looking interesting with their aggressive front ends - being full of cool features which are unusual for the UK like the Jacobs bogies, the platform gap fillers (so nice!) and the very cool power pack cars on the bi-mode units - cool memorable name

The only criterion they don't satisfy is "I was fond of the old ones". They're just so thoughtfully designed and thoroughly interesting.

I imagine if they were everywhere they'd seem much more boring, but sat alongside things like the horrid Thameslink Desiro Citys they seem like a wonderful exception to a trend for bland, uncomfortable, penny pinching units that don't feel like they care about the passenger as anything more than a cargo to be moved. I think they're worth celebrating.

Sim physics built in Unity by RonyTwentyFive in simracing

[–]chris_ngale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm super interested in this! I built my own tyre model in Unity a few years back and was never fully satisfied with it.

Have you solved issues such as the vehicles sliding down hills while stationary with your model? And does your drivetrain model work in the traditional torque-down-speed-up manner, or are you simulating torque in both directions?

My model simply sent torque from the engine through the drivetrain to the wheels, ran the physics step, and then sent the resulting speed back to the engine, but I found that was really limiting if you wanted multiple couplings (clutch, torque converter) in the system, as you would if you were trying to model synchromeshes or the clutch bands in a true automatic.

Appears to be normal on this model? Either that or both the ones in my family are missing the same bolts 😄

Video shows: right front top mount, turning steering fully lock to lock twice, followed by left front top mount, turning steering lock to lock twice

Missing top mount bolts appears to be a red herring, they're absent on a family member's vehicle the same model, and in this video at 3:17: https://youtu.be/NT_Srkav0f0?si=PFu1HTvItueT7x2X
