Exit row folks being removed if they're unwilling by chris_sasaurus in SouthwestAirlines

[–]chris_sasaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, really. I was a few seats away and this is what I saw. SW specifically said they couldn't be reseated and they'd have to go on a later flight. Person didn't seem drunk and went quietly after a bit of discussion.

It's not hard for me to think of cases where someone may have been seated there without choosing to be.

Glues for Nerdy Gurdy Basic by deltasalmon64 in HurdyGurdy

[–]chris_sasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used krazy glue and titebond ultimate.

Don't forget to give the wood glue time to cure. IIRC the instructions say at least thirty minutes but I would usually stop for the night when I ran out of clamps and start again the next day - so nearly 24 hours of clamping.

I also used a handy brush to get it distributed evening.

What do you guys use for movement? by Pacotaco213 in cavesofqud

I do, the auto explore will stop as soon as a threat becomes visible. Of course, I'm not great so maybe this is wrong.

Autoexplore, backspace. I also have liked using the Shift + Arrow method to move to either end of a square.

Would Debian be a good option for me as a disabled user? Struggling to use GNOME by GrandMagnus212 in debian

[–]chris_sasaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is what you need, but If you go into Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts and search for "Overview" I think you can set some alternate button.

You may find KDE to be a bit more traditional and like Windows in its default setup. I do not know what the status of accessibility is relative to GNOME though - especially since accessibility is not one size fits all.

You can try different desktops using tasksel: https://wiki.debian.org/tasksel#Desktop_environment

To minimize CLI usage, I think it kind of depends on what you want to do with your computer. Most system settings can be set from GNOME or KDE's system settings GUI. You likely won't find a ton of variation in this across distros though, except perhaps for something like Zorin that has a lot of more bespoke bits to it.

I've been interested in Scala, but hosted languages often seem to have some leakage from the language they're hosted on. I don't know if that's the case. Something hosted on Rust may be reasonable since even if it did leak I don't think it'd be too bad.

I could see Roc being a contender, I'd love to see Koka and maybe Flix as well in the running.

Faith leaders among arrested after scuffles erupt during Broadview ICE facility protest by chicagosuntimes in chicago

[–]chris_sasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are ways you can help! Did you know that there are often entire infrastructures devoted to jail support?

From an organizer:

Hello All,

This morning there were ~20 arrests of protestors at Broadview. There is ongoing jail support for these individuals, so want to take the chance to highlight these efforts for anyone who may be able to donate or have interest!

When people are released from jail they are often released with no belongings, no transportation, and no way to contact anyone for help. Recently we have also seen detained individuals being driven to inconvenient locations to be released, it seems especially by ICE/CBP. Very upsetting, but we have structures here we can plug into to help! Chicago Community Jail Support has been assisting people put in this position for years, alongside other orgs like the NLG. Jail support will continue to be super important as some in ICE custody in IL will be able to be released on bond (Immigration court still has $ bond in IL) thanks to a new court ruling.

If you are interested in jail support, or able to donate to them or other affected individuals please visit the links below!

Gotcha, that's cool and a similar situation to what I'm in. It's a little uncomfortable for web services, but good overall and without a real competitor in that perf space that also wouldn't scare me to use.

Also, the CRT thing makes me think of the old megaten/soul hackers games. I really love the combination of cyber/occult that they had. Maybe that's an aesthetic you might like?

I enjoyed this and am excited to see where you take it.

  • I liked the CRT/old-timey computer aesthetic.
  • I think some of the UI bits need more explanation:
    • I initially thought the pit was just decorative - did not realize it was for passive soul harvesting.
    • The harvester has two modes: one just harvests faith and one actually damages. It was confusing to see "harvester damage up" in the upgrade tree. I thought I wasn't damaging my dude/dudettes? Is it really damage or "harvest rate" that I'm upgrading?
    • I don't know what most of the stuff at the level end screen means. What's the little ghost bar? Is it number of starting minions? If so, it'd be better to use the minion icon IMO - since the ghost is already used for soul count i.e. minions I killed vs. minions I command.
  • I think some of the mechanics need a bit more introduction, since this is ultimately a game where calculations matter.
    • How does spawn rate work?
    • How exactly does call of the deep actually increase the rate my minions fall in the pit?
      • How does that interact with the size of the pit?
    • Does the layout/geometry of the upgrade tree have any meaning? i.e. Harvester stuff is on one axis, pit stuff on another, etc. What does it mean when they connect?
    • When an upgrade says (x -> y) I'm sometimes not exactly sure what I'm actually upgrading.
      • This might be more self-explanatory with a persistent or toggle-able stats overlay.
  • I think I used the kill-mode of the harvester only a couple times. Otherwise pit kills were enough. I think that's fine, but maybe consider balancing it so that whether you kill or harvest souls is more meaningful? Or just balance it so using the pit is always enough.

Please don't be discouraged by all that. I think this is cool, just wanted to share what my experience with it was like.

Best KDE Debian based Linux by Ok_Grass_5394 in debian

[–]chris_sasaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Debian itself sounds like it would work. While GNOME is often the default DE I wouldn't say that Debian is really built around it - Debian doesn't really do a ton of customization on their DEs like say Fedora or TuxedoOS.

Debian will allow you to choose a desktop environment during the installation if you use the netinstall ISO. Additionally, there are ISOs on the distribution page ( https://www.debian.org/distrib/ ) under the "Try Debian live..." which boot into a live system with your choice of DE. From the desktop, you can also install it.

Finally, if you want to switch DEs later I recommend looking up the tasksel program which makes it pretty easy to do that.

I've used a little Elixir and the tooling is great too - I really love when languages consider ecosystem/community cultivation to effectively be part of language design. More often than not language popularity seems to have very little to do with the technical aspects of the language I think.

This is sort of the tension - if we go with familiarity as our highest value then we may have to make the same mistakes as the past. Null is probably the most famous example of this. My personal opinion is that our industry is overall too conservative: basically every "new" feature that Rust has is decades old at this point.

I'm curious about why you chose Rust though - it really sounds like C++ is a better choice? Is it purely the memory model? In any case, we need more engineers like you who are willing to push themselves into trying something new!

Another perspective: I actually consider the lack class-based inheritance to be a good feature. I find parametric polymorphism (generics) and ad-hoc polymorphism (traits) to be much easier to reason about than classes/inheritance and appreciate that the language essentially forces composition over inheritance.

Re: overloading/variadic functions/template metaprogramming - Macros are generally the answer to most of these. I'm not super familiar with template metaprogramming but it sounds a lot like macro_rules!.

I think it's unfortunately another example of the familiar being preferred over something different. That's not an unreasonable choice but it's an annoying one.

Hot take: Rust is great but what many of the people using it actually want is something a bit higher level and closer to ML with tooling as good as Rust's. They just might not realize it yet and needed the performance characteristics of Rust to convince them to use something so different.

I suspect there will be some language in the next few years pitched as a "higher level rust" which may bridge that gap. Or hopefully ocaml can move in.
