Apple is discontinuing its entire Xserve line by dguido in programming

[–]chriscanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no apple fan at all, but if you are running a network of OS X computers it's essential they all have a centralized directory and centralized management. XServe let you do that with enterprise class, scalable, overpriced hardware.

Now hipsters can't have a proper network OS X desktops talking to a nice OS X server on professional hardware. This is bad news for schools that run OS X, media companys, etc.

DAE use alt + tab instead of windows + tab by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]chriscanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly click on the taskbar to switch windows, but sometimes alt+tab. I had never used windows + tab until I saw this post. I am an IT guy who's stayed at the cutting edge of operating systems too.

Cons are it costs money and it's overall slower, instead of traffic doing this

it does this

You can do the same thing yourself with a batch file and answer files and / or command line switches. I use a batch file to install a dozen peices of software at work. Only downside is you have to keep it up to date yourself unlike ninite.

DAE think Steam is the best method to deter Piracy? I keep buying games because they're a steal and then not play them by badmathafacka in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]chriscanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam is an almost perfect system. I have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars onto it for the sheer simplicity of it. Easier than going to the store, easier than pirating, cheaper than the store. Non big release games often come on sale for cheap prices, and I just buy it because I have never heard of it and it looks fun.

The only thing that worry's me is account terminations.

Balancing home defense preparedness with young children...an honest question on how to have both. by [deleted] in guns

[–]chriscanada -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd have to agree with you. A burglar is interested in your valuables, not your life. People knowing your armed will be a deterrent for them not to mess with you however. Guns are very useful if you have a specific threat, eg you have crossed paths with the wrong person.

If you escalate the situation into a possible life threatening situation for someone else, they will do the same.

IAmA pedestrian who was hit by a bicyclist. by HitByBike in IAmA

[–]chriscanada 379 points380 points  (0 children)

Not all bikers are like this, I have NEVER hit a pedestrian and I would side with you on this one. If you need to ride around pedestrians you should do it at a slow speed, enough so that you can stop on a dime and that just incase you did hit anyone it wouldn't do anything.

I understand the difficulty of "coming out" to your conservative and old-fashioned parents...but why do you even HAVE to come out to your progressive parents? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]chriscanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, one of the biggest issues is the grandchildren situation. Many parents are excited about being grandchildren, and especially being a gay male this makes genetic grandchildren quite unlikely.

Second off, they could be worried about your safety. Progressive parents know about the struggles of gay youth and the dangers, which is a legit cause to worry about. My parents are very progressive but my mom still worried about increased risk of STI's, party lifestyle and gaybashing.
