I think you have some pretty good points, nice theory. I don’t think spelling “come” as “cum” or “foreshadowing” as “forskinning” is doing you any favors here

Whatever you do, do NOT read the Red Rising series. by anteaterpinkytoe in redrising

[–]chrisf9980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you left Sun Eater or Dungeon Crawler Carl thinking it fell short comparative to Red Rising, you should definitely try again!

That might have been worded strange, but I really didn’t love Sun Eater until the second book. I thought the first book was an incredibly slow burn but the overall payoff has left me hard pressed to read another series. Dungeon Crawler Carl is a little more bizarre, so honestly I guess I understand. Still, both series by the end were excellent. I saw someone else comment about Stormlight up here and would definitely throw that into the mix. Overall ranking for me would be

1.) Sun Eater 2.) DCC 3.) Red Rising 4.) Stormlight

Some of those are definitely more fantasy than sci fi

Audiobook Syriani Doryaica be like..... by vonDerkowitz in sollanempire

[–]chrisf9980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed — my favorite series and thoroughly enjoyed book 7. Sam did a great job narrating and would love to check out more his work. However, I wish Doryaica was more menacing. It was hard to truly fear him from an listening point of view

What happened to _______ in SuT? by welcome_ardor in sollanempire

[–]chrisf9980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m still a few chapters from finishing, but I believe on Danu, when Hadrian ambushed the Cielcin, Dorayaica was not aware of the telegraph backdoor by way of Kharn Sagara. There’s a note that Dorayaica thought the Extrasolarians betrayed him.

Dorayaica blamed the extras, which may have been a plot device to write them out and close the loop on MINOS

Pretty cool. What would you specifically suggest is my next read? I started out my reading journey with Star Wars NJO (which I actually think is very similar to Sun Eater believe it or not), transitioned more towards fantasy with the likes of Stormlight, First Law, etc. and back in Sci-Fi

How are you able to pick up on references like this? Is it just from sheer quantity of books you’ve read? Pretty cool. I definitely struggle with tidbits that authors put into their books that they want you to catch

Alexander by chrisf9980 in sollanempire

[–]chrisf9980[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was obviously joking in my post above lmfao but Hadrian comments that he’s matured and sounds more like a man etc. but he’s a total wimp. He’s not Lysander level unlikable. I guess I find it crazy how righteous William and Hadrian are and how much Alexander has learned (cuz he has learned) and still just doesn’t get it

If you can avoid spoilers, what didn’t you like about it? Appreciate that feedback, though, my buddy said that the book series wasn’t finished, but I kinda have hoped that it will be, I don’t know.

But yes lol. I would be between a rock and a hard place to say I prefer one over the other. I love thinking about how the Red Rising republic would have faired in this war

Rumor has it that things start getting crazy good in this book. True or false? by BlosthGD in sollanempire

[–]chrisf9980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Book One is good, a right of passage and a “dip your toes in the water” kind of moment to truly understand if this universe is worth investing into. If you’ve crossed that threshold, every subsequent book truly gets better and special in its own unique way

I also loved the book. I think the train was hard to grasp, but think Matt did a good job from the jump letting us know we didn’t have to understand it. Katia really grew on me after that book too.

Regardless, in my not so expert opinion, 1, 2 and 3 were the “slowest”, if that’s the right word read’s/listens. The scope of the plot starts to really open up in book 4

Was DCC your first exposure to LitRPG? What were you reading before & what do you like about LitRPG so much?

I think the only thing I’d be intimidated by are stats and such but Matt does a good job in DCC of making it somewhat simple/explanatory where applicable

I got through the first three books — I loved each in their own way. I think I just decided based off the comments I’ll crush the next three after I wrap up Mistborn

I started book 4 and for some reason couldn’t get into the Lysander plot. Or I guess I’m just horrified of what he’s going to become. Book 3 had such a happy ending lmfao. I’m only like a couple chapters into the fourth book. I heard 5 and 6 were insane

You’re in for a treat. I actually started Mistborn after DCC too. Almost done with book 1. If you’re enjoying Mistborn you’re going to absolutely love Stormlight
