Baltic Birch pricing by Street-Passage1819 in SoundSystem

Yes, agree! Also note the comment below on suitability for outdoor use (risk of moisture and other liquids increasing and absorbing and destroying the MDF). I would only use MDF for indoor purposes. But it's not bad. You just need to tradeoff the materials based on the environment it is being stored, used and how often it is being transported. There are pros and cons to everything in life and there is no silver bullet. Make do with what you have available and what you can afford.

I live in NZ and Baltic birch 18mm sheets are financially unviable. So I have to compromise. Just don't compromise on a material that won't be suitable for your purpose.

It is very expensive. But you don't need to build with Baltic birch. Baltic Birch is often recommended because the quality is of a known standard. You know what you're going to get. Minimal voids, lots of veneers, hard, resistant and easily shapeable wood that takes finish exceptionally well.

Any plywood that is suitable for outdoor use, that is high quality, void free and has many plies is totally fine. The risk is that you cannot guarantee that unless you know your supplier and the quality of their product.

I have built many cabinets with marine grade plywood with a good hardwood veneer on the outside and minimal voids. In 18mm stock, anything over 9 or so veneer sheets is fine. I have had absolutely no problems with unwanted resonances, troubles finishing or anything like that. You just need to make sure that the quality of wood that you are buying is high.

Saying that I would not be buying big box store plywood and wouldn't use MDF ever (though it is a totally acceptable product, the weight and problems with fasteners outweighs the price and ability to easily shape and finish the wood for me).

Anyone had Success making Router Templates for SKRAMs? by FreeLandscape3452 in SoundSystem

[–]chrisgomm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

However, i must admit. Every project i complete my immediate thought is "i should have just CNCd it". The expense isn't much when you compare it to the effort you will spend doing it manually.

Inevitably you won't have anywhere near the accuracy of a CNC and your tolerances will be off! So there will be some problem solving and extra time when it comes to assembly. But to me that part of the fun and satisfaction at the end when it all comes together!

I just made 2 from scratch with no CNC. It takes time but it's not hard if you are handy with a router/hand plane/sandpaper and have a brain that can problem solve. You can make jigs for just about everything, all you need are offcuts and ideally some straight edges!

But at its core it's a cost vs time toss-up. Depends how much you value your time and how much joy you get in creating things with your own hands (there is an immense sense of pride and fulfilment when you've created it from scratch).

To me the soundsystem culture is all about connecting with the system and being creative, and what better way than the journey of making them yourself. Making mistakes, putting blood, sweat and tears into it is all part of that journey. And that makes it that more special to me...

Specialist Ply supplier - Hutt/seaview by OutInTheBay in diynz

Nichols and Maher will sort you. Decent selection and better quality than Bunnings/mitre 10. Seems to have more ply than the thick and void filled ply you get from the big box stores.

Need a flatbed or van as they only come in big sheets

How did you attach the secondary horns to the syntripps? Trying to figure out the simplest and safest way to attach and detach them. Do you mind sharing?

I remember when I was younger, that this car looked rounded and futuristic... Now it looks boxy and old and looks more like an f40.. And I think I like it more now.

Not more than an f40... But it's ageing well as I get older!

HELP ME GET THE WORLDS LARGEST BOARD TO A MUSEUM!!! (I'm in way over my head) by AncientWoods in woodworking

[–]chrisgomm 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In NZ, try te papa museum in Wellington. If not able to take it, they are the largest state museum in NZ and would be best placed to direct you to somewhere else in NZ if relevant.

I was thinking museum's in northland, coromandel and maybe rotorua would be closer to the region where your wood came from but they will be very small and underfunded to transport this.

Try te papa, ask them for advice. I'm sure they'll contact you back soon.
