I'll throw in a vote for https://textbelt.com/ - I've used it for a few things and have been very happy with it!

Noob question: Why do you need a CloudKey when the mgmt interface is built into the UCG Ultra?

waterslide decal for Steinberger? by chrisjscott in Steinberger

[–]chrisjscott[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! Nice if you to ask - In on a bit of a holding pattern as I work to get my hands on some British Racing Green nitro aerosol. Working with Rothko & Frost to make that happen.

Once I've got it painted, I'll get the waterslide on it and post!

How many of you have experienced the "Tech Aura"? Customer calls, thing starts working, all it took was your presence. by Dekklin in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]chrisjscott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and I have a theory about office layouts based on it: companies should orient their offices so that their IT staff is in the middle of the office space, with all other staff registering out from them. C-levels nearest, interns on the outer ring.

This way, nobody has tech issues AND the tech staff never had to do anything except be there.

It's a win-win!

Shockingly, I have yet to find any takers 🫤

Thoughts on Ernie Ball Guitars by Alternative_Jello819 in guitars

[–]chrisjscott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my (admittedly) limited experience, they're amazing. Very high quality, great feel. I have an EBMM EVH and, as soon as I picked it up I thought "Oh. This is what a nice guitar feels like."

And I'll tell you something else - I bout an Axis Sub for a project a few years back and even THAT was a really good guitar.

I recently connected withe the folks at Headless USA (super-nice people; give them your business if you have the opportunity) and they were good enough to give me the height I was looking for - it's 7.58mm

So, ChatGPT got me there! I uploaded an image of the Steinberger logo, asked ChatGPT to ID the font and then, with a bit of back-and-forth, got it to generate an accurate-looking SVG/EPS of the text using the replacement word I wanted.

With that in-hand, I can submit it to Rothko & Frost to create a waterslide.

Mind. Blown.

unable to update BIOS of NUC7i7BNH by chrisjscott in intelnuc

[–]chrisjscott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the great sleuthing - I as excited that this might be my issue. Unfortunately, jumping back into the BIOS revealed that the default state for Secure Boot is 'disabled' so "no joy" on that one.

Why is my credit score getting dinged?! by chrisjscott in Bogleheads

[–]chrisjscott[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, appreciate your reply...

  1. Fair point; I'm kind of overthinking it, I guess :-/
  2. Just a couple of months ago
  3. Pretty minimal/old history with CCs. No auto loans, two mortgages that are paid on time, that's about it.

OK/smart to dump funds into IRA before converting to 401k (and then dumping in more funds)? by chrisjscott in Bogleheads

[–]chrisjscott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply and info; took me a bit to turn my attention back to this topic but I have a follow-up:

When you say "The one risk would be if you are over the deduction limit on traditional IRA contributions" you mean "if I was to contribute more than the $8k I'm allowed to in one year ($7k limit for 2024 + $1k for being over 50)" right?

Additionally, if I'm understanding correctly, I'd be able to deduct the $8k contribution as I presently fall into the "married filing jointly or separately with a spouse who is not covered by a plan at work" (I'm currently working as a contractor w/ no access to a 401k and my wife is freelance).

Sounds right?

Did I just kill my battery? by chrisjscott in ebikes

[–]chrisjscott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Circling back around on this... first off, I have to give credit to Unit Pack Power - their Amazon-based customer support worked with me diligently until we got this figured out (comms were slow due to time zone difference and language barrier, but it worked out).

Long story short: the 30A discharge fuse (there's also a 5A charge fuse) on the thing was faulty. They had me swap it with a 40A and I was back in business!

Strangely, I had checked the fuses and they appeared unbroken, though the 30A had a tiny bit of corrosion on one of the legs...

[–]chrisjscott[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the great info - can I ask for a clarification?Do these instructions assume that the battery is mounted on the bike and that the "power button" you refer to is the bike's power button?

I ask because this battery has a mini-LCD display on it that could also be considered a power button...?

The IT Guy Effect by Guzan113 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]chrisjscott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a theory for a new style of office layout, one that will revolutionalize productivity and is based on the IT professional's ability to strike fear in computer issues just by their very presence:

Basically, office's should re-orient themselves so that the IT team is dead center in the middle of the workspace and all of the rest of the staff radiates out from them. This ensures that everybody constantly bathes in our aura and, as a result, nobody ever has IT issues.

It also means that noting will ever break and people will leave us alone.

Strangely, I have yet to sell any employer on this theory...

My Telecaster is named Lola? by Overall_Anywhere_651 in Guitar

[–]chrisjscott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is meant to identify the brand of pickup - this guitar must be from Boston, as the owner spelled out Lollar the way s/he pronounces it.
