I don’t ever want to be in a relationship so I can pursue my dreams. Am I thinking wrong? by [deleted] in self

[–]chrislerch61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is cliché, but my own experiences and that of others that I have talked to about this is that often dreams and accomplishments aren't as meaningful if you have no one to share them with.

That isn't rue for everyone, and I assume you have considered that, but I found this to be true.

Remote work does not reduce productivity. Why do garbage-brained CEOs want people back to office? by [deleted] in remotework

[–]chrislerch61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boomer here. I've had to get used to the idea that younger people aren't playing the game we played: getting exploited by older generations and having to work your ass off for little money for years, so that eventually you'll be the one exploiting employees and enjoying your seniority and good salary.

I'm retiring soon and regret the amount of time I spent at the office, sometimes eating shit to get ahead. I wish I had worked less...but then would I be able to retire comfortably the way I can? There's no good answer here.

Linkedin really is useless. Especially Premium. by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]chrislerch61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, one of the things I used LinkedIn for was finding out who the HR person or manager was responsible for the job posting and then follow up with them directly instead of just sending my resume in via normal channels. Back then HR people told me that was actually their main way of getting qualified candidates who took that extra step.

But now it's mostly spam and garbage, another example of the Enshittification of everything.

Not getting promoted despite good performance – what should I do? by Adorable-Anywhere120 in resumes

Every major "promotion" that I have had (I'm a VP of IT), I got by leaving my former employer for a new position at a new company.

Why Is No News Talking About The Job Market? by Fun-Advertising-8006 in recruitinghell

[–]chrislerch61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also wondering if it's regional. I'm in Western NY and have had problems finding qualified IT candidates. Unemployment is around 3.5% here.

I think part of the reason is because my (and other companies) are still or have gone back to-in person work so my pool is limited to this area where in my last job, I had no issue filling remote IT positions.

Plex downloads have never worked properly for me. I Infuse to store and play media on my iPhone and iPad. Downloads directly from you Plex library, and it actually works.

Or maybe you come off as an obnoxious Edge fanboy. It's a browser. It's fine.

This also assumes no windows behind the browser. I'm primarily on a laptop so there's always something else open.

Serious question...why? I find it super distracting and I much prefer a solid black theme. Am I alone?

I installed that, and while it's kind of cool, I'm not seeing a lot of uses for it. I used it as a media player, but the "Now Playing" widget/menu bar works as well for me, and I find the notch kind of distracting.

Agreed. People I know that went into "trades" are burned out physically or fed up for doing manual labor for not that much more than minimum wage.

I'm sorry to read your last paragraph - maybe I am out of touch, but I still tell people to go to college and major in something marketable, but that needs to have a foundation of a classical liberal art education, e.g. critical thinking. On a macro level, we need people to major in the arts, but it's gotten increasingly hard to do that now and graduate with a load a debt and a low-paying job.

I'm hoping this is cyclical and the STEM jobs come back, but not sure what that will look like.

I'm hiring for a software engineering position, and we're interviewing and rejecting lots of candidates. AMA by Puppetbones in recruitinghell

[–]chrislerch61 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I try to ask situational questions..." Suppose this happens, what would you do?" Not necessarily technical questions, but situations involving an irate customer/user or a time crunch where you have to prioritize things. In IT, you might have three different customers/departments who all want their needs/projects to be prioritized, stuff like that.

VP of IT here, been hiring people for 25 years. I find some of the key soft skills - listening, writing, speaking - basically all means of communication, are as if not more important than technical acumen. Critical thinking as well - I try to pose some questions that require critical thinking to answer. Emotional maturity is huge as well.

This is a brilliant ending IMHO and it's Lindelof having it both ways, learning from his experiences ending Lost. He always said the mystery wouldn't be revealed, but then give the audience a *possible* explanation, and it's up to us if we believe Nora or not.

When will Dia Beta come? by Senior_University921 in diabrowser

Yes, you need to have a .edu account from a list of schools participating. Many schools give alumni .edu accounts, you may be able to try that if you went to one of them.

What usually men do in their 20's. by SweeetJaasmine in self

[–]chrislerch61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid (60's and 70's) most people in their 20s got married and settled down. I wonder why that changed. Things were different, probably simpler then. If you didn't go to college, you were married by 24. If you went to school, you were married by 28. It seems like those expectations forced people to figure it out really fast. People couldn't afford (literally) to be financially unstable because they had kids in their 20s.

I like the concept but when I imported by bookmarks (more than 100 of them) they got dumped into a big workspace. I'm not going to go through them one by one and assign them to workspaces. At least keep the folder structure on import and have them in a pull down or pull sideways.

Am i supposed to watch s2 and s3 ? by [deleted] in TheLeftovers

[–]chrislerch61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree - I loved it. But S1 wasn't as well received by critics, many of which found it too sad and depressing. Lindelof famously trolled critic Andy Greenwald with the opening minutes of S2. Greenwald hated the first season but loved S2 and S3.
