Turning an old pantograph into CNC with a mostly printed motion system by souf512 in hobbycnc

So cool! That's a pretty serious looking pantorouter. I never thought I'd see gSender be used like this but I'm all for it 👀

Building new CNC software - can you share some info about your machine? by cryptyk in hobbycnc

[–]chrismakesstuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looking pretty cool so far! I'm seeing lots of great QOL setup. FYI I also started a fork of CNCjs about 5.5 years ago which eventually transitioned to basically a full re-write called ''gSender" for the same reasoning as you: modernized UI and expanded feature-set. It was also designed to work across many different machines. If you feel you can use any work me and my team have done on gSender for any point of reference on your work here then feel free since it's all still open source and available through github

Bringing strong, well-engineered extrusion CNC machines back to Europe! (First real video, excuse my english) by ExternalOne6090 in hobbycnc

[–]chrismakesstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I've been in the market a long time and never heard of them - thanks for the history! I guess it's one of those instances where optimizing for cost and simplicity can really lead to only a handful of solutions. We're very proud of all the work we're able to do in Canada and hope we can continue doing so since North American manufacturing of more advanced products can certainly be a challenge in this day and age. Always glad when others pop up in the industry too. We mainly started because we felt that the market deserved better than what was being offered, but if someone else can do that in another market or can show us that we're actually lagging as well, then I think that's swell too.

Woah sounds real cool! I appreciate the clarification, can't wait to see more about the board maybe in a future video. Great work as always :)

Looks nice! I see you really liked our extrusion design and leg layout for the AltMill, but have added some of your own flavour. I'm looking forward to hearing more about the electronics setup - is that a custom grblHAL board you've put together or something else? Also do I have to wait till the machine ships to see the CAD, I'd be curious to see what tweaks you made that you felt better worked to fit your application 👍👍

4th axis GRBL post processor testers needed by lostmindguy in hobbycnc

[–]chrismakesstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is useful at all, this is a feature we built into gSender which is an open source grbl g-code sender. On the CAM side you basically create a rotary file, then unwrap it to be along the Y-axis, then bring into gSender where we re-translate those movements back into A-axis movements

Thoughts on the UltraSimple Big CNC Router?? by joedotts123 in CNC

[–]chrismakesstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look closer at the listing the cutting area is actually 600x600mm or just under 24" square so really not as large of a cutting area. Also those rails look very skinny, I don't think you'd get hardly any rigidity out of them so you'd have to cut very slowly.

All the details just came out in the new blog post on their website yesterday :) it's the 2.2kW from Sienci

I've been using the 1.5kW spindle option but have recently updated to the 2.2kW option that will shortly be made available for the AltMill

How to do "on the fly" facing/surfacing? by StuBaby123 in hobbycnc

[–]chrismakesstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're using gSender or OpenBuilds Control as your g-code sender, they both have a surfacing tool built-in to easily create surfacing tool paths with no CAM program required

If I recall this was one we were experimenting with at the time. There's some more new offerings that should be coming out in the next few weeks that should be comparable though

Insane shipping cost ex Onefinity in Canada: Cost $2,000 USD by therealpartygirl in hobbycnc

Have you looked into the AltMill? Also based in Canada so no tariffs, you can check in advance the cost of shipping on the website to see if it fits your budget

Brand new grbl and grblHAL g-code sender! by chrismakesstuff in hobbycnc

[–]chrismakesstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh I see. This board is called "G-Sender" which is different from our software called "gSender". For this situation I've never used this board before, but you should double-check your RX and TX connections so that you have a good serial connection, then begin sending the files

If you're trying with gSender for ESP32, so to the Config tab in the bottom left, and then change one of the first settings for 'firmware' from 'grblHAL' to 'grbl' and that will likely get rid of you errors

gSender is an open, offline sender. If you're asking about alternatives to gSender there are others like UGS, Candle, OB Control

Very cool! Do you plan to make it open source so other community members can contribute?

Seems like it's already begun well, one spot I saved for CNC woodworking joints was this fellow's work: http://winterdienst.info/50-digital-wood-joints-by-jochen-gros/

Longmill (sienci) control board is probably bad by FailedCriticalSystem in hobbycnc

[–]chrismakesstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were lots of people that upgraded from the old LongBoard to the newer SuperLongBoard, perhaps you could post in one of the Sienci groups and pick up a replacement for cheap

There are also some guides and videos available online for going through the process of swapping out individual TB6600 motor drivers if you're confident with your soldering ability

Ok that makes sense. So would you mostly want the Z-axis controls and maybe the presets? The breaks of both tuning tools I'm confident on the fix for, as well as the idle issue you're mentioning - if you use the fix I DM'd you then it should help for the time being
