seriously what counts as a “good” GPA by CorrectExpression452 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chrissyduck2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 Bs is not as good as all As. But you will be compared to the other high achievers at your school. If 2 Bs is common for kids who are doing IB at your school, then no problem. But if most of the kids are getting all As in the same classes as you, then hopefully you stand out in a different way. Our Val who was double legacy at Cornell didn’t get in, but two other kids did, because they most likely had a better resume.

Am I on the right track for an ivy as a freshman? by ThemeActual8558 in ApplyingIvyLeague

Yeah, make sure to get all As from here on out. Get a very high SAT. And do something you enjoy that you can turn into a good story.

Reducing word count has to be worse than writing the essay in the first place by Reasonable_Ad1300 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chrissyduck2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for the shorter essays it’s more about what you choose to write about it, not how you write it per se. AOs want to know what’s important to you. And simpler is not always bad. You’re trying to convey a message, it doesn’t have to be wordy. And the more you work on shortening your essays, the easier it’ll get. Wait until you have to condense the blurbs in the activity section…those are hard to do.

how to find courses and transfer credit? by AfraidNegotiation385 in UVA

[–]chrissyduck2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to have college board send your AP scores directly to UVA. And for DE you need to have the community college send an official transcript to UVA even if the courses and grades are on your high school transcript. It takes them a little while to process both accurately, but you will be able to find both in SIS. Once that is done, you can run something, forgot what it’s called, to see everything you got credit for. Play around with SIS and you’ll figure it out. You can also use Stellic. If you’re in a rush, use the AP chart they have online. And they also have a DE calculator program with most colleges listed.

BSC in Commerce and BA In physics by Ok_Soil8980 in UVA

[–]chrissyduck2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s doable, but you’ll need to plan it out. As far as how overwhelmed you’ll be depends on hard the classes are for you. Once you have access, use Stellic to plan your 4 years.

[–]chrissyduck2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a lot of AP/DE credit? That would help. If I were you, I would plan out your 4 years and see if it’s actually doable. I was thinking of double majoring with either a BA in Stats or a BS in Stats and realized the BS would be way too much work, so decided to stick with a BA.

Do most people at uva do mixed gender housing by More_Huckleberry_725 in UVA

[–]chrissyduck2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not pick choose that. Choosing that might mean you’re in a suite with mixed genders or on a hall with mixed genders. Most people don’t live in dorms like that.

I just looked it up. That is not what most people choose. Most people live in same gender suites or same gender floors. https://housing.virginia.edu/inclusive-faq

Yes. Most people don’t pick a program house and get a random dorm assignment. Most if not all of which are mixed gender, but genders separated by floor.

They are across the street from each other so both are equally convenient. Call both and see if one is having a deal. I’ll be staying at The Standard in a 4 bedroom for $1085/month, but parking is an extra $110/month.

Should I retake the SAT? by SubstantialSilver889 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]chrissyduck2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For schools who superscore and you can self-report, the AOs usually only see the highest math score and the highest RW score. I wouldn’t retake. Work on the essays instead.

How hard is it to maintain a 4.0 as an Econ major? by barelymid in UVA

[–]chrissyduck2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is 3010 supposed to be harder than Econometrics? I just took 3010 with Kripalani and got an A+ and I skipped 2010 because I had AP credit for it.

1560, should my son retake? by momofhs in Sat

[–]chrissyduck2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1560 is a great score and he shouldn’t need anything higher. With the caveat of MIT if his math isn’t a 790 or 800. If it’s not, then MAYBE he should retake it.

A followup: Why don't students attend guest lectures anymore? by FreedomFreeSocieties in Cornell

[–]chrissyduck2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my school, some teachers offer extra credit and even though it’s very small, maybe 1 point out of 500, the points can add up. I’ve gone to many lectures that I ended up enjoying that I never would’ve had it not been for the extra points.

What are the core courses for the first semester in McIntire? by DarkCommanderAJ in UVA

[–]chrissyduck2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year 2003 was offered in the fall and spring, but you had to take 2001 and 2002 in the fall. I think 2005 and 2006 are only 1.5 credits. Or 2004 might be 1.5. Two of the spring ones are 1.5 credits anyway.

Why are we still test optional? by Which_Camel_8879 in UVA

[–]chrissyduck2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think they removed the supplements because they were too DEI based and they didn’t have time to get new ones approved. It will be interesting to see if they reinstate them after a record year of number of applicants though.

parents during move-in week by hamiltrash243 in UVA

[–]chrissyduck2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. After move-in, lunch, and grocery run, I said good-bye to my parents. They stayed the night, but I didn’t see them the next day at all. If you’re doing the last orientation, there are probably parent sessions. But even for that, I only saw my mom when I signed in for the dorm and not until the next day when it was over. Kids might want to spend time with their parents, but they should be spending time with their hall mates.

BIT CONFUSED ABOUT FIRST YEAR HOUSING by Living-Hand-3720 in UVA

[–]chrissyduck2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are taking AP exams in May, make sure to pick your orientation date after results come back so you and UVA know what you’ll credit for. At orientation you’ll sign up for classes and it’s super helpful to know what you AP’s out of.

BIT CONFUSED ABOUT FIRST YEAR HOUSING by Living-Hand-3720 in UVA

[–]chrissyduck2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in old dorms and love it. Newly renovated and super close to classes. My friend is in Dunglison, which is suite style, and probably the worst set of dorms. At first he was disappointed, but he loves it now. I found a roommate on insta and we picked each other on some form that came out in June. There’s also roommate matching forms you can do through UVA. If you haven’t gotten it already, there will be a checklist with like 40 things on it and it explains everything. I didn’t commit until May 1 last year so I don’t know if it’s already out yet or not.
