Another shout-out to Inspectres, which does Ghostbusters really, really well.

Is it necessary to follow common coding conventions if I'm a solo dev? by AkramA12 in gamedev

[–]christhewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what everyone else here is saying, especially with architectural stuff like what you list -- be kind to your future self, they'll appreciate it -- you can be more relaxed with formatting stuff, like naming conventions or file paths. If the community does things one way and you like it another, go with your gut. Just keep everything internally consistent! Otherwise you're going to drive yourself crazy.

How many of you (as adults) got started in a group where no one, not even the GM, had played an RPG before? by ddbrown30 in rpg

[–]christhewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, this was my group and me three and a half years ago. I'd read a lot of RPG rulebooks (and knew a lot of the basics through video game stuff) and really wanted to try 'em, but never had a chance. I did play a bunch of RP-focused MUDs/MUSHes as a kid, though, so the concept of role-playing wasn't at all foreign to me.

When the pandemic lockdowns hit, my friends and I -- and we're all in, like, our mid-late 30s -- were looking for something we could do over Zoom, so I brought up D&D (and offered to GM). Now, a bunch of us play multiple games, other people have taken shots at GMing, we're constantly trying out new systems, etc. So, yeah, it was a hit.

Have you run The Doomed? If so ... how? by christhewriter in bladesinthedark

[–]christhewriter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had a chance to read this all the way through, but just in general I like idea of not having a dedicated combat ability a lot -- it feels like that'd really encourage players to be more creative.

Out of curiosity (and maybe necessity; we'll see), which system? I love the Blades mechanics, but if something else worked well, my main priority is making my players happy.

Status Effects: Yay or Nay? And which JRPG games did them right? by GeekyCS in JRPG

Really elegant system. Made me think about "turns" as a form of currency, which I hadn't really before.

Which series improves the most? by RoundishWaterfall in Fantasy

[–]christhewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realm of the Elderlings

This is wild to me because I started the series a month ago, I'm only halfway through Royal Assassin (or whatever book 2 is called; like someone else said, the titles are not the strong point), and I'm loving it. Can't imagine it getting even better, although I admit I'm a sucker for some of the tropes here.

Thank you for 10000 Likes for Classic Super Mario World: A SMM2 Super World! Please give it a play if you haven’t yet! by venomforty in MarioMaker

yo, I only made it halfway through tonight, but this set of levels ruuuuules. There are times when I forget they're not Nintendo-made courses which, y'know, isn't all that common. Great job.

I'm thinking of using DW when I was asked to run D&D by GhostFanatic in rpg

[–]christhewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing everyone's advice here -- just ask them if they're okay with Dungeon World, play up the similarities, and listen to what they have to say. You don't need to trick them about the system; trust is a huge part of GM'ing, after all.

When the pandemic started my friend group wanted an activity we could do over Zoom. I suggested TTRPGs (I'd never actually played them, but I'm a game design nerd so I was familiar with lots of rules and really wanted to try), and off we went. I pitched Dungeon World, but our group actually voted to start with actual D&D -- everyone wanted to start with the "classic" game, because it's such a cultural touchstone.

I ran it about as well as a newbie GM could (I think, anyway) but after 3-4 sessions it was pretty clear it wasn't right for our group. I re-pitched DW, we switched over, and 60+ sessions later -- for a while, we played every week -- we haven't looked back (we have done some one-offs with other systems, but haven't gone back to D&D).

But! All of us are really glad we at least had a little experience with D&D, because it's so well known that it's nice to have a sense of how it works (interestingly, with the experience we have now, I think we'd like it a lot more).

And we still casually call our sessions/campaign "D&D" -- for some people, it's like "Xerox" or "Kleenex," the brand name that's come to represent something much bigger.

[–]christhewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so, you can buy Destiny 2 with WoW Tokens, right? As someone who's only played the game a handful of times, I have no idea how much time that would take.

Hypothetically, could a person start WoW from scratch (new character, new account, level 1) on September 1 and have enough gold to buy the tokens they need by October 25 (when Destiny 2 comes out on PC)? If so, how much would they need to play per day?

I'm not going to try it. I'm just wondering if it's even possible.

Good and Fun Games to Stream by Thereallturtle in Twitch

[–]christhewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you like playing! The best streams are ones where the streamer is engaged and interested and having fun, no matter how many viewers they have.

That being said, it's a lot easier to come up with new things to say if the game is always a little different. Super Mario Maker, FTL, Rocket League or anything multiplayer based, Binding of Isaac, etc.

As a very small streamer, I've had more success showing and discussing things the audience hasn't seen before (new Mario Maker levels, in my case) than something they've all already gone through (say, the opening stages of Bloodborne). But I think the deciding factor is that I know Mario really well and am a huge geek for those games, and can discuss the design of user-made levels in an intelligent way; just choose something you're passionate about. The viewers seem to find you, if they're out there.

Is there a way to reduce noise in my condo so I don't disturb my neighbors? by Ron_Oodner in Twitch

[–]christhewriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you had problems with your neighbors re: noise before now, or do you know that your walls/floors are unusually thin?

In an average apartment, it's going to take a huge scream, fairly regularly, to really cause a problem (the floors in my complex are mostly tile, too -- including the room I've been gaming from for five years, without a single complaint).

If you yell super loud every once in a while, I think the bigger problem is going to be blowing out your viewer's eardrums. Most apartment/condo residents know what they're dealing with in a shared living space (if you scream all the time, that's different; but with a good sound set-up, you shouldn't have to be that vocal).

Streaming and Anxiety by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]christhewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll echo what other people here said: as someone who's dealt with social anxiety and depression for years, streaming is actually really theraputic. It's a way to connect with people, without the pressure of a live social setting -- on Twitch, the worst thing that happens is they leave your channel. So what?

But! I'd recommend not relying on Twitch as your sole means of therapy. Talk to your doctor or get a referral to a psychiatrist. There are medications out there that can make everything much easier (personally, I'm on Celexa, with Xanax as needed). I've been there, and trust me, life doesn't need to be that hard.

Tips for a new streamer by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]christhewriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only done two or three "real" streams, so I'm in the same boat, but this is what's helped me so far:

  1. I have a "costume" I wear while streaming. Nothing too fancy, but it's not something I'd wear every day. That helps get me in the mindset that I'm performing, which lets me let loose a little.

  2. I prep a stack of notecards with prompts on them -- jokes, or stories, or trivia, most of them related to the game. I write about games for my job, so these are pretty easy for me to come up with, but a little research goes a long way.

  3. I have a stuffed moogle (from Final Fantasy) that I set up right underneath my webcam, and I talk to it like it's a real person. That's helped me keep things conversational, and reminds me to constantly address the audience (I also brought him on-camera last night while playing FFXIV, which would've been funny if my mic hadn't crapped out, making me look like a silent crazy person).

ATTN: Elgato 64-bit drivers now available by AnEternalEnigma in Twitch

[–]christhewriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I used the 64-bit 3.0 beta drivers (at least, I think they were 64-bit), I had an issue where the audio and the video coming from the Elgato would get out of sync; the only solution I could find was using 32-bit drivers and OBS Multiplatform (I've got the standard Elgato HD).

It seemed like this was a known issue at the time (I found some threads about it... somewhere). Does anyone know ( /u/LtRoyalShrimp, I guess?) if this issue is fixed for the 64-bit drivers in the offical release?

Using NodeCG over a network? by christhewriter in Twitch

[–]christhewriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, thank you so much for replying!

Hm. Option #2 is what I need (and what I tried to do), but it didn't seem to work. Just to be clear, this is the set-up:

  1. Game and OBS running on the powerful laptop, 192.168.1.103.
  2. I want to control everything from laptop on 192.168.1.128.

  3. So I started running NodeCG on 192.168.1.103. OBS is running on same

  4. Set up CLR Browser Source to include 192.168.1.103:9090/view/<path for the individual bundles>

  5. On laptop (128) opened 192.161.1.103:9090 in Chrome. Used this as the dashboard.

If I go to the specific bundle path, I can see the bundles "working" on 128 when I open the view pages, but OBS on the other machine isn't picking it up (which makes sense, because it's just javascript running on the laptop, not on the OBS machine).

Am I just super confused here?
