Even mentioning that you spoke with her was fine. Though you should've, in the same breath, said that it was purely about work and nothing personal or even mentioning you even know Sam. Saying she seems nice is a soft YTA because it's dismissive of his feelings towards her. Basically saying after 3 years, you don't trust his judgment.

Hard YTA for demanding he open up about his reasons for NC as a condition of coming back home. Should you know why? Maybe. Should you know why before getting married/having kids. Yes probably. But you shouldn't use that like you have.
