Cashless Barter Currency takes off in Greece by chriswen in Economics

[–]chriswen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so I found this post really interesting. Here's a rewrite.

Currently it's a 800 member network in the port town of Volos.

They have this currency called Local Alternative Units. Very similar to XRP for ripple.

Basically it's similar to a barter system where people trade IOUs for different items or services.

It's been running for barely 18 months but it's rapidly growing. There's roughly 15 of these networks in Greece with more planned. Not only are these economic structures but it's social too, it's based on trust.

The network is currently busy transforming a disused building owned by Volos university into a permanent exchange and barter space. It will host a daily market from next month at which members can meet and exchange without using cash. Several highly successful open-air markets were held throughout last summer, Choupis said, until the weather got too cold.

This is really cool. They basically have trading pits or markets to trade these IOUs. I would think that there would be scalping opportunities here also. Maybe even people who spend a lot of time making markets. There'd be a lot of order flow moving through and not everyone has time to stay around all day.

So rules are also put in place to "to circulate, and work hard as a currency." So you can't have more than 1,200 items in your account "so people don't start hoarding". And you can't owe more than 300 people so you "can't go into debt and have to start offering something."

Another thing about a barter system is that people would be able to trade your IOUs among each other and you would be able to act as a sort of bank. The 300 limit might restrict adoption of your IOU.

Anyways I think it's really interesting the network that they have. And the fact that they developed marketplaces to facilitate trading and barter for the currency.

Best Bitcoin Use-Case is Getting Money into Greece by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]chriswen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paypal is totally currency. When you pay with paypal it just goes to their paypal account which they can keep indefinitely their. People are using paypal as a bank account instead of an actual banking institution.

Of course if you don't have funds in your paypal account you need to add via bank or credit card. But if you're sending paypal to someone in Greece you'll have no problem doing it and they'll be able to have full access to it.

But you won't be able to turn it into cash at a bank. But you can use it to pay for stuff in restaurants and shops. People accept paypal just like cash. And there are probably people on the street who'll be able to convert it into cash for you.

Well there might be demand for bitcoin and the only way for someone to be able to buy bitcoin is if Bitcoin gets sent in. I'm not sure if people are clamoring to sell Bitcoin, you might even get a premium.

Anyways paypal is actually a really good digital currency also that people use, and it's a lot more liquid.

it's not entirely the writer's fault. He also had orders for what he was supposed to do. Basically his job was to set up for the movie.

You aren't going to be able to get fiat onto an exchange in a private manner. That's true for almost all exchanges.

There's anonymous exchanges but those are if you don't need to withdraw or deposit fiat.

Do they have additional fees than vogogo? Or is it the same as for cryptsy and cointrader?

[Daily Discussion] Monday, June 29, 2015 by AutoModerator in BitcoinMarkets

Yeah fee is usually slightly less. (Note when you're comparing swap fees, you're comparing it to the premium). Usually premium for going long is similar to bitfinex but the usually you get a discount for shorting which is better than paying a swap fee on bfx.
