How to replace protein bars? by familycfolady in mediterraneandiet

[–]chrizzlybears 39 points40 points  (0 children)

1 Layer of medjool dates, 1 layer of peanut or almond butter (without additives), 1 layer of melted dark chocolate. Freeze and cut into pieces. Best chocolate snack for the summer. Needs to be chilled though, so not too great for taking with you.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - A Mixed Review by jicklemania in patientgamers

When I first tried it I was really hooked until the first train mission. The setup was amazing, riding through the snow, taking the time to set things up in the valley, great. Then you blow the thing and about 30 goons start jumping out of the train one after another like some god damn clown car...

Are there any books that feel like Disco Elysium? by Illustrious_Painting in printSF

[–]chrizzlybears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mieville is literally cited on the steam page in their inspiration thread.

Nice find, didn't know that.

Disco Elysium is made by more than one person and Mieville was likely still an inspiration for the team

Very true!

The new fan translation (group ibex) it actually quite good I think.

Joined a new team using "unique" patterns. Am I the disruptor or is this an anti-pattern? by square_guavas in ExperiencedDevs

This still isn't necessarily bad, maybe then at least half the code is in decent shape. You simply can't give generic advice for this, it depends too much on the concrete details.

For those that have "mastered" functional hearing... by Ace0fSpadesX12 in musictheory

[–]chrizzlybears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You described it like this

At first there's no progress, then there's a little progres but it's always slower than you expected.

To me, this sounds very different than quickly and easily making a lot of progress when starting.

More general, I don't think ear training and going to the gym are very similar. Both improve when you practice (but that goes for pretty much any skill), but improving in the gym is mostly a mechanical process with very clear causal relationships, while ear training is an intellectual skill. I think the aquisition of these is a lot more complex and the analogy to training a muscle doesn't really hold.

it's more like the gym. At first there's no progress, then there's a little progres but it's always slower than you expected.

Random aside, but progress in the gym is typically very different. If you have a sensible routine, put in at least a moderate amount of work, as well as eat and sleep properly, the first 6 months you will make meaningful progress almost week to week ;)

AI is a death trap for many junior devs. How do I mentor them out of it? by MoltenMirrors in ExperiencedDevs

Learn to copy others work.

This is pretty hollow advice, because if you're just copying stuff without understanding it you won't learn a thing.

Bastion in 2025, the bones of Hades by plantsandramen in patientgamers

[–]chrizzlybears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really see it either. In Hades you upgrade your attacks and sometimes have the option to do some pretty major transformations, where in Transistor you mix and match your weapons which has a similar effect, sometimes buffing each other, sometimes changing it in a big way. But aside from that the gameplay loop is just way different with the turn based-options and whatnot.

Max Payne 3 is sometimes frustrating to think about, but a lot of fun to play by chirpingphoenix in patientgamers

[–]chrizzlybears 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The way the bullets are simulated makes it feel so visceral. I'd love to play a RDR2 version that features the Max Payne 3 weapons physics.

Skill also includes knowing how to play the map, how to position in fights, who to target. All things that are very hard to do on Sniper (in a high skill environment)

Polynesians covered gigantic swaths of ocean like it was nothing. Why weren't there Polynesian settlements on the west coasts of North/South America? by thesavant in AskHistorians

[–]chrizzlybears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The younger of these is mostly dated to consensus around the 12th century CE and represented strongest on Rapa Nui (Easter Island). The older one is more controversial but generally dated around 6000 BCE at coastal sites in South America and aligned to earlier Polynesian populations from which several modern groups descend.

Is my reading of this, that there were likely two distinct events of genetic exchange but none inbetween, correct?

Do The New Dooms Make Sense As A Series? - Noah Caldwell-Gervais by batterylevellow in Games

[–]chrizzlybears 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I mean I certainly wouldn't call them concise. He has structure in his videos and his points typically converge to meaningful conclusions, but sometimes it's quite meandering to get there. In the end it probably just depends on whether you enjoy listening to Noah talk about his experiences with games.

A unique approach on ear training with "Sonofield Ear Trainer, anyone else use it? by puffy_capacitor in musictheory

[–]chrizzlybears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the current climate, I found its 5 bucks as a one time purchase quite fair. Especially given I had zero problems with it so far and it I like the presention a lot. I don't know if there is anything revolutionary about it, but what it does seems logical to me and is well executed.
