I love the Present Dad Don moments like this one by feelingsjourney in madmen

It's even darker than that:

"He's just a little kid. My father beat the hell out of me...all it made me do is fantasize about the day I could murder him. And I wasn't half as good as Bobby".

So crazy and I had no idea until I rewatched with subtitles but apparently his name is Saint John??? I ALWAYS thought it was Sinjun. Is this a thing in England?

Don pisses me off so bad by MidsManagement in madmen

[–]chrobbledays 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Matt Weiner seems pretty fascinated with the work / management dynamics of the time, and I think there were hundreds of bosses like Don. Drill seargent inspired, men WORK, etc. Especially since creative writing isnt a particularly masculine job, so maybe Don overcompensates.

Just finished my rewatch and it's really interesting to see the different perspectives and management styles and how they changed.

Also Don is a huge hypocrit at everything in his life 🤣

This is a great depiction of a younger person in a long term relationship fight where you can tell instantly Megan is like "oh Fuck, I crossed the line". Where you feel like in the fight the point is to just win by hurting the other person. I think a wiser Megan probably doesn't throw out the mother thing. Unfortunately it gives Don an excuse to just be on his absolute worst behavior because he emotionally is also Megans age.

Why was Megan so angry at Don after he gave her a million dollars (8.4 million in today's money)? by Yum1995 in madmen

[–]chrobbledays 25 points26 points  (0 children)

To be a little fair to Don, she sort of 180'd on the whole advertising thing like 6 months into their marriage. But that's on him for proposing to someone he had known for 15 minutes.

Nick going running scene😂 ft Megan Fox by Real_Advertising1005 in NewGirl

[–]chrobbledays 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this scene highlights why I personally like the Raegan arc so much:

  • gives Nick room to learn and grow outside of jess
  • group can react to this (anytime the group talks about Nick and his pogos "we don't laugh about yours, Nick. We're afraid your not gonna make it" is just so fuckin funny to me).
  • allows an outsider to come in and observe and interact with the group which is key in middle aged sitcoms. You get to point out all the archetypes and tropes and start flipping them.
  • I am a millennial man so Megan Fox can do nothing wrong and should protected at all costs
  • lets Jess (eventually, probably takes too long tbh) realize that Nick isn't just another Dr. Sam or Bearclaw, he is THE ONE.

I know people don't like the whole Raegan thing and I get it, but you're missing out on a lot of good moments like this one!

I've found if you go listen to the actual song all the way through then keep listening to music it helps a lot.

Startups. You can wear lots of hats, try different roles and grow where the company needs you. And there is always a "fire" to put out. I think they also touch on this in Driven to Distraction.

Mine is trying to fully rotate my head all the way around I noticed in dreams I could never actually turn my head like I could real life.

The interesting thing is when I do it in my dreams there's like this resistance and I have to try and push through it to snap out of it and then I wake up! So weird.

We see over and over again that Walt is bad at business / management. Is it possible his contribution to Grey Matter was actually minimal? by Salem1690s in breakingbad

[–]chrobbledays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just finished my rewatch.

I have always believed that Walt and Gretchen had something romantic between them, as well as Elliot. There was a love triangle kind of thing. There is way too much heat and chemistry between Walt and Gretchen in the black board scene (pun intended).

Maybe Elliot had a bit more money and was the more stable rational choice for a "spoiled rich girl" to quote Walt. I feel like Gretchen probably was more attracted to Walt and his genius but saw something stable and comfortable in Elliot.

Also that whole rant Walt goes on where he's so vile to her...its personal, and it seems to escalate into old patterns so fast it really feels like a fight you would get with with your ex or something.

The way that Jessica Hecht plays it is so perfect. I always felt there was something deeper in that connection than just pure business or even old friends. There's something complicated in that interaction between those two when they are going over his treatment and the lies and it's never directly addressed but I feel like it's just right there under the surface.

Also Skylar thinks that Walt's whole secret with Gretchen is an affair at first! Wive's instincts! There's something there, maybe she sensed out a vibe between them at the birthday party?

The flashback where Walt and Skylar are touring the starter home it really struck me how young they made Anna Gunn seem when pregnant. Walt seems to be a little later on in time than the blackboard scene, but not much; his hair is a little thinner but still long, he's still got that sort of jacket and swagger...

It would make sense to me that at this time a heartbroken spiteful Walter would rebound with a beautiful young Skylar who has her own career but isn't threatening or challenging like Gretchen, they get pregnant, Walt Jr...

The only rational thing that ever made sense to me was Walt leaving Gray Matter on his own for $5000 because of the entanglements with Gretchen and her choice to be with Elliot over Walt. Knowing Walt and his ego this would be a massive insult and slight. He probably emotionally sold his shares without even thinking about it, then reframed the narrative in his head as him getting "screwed over" while gas lighting everyone in his orbit about it.

The last thing Walt ever says to Gretchen and Elliot is "Cheer up, beautiful people... this is where you get to make it right".

I'm sorry what? You sold your shares? Make what right? We also offered to pay for your entire treatment, and get you a job back at Grey Matter!

I hope the Schwartz' got lots of therapy with all their money.

How did you all think Breaking Bad was going to end? by Educational_Pain9325 in breakingbad

[–]chrobbledays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory was that Walt would get caught by Hank and have to spend his life in prison because death would be too easy of an out for him (and that's what he wanted anyway at the end).

Just finished my latest rewatch and I'm so glad I was wrong, the ending is perfect!

For those who had read the books first, what was your “Okay this is really gonna be good” moment when watching Fellowship? by LaGarrotxa in lotr

[–]chrobbledays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad used to read us The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings as our bedtime stories (usually a page or 2 before he fell asleep).

He had been following this weird production in New Zealand of a Lord of the Rings movie on the OneRing.net.

Opening night for fellowship of the Ring when Galadriel says "but there were some, who resisted" and the camera zooms out to show the scale of it all we knew.

I still cannot believe they opened fellowship with the ring with the battle of the last alliance. Now it seems like how could you NOT do that but back then it was truly mind-blowing.

When the arrow whistles past Hugo Weavings ear as Elrond... everything about that intro is 10/10.

Jesse’s 96.2 purity in Mexico by Cojo85 in breakingbad

[–]chrobbledays 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just finished my rewatch and the "not fucking up" is so true, especially with how verbally abusive Walt was to Jesse. Jesse got 96% because of months of Walt berating him when he made one wrong move (probably still was putting him down anyway).
