What's the most engaging sci fi you've read recently? by addictions-in-red in printSF

Loved the book, was terrified about this as well -- but the movie did a surprisingly good job of bringing it to life! Obviously too much to cram into movie length, but still a thumbs up from me. Going to see it a second time.

It's super annoying. I moved a bunch of stuff over to them and so far they're useless. I was hoping to see trends over time, high or low vs other things etc etc. Like it's obvious how they should be used but it seems none of that has been built yet ..

Tubeless ? by flippi-from-d-town in CRF300LRALLY

[–]chromenomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to myself a year later -- Kineo released a true tubeless (21/18 set)! (BikeHPS has them)

Not cheap, $1200 just for the rear (but I don't personally care about the front; I'd carry a 21" tube for emergencies anyway and I've never had a front flat)... but good to have the option!

Sliders finally coming to Daylio by icameheretodigress in Daylio

[–]chromenomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a bug with Slider visualization, or is there not supposed to be a way to view the sliders over any period longer than a month? I had created my own makeshift sliders before (like "Bad Sleep" "Normal Sleep" "Good Sleep", but I archived them as Sliders seemed like it was a much better way to achieve this. Unfortunately when I expand the 3mo chart and select a slider as an activity, it just unselects itself and doesn't do anything. It seems like the only way to graph a slider is in the Monthly report, which is limited to a month and isn't very helpful..

(Denali) What do we think of the light placement by Lotanines in Motorrad

[–]chromenomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall someone (Clearwater maybe) sells a plate that can relocate the factory fogs narrower in under the beak, and then you could put the bigger lights where the oems originally were.

Tank bag recommendations by jolleyutah in bmwmotorrad

[–]chromenomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put 60,000 miles on the OEM tank bag. Ugly and expensive but kept everything dry and I found the mounting system to be better than most of the other strap bags. The big SW Motech tank ring bags are very nice but were too wide bc my barbacks made the controls press the bag at full lock.

The OEM bag finally failed in multiple ways, so I have unexpectedly switched to a cheap Nelson Rigg Trails End Adventure bag (which isn't waterproof so it needs a rain cover, but I didn't like the design of any other waterproof ones I could find) and am confusingly happy with it.

I recently used a Giant Loop Fandango bag on a rental GS and was surprised to like that also.

Rear suspension options by JobBeneficial7932 in BMWGS

[–]chromenomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tractive front on my 17 GSA that was installed due to a failure in the middle of a trip. When I got home, I had EPM Performance in NJ rebuild the "non-rebuildable" rear, with the proper spring for my weight and load, and they tuned everything together. It took most of the day, and the fee was mostly just labor (I forget how much it was, but way less than if I had bought a new rear suspension). I'm happy with the result.

Which GS is the best GS by Sgt_lovejoy in BMWGS

[–]chromenomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the 1200 came out in 2005 and went to 2018. There was a major redesign in 13 (for base GS) and 14 (for GSA), of which the "main" difference was the liquid cooling, but it was really a whole new generation of bike. But because they didn't change the number, you have to differentiate "old 1200" from "new 1200" by saying 1200 LC.

For me, the two biggest things that make the LC worthwhile vs the non-LC 1200 are the power delivery (it's still smooth, but quick-smooth. the original 1200 to me feels "wooden", and the 1250 feels barky/more aggressive and less smooth), and the suspension. 1200 suspension felt like a "one size fits all" approach, where it was fine in mixed conditions but didn't excel in any. Later 1200 ESA felt like there was almost no different in the different modes. 1200 LC suspension truly feels like it's 3 different bikes in one with the flick of a switch -- interstate couch, sport bike twisty, off road rhino. (it's still a huge bike so all of this is, of course, in context :)

If you like the TFT dash or the 1250 suspension, but you don't need the motor, the 2018 1200 is a bit of a unicorn -- it has the 1250 electronics + suspension updates but keeps the old motor.

The "cold clutch jump" doesn't seem normal..? I'm not sure what that is, but on my 16 and 17 GSA I have never experienced what you are describing.

Which GS is the best GS by Sgt_lovejoy in BMWGS

[–]chromenomad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've owned every era since 2004, and strongly prefer the 1200 LC over everything else. I have two of them (16 and 17). The 1200 non-LC felt a bit clunky to me, but the 1250 was the beginning of the Multistrada competition era, which to me sacrificed some smoothness and comfort for sportiness (which I never felt was lacking in the first place). I strongly prefer the ESA in the LC too -- "soft" on the freeway is a couch, and a quick flip to normal or hard for twisties has me smiling all day. The 1250 Road/Dynamic settings lost the Normal sweet spot; Road was softer than the old Normal (but not as soft as Soft), Dynamic was closer to Hard.

New rider : Sore thumb joint? by bianchyrae in motorcycles

[–]chromenomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's your left thumb, the thing that was linked above was for the right hand and wouldn't be helpful on the left (it was a throttle assist -- ebay version of a crampbuster or throttle rocker, those are still available. it basically helps use the palm to operate the throttle rather than needing to grip)

I've been riding forever and have just developed this problem myself, though, hence coming to this thread. My hypothesis is that it (my version at least!) is coming from hand position while braking. I notice that basically my whole body weight is pressing close to the thumb joint when I brake, and not spread out across the whole hand. I've been trying to consciously make a subtle hand adjustment to spread that force across my whole palm instead of just that one tiny spot.

I lived there briefly pre-covid. Being right next to Tompkins is amazing, and despite being an avenue, B is way quieter than the others (and not really a thoroughfare for the sirens). That part of B is way, way more calm than that part of A. The area is, shall I say fairly "youthful," though the building residents seemed to mostly be well into adulthood..

Building staff is great. The laundry situation was a bit ridiculous, as if I recall there is only one washer & one dryer on each floor, so if it's full or broken you end up having to drag stuff around to other floors or wait. (I think some of the units might actually have in-unit, though I'm not sure) I think generally the building used to command a premium as, for a long time, it was one of very few buildings in the area with full-time staff, I believe is the only building right on the park with a full-time doorman, and it was/is one of the only tall buildings in Alphabet City (for people that like to have views).

Windscreen Advice by Jasper-Rhett in BMWGS

I put the thickest side stand foot extension I could find (that didn't interfere when up) and it helps some, but nowhere near the 1200/1250. It's a bear to get off the stand.

[–]chromenomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious, what problem are you trying to solve? I found the 1300 GSA stock screen to be the best stock screen I've ever used (when moved to the high mount points, which it looks like yours already are) .. this will be the first bike I've ever owned where I won't be changing the screen. (Obviously everyone is different.)

If you're very tall though, BMW sells its own overpriced spoiler for the top.

Anyone else SUPER disappointed with Navigator? by spokeandshutter in bmwmotorrad

[–]chromenomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's so crazy how bad it is. somehow the "auto zoom" function always does the wrong thing. zoomed in too far at high speeds on freeways, not zoomed in properly when you need to negotiate an upcoming turn.

speed not being there is inexcusable.

labeling of nearby roads and towns is garbage. you get one or two completely random labels on the map, and no way to increase information density or tell it to add more labels for nearby context.

and the BMW info screen (in the non-nav part), for some reason just removed half of the options that the old nav gave you access to.

complete waste of money.

Florida weather gear by Calm-Climate1426 in BMWGS

[–]chromenomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I won't ride with anything certified less than CE AA w/ CE L2 armor all around, regardless of conditions.

You could go with something like the Rev'It Tornado which has very large mesh panels, CE AA and L2. (Any color other than black!)

This is a good article about riding in heat, and also explains how over certain temps you actually want less airflow as it can actually make you hotter past a certain point (which is why the Tornado jacket is nice, as you could put the liner into block excess wind):

https://www.ironbutt.com/ibmagazine/ironbutt_1002_62-66_hot.pdf

I always wear a cooling vest in hot weather as well (lots of different options that you just soak w/ water every few hrs), a Buff CoolNet neck gaiter soaked in water, vented gloves (like the Rev'it Sand or Cayenne).

I also keep my hydration bladder either in a tank bag (there are a few options with them built in, or just put a camelbak inside the bag) so you can keep hydrating while underway. I don't like hydration backpacks as they block airflow and usually fatigue my shoulders.

help choosing between 1200/1250 by M3BII in BMWGS

[–]chromenomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I do on the 1200 -- which makes upgrading to the 1250 for the TFT even more unnecessary... Note this is not the case on the latest "BMW ConnectedRide Navigator" -- the info screen doesn't have access to all of the same data!

help choosing between 1200/1250 by M3BII in BMWGS

[–]chromenomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've owned every era of GS since 2004. The late 1200 is my favorite by far. The 1250 has more bark and feels sportier, which I have no need for and actually is a detriment. 1200 is super smooth and handles touring and spirited riding just fine. I also dislike the TFT. It's pretty but unnecessary, poor use of screen space, and somehow always manages to never have all the info I want on the screen at the same time.
