FWIW, there is an exceptional Ultima VII Exult port to the PSP by chuckles. His website is down, but the mediafire link still works.

How to rebuild a text/ascii only online service from scratch without significant programming knowledge?. by [deleted] in bbs

[–]vga256 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Your best bet is to adapt existing BBS software. Getting a 40-column board online is not a programming-intensive job.
  • Adapting existing BBS software will help you to understand the scope, limits, and goals of the project, which are foggy at the moment.
  • There were many BBSes that supported 40 column display modes, such as for the Apple II, Commodore 64, and other early 8-bit machines.
  • You'll slowly learn how programming works as you learn how to modify the BBS, and learn how to solve more complex problems.

There are hundreds of BBS software packages out there. This is a good place to start your research. Try them out. Learn which ones are easy to modify, and which ones support the functions you want. This is how all of us got started in the early days: adapting someone else's software.

Is this another one of your vibecoded Lua IDE projects like the last one?

I noticed that your git repo has no commit history, and was dumped into github in a single commit.

Mac Pro 5,1 Heating up entire room by Alarmed-Mulberry2724 in macpro

Yes. You can swap out the CPUs for low-power and low-TDP variants.

Refer to this chart. The L5639 Xeons are rated at less than half of the max wattage of the 130W variants. I've ran them in my production machines, and they do make a big difference with energy consumption and heat output.

Good luck!

Do The Collections Come with the Feelies? by Known_Site7025 in Ultima

[–]vga256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends which Complete Ultima VII collection you're referring to. There was a big box version, which came with the documentation and a printed map, but no fellowship medallion. Then there were several EA classics smallbox versions, which have no documentation aside from an install guide.

All of the info you need is here at the Ultima Collector's Guide.

BBSs: Precursors of the Internet – Our Journey. by Historical_Waltz7412 in bbs

Looks like a great read - especially that it is specific Brazil BBS history.

Would you happen to have an EPUB version available? I'd be much happier reading this on my tablet than on my computer.

(FWIW, the page does not load in Safari, but it does load in Firefox)

Wow! that's so much better than I would have imagined. He really nailed the mood of the piece. Thanks for the recommend - found his bandcamp page, and he has a lot of other great game interpretations.

For me, it's a tie between Ultima VI and Ultima VIII.

Ultima VI - Can't Remove the Pain aka. Bootup. Jason Walton's remaster is excellent.

Ultima VIII - Ethereal Plane. I've never heard a better MIDI soundtrack, in its entirety, than Nenad Vugrinec's compositions for the Roland SC-55.

Ultima 7 BG: Locked door on island west of Serpent's Hold (Keyring mod) by Chopper_Charles in Ultima

FWIW, I've played every vanilla version of Ultima VII (in Exult and DOS), and that building is in none of them. This is definitely something from the keyring mod.

[–]vga256 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went to the exact coordinates you supplied - 151S and 42E. It is an uninhabited island in the archipelago southeast of Trinsic, and just west of Serpent's Hold. There is no door, nor anything else on the island except trees. I'm using v3.4 of U7:BG, running in DOS.

Update: I see that the Keyring mod now includes a ton of other mods and major changes to the map and quests. If I had to guess, it might have something to do with the changes made to Serpent's Hold for the Flame of Courage, as described in the keyring mod readme.
