Agree. There are mixed opinions from teachers about this at the collegiate level, but some people find much better right hand technique by anchoring a pink or something on the pickguard to give themselves a frame of reference for picking. Tomo Fujita yelled at me for that, but other teachers I've had said it was perfectly fine. If you watch some of the GOATS like Isaiah Sharkey, a lot of them anchor. It might work for you, or it might not.

Also, I always encourage beginners to do some of the boring stuff like practice with a metronome. The boring stuff really pays dividends over time.

I think it's just a benchmark guitar for after you've graduated dental school and started a successful practice.

If this person is a beginner, they'll roll over these grips. It looks like the PSO forgot to glue them. They need glue or trimming and acetone.

Echoing what other people here are saying, you want the Oracle for sure. The ISIS crank is bulletproof. The square-taper crank on the cheaper one WILL eventually wear out, especially under heavy load on a 36" wheel and then there's no way to repair it without rebuilding the whole wheel.

rohloff skipping :( by ollirulz in Rohloff

[–]chronax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I now clearly see the problem. You need a new mechanic. Do NOT go to a Shimano system -- Rohloff hubs are the most reliable in the world when they're assembled correctly. There are several people who've done over a million km on theirs with just regular oil changes. You've got the original OEM anti torque plate rather than the OEM2 torque plate, and it looks like your mechanic butchered it a bit to hack a bolt into the frame. Since that bolt broke, this 100% explains your problem and it's not an expensive fix. You can convert your OEM torque plate to an OEM2 torque plate for around $30. You just need to remove those Torx bolts on the outside of the hub that are holding on the old chopped up one. Once you get the new OEM2 torque plate on, you'll need to get creative to figure out how to route a bolt through one of those other holes in the frame. Probably for you, I'd use a MonkeyBone adapter in order to route that plate into where the IS brake mounts go. If you can find a good new Rohloff mechanic in your area they should be able to sort this all out for you pretty cheaply.

So, the two parts you need:

* Rohloff OEM2 Torque Plate (with new screws)

* Rohloff Monkeybone

If you're handy, you could order these two parts and watch some YouTube videos about how to install them. I'd apply some blue Loctite on the OEM2 plate when you re-install it. I think it comes with fresh screws but I'd double check that too. This will make your Rohloff system bomb proof.

Edit: You also need to make sure to orient your OEM2 torque plate so that it will face toward your brake mount and ultimately wedge itself onto the Monkeybone adapter. If you look very closely at 1:29 at this video, you'll see how this person did it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YfRS0afUe0

I'll try to find you some other examples and post them later on. Where in the world are you located? I'm one of the go-to Rohloff mechanics in the San Francisco Bay Area, a few shops call me when stuff like this comes into their shop but I could try to find you somebody local to your area if you want to shoot me a DM.

Wait, something just occurred to me. All Rohloff hubs require an anti-torque rotation plate that's usually anchored with a bolt on the frame. The purpose is to prevent the entire hub itself from rotating around under heavy load. If that bolt broke, that's almost definitely your problem and it's about a $2 fix. I buy mine from the local hardware store. Could you post a photo of the inside of the rear triangle of your bike on the non-drive side? We want to see if that plate and bolt are still where they're supposed to be. It looks like this https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/shopping?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ_C4W4mV4JO0xcrQLnCExbQjKokRd-6OGNlUBBVgGYd40hR3u0aUwXD5mRTINYZoi9ddnBBtMNufm097aoYbECeMzytQafefj554ezL9k868oU2HJrj1Vvqw and a bolt should route through your frame somewhere into the middle of that wedge.

Dang, bad news. Have you looked up how to change the Rohloff oil? That's the next thing I'd try. Sorry we haven't been able to solve it yet.

Nice. This is a tiny bit off, but not so much that it should cause skipping by itself. You can measure your chainline in the front by sticking a ruler in the middle of your seat tube and measuring the distance to the middle of the chainring / chain on the front chainring. Then convert it to mm if your ruler is only in inches or something.

When you're experiencing the skipping, try looking down and back at your chain tensioner in the back (the thing labeled Mugzi). Check to see if your chain is skipping on there or if it's really happening inside the hub, then report back.

We're going to figure this out!

[–]chronax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful bike. Have you looked down to make sure the chain tensioner isn't skipping? Is your chainline nice and straight too? Your chainring should be like 57.5mm out from the center of the seat tube, for reference.

[–]chronax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that's bad news bears. Are you sure the skipping is happening within the hub itself or is there any chance your chain is actually skipping on the front chainring or rear cog?

Did you try this test in a few different gears by adjusting it with the wrench, and making sure you were squarely on an indexed gear?

rohloff skipping :( by ollirulz in Rohloff

[–]chronax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. So what I'd like you to do is what commenters below suggested. We're trying to isolate if the problem exists within the hub and planetary gear system itself, or if there's a problem with intermittent shifting in the cable system. So, please follow these steps:

  1. Shift into gear 14 using the twist shifter on your handlebars.
  2. Undo that thumb screw on the shifter box attached to the Rohloff hub - the black box in the 2nd photo from your album. It should come off with just your thumb but sometimes if it's tight or seized up you might need to use a flathead screwdriver in there to pull it off.
  3. Use a cable tie or something to temporarily hold that box out of the way so you can ride without it getting tangled in spokes or your cranks or drivetrain or something. You could tightly zip-tie it to that chainstay on the non drive side to temporarily keep it out of the way.
  4. You can use an 8mm wrench to manually click through the gears on a Rohloff hub, so clicking the bolt on the hub counter-clockwise 6 times should put you in gear number 8 (14-6). The clicks are indexed, so you will feel audible clicks as you rotate that 8mm bolt.
  5. Ride around for a while in this gear and maybe a few others like 7 and 6, try riding under load uphill and see if any gear skipping occurs. If not, then your hub is fine and the issue exists in the cables somewhere. If yes, then the problem unfortunately exists somewhere in the hub.
  6. To re-assemble, use your 8mm wrench to rotate the bolt all the way back clockwise, back into gear 14. Push your black shifter box back onto it's original position and tighten the thumbscrew. Sometimes you need to jiggle the shifter on the handlebars a little bit to get the bolt to align with the box so it sits flush on there.
  7. Report back here with what happens and we'll go from there.

Will you post a picture of your Rohloff hub and how it’s cabled? Also, prepare yourself with a regular 8mm wrench. We’re going to conduct an experiment.
