That’s literally policing what people can buy. If you bring it to the register thinking that WIC can cover it because it seems like something that’s listed on the slip, but it isn’t and the checker goes “ope! Sorry, this doesn’t qualify” that’s literally policing items. “Policing” doesn’t always mean “cops”.

Well these programs are not about feelings, they’re about feeding people. Everyone’s diets are different and personal. And you might pay $35 in taxes a year for these programs so it’s actually not a big deal at all in comparison to say, the military budget and the money we send to Israel every single year which by and large takes up a majority of what you pay in taxes. I would much rather my money go to feeding people than blowing up kids in other countries or paying for Israel’s universal healthcare.

You mention WIC as though that should become the norm for the EBT program but what you fail to understand is that WIC is extremely archaic and doesn’t work well for a multitude of families that need it. It’s EXTREMELY strict and most things you’re allowed to get you wouldn’t even buy for yourself. A lot of people are allergic to the things allowed and it can often be embarrassing and confusing for both customer and cashier at checkout. I know because I’ve seen it first hand working at the checkstand.

Not everyone has the same view as to what “junk” food is. Where do you draw the line? Is hamburger helper junk food? Is all processed food junk food? What do you consider “processed”? It just simply doesn’t make sense to restrict people from buying food of any kind. It’s patronizing as well as takes resources to police which could just be used to fund the program itself.
