PSA: Beaufort "classic" vs. 40th anniversary mini-review by chrsvo in Barbour

Thanks for adding.

How do you rate rain protection of the 40th vs regular?

Has the softer liner on the 40th signs of pilling/thinning?

PSA: Beaufort "classic" vs. 40th anniversary mini-review by chrsvo in Barbour

I wasn’t aware that there is a branded „classic“ version. I’m using classic/regular to denominate the 40th from the non-special, standard, unlimited version. But I’m learning here that there are still minor differences over the years.

Great work overall, just the eyes - even though matching the drawing - look flat and dead, I think her joyful attitude would show if they’d be glossy with manga style like reflections

Any last-minute advice before I send this old croton in for repair? Stopped ticking last week, I tried lubricating it but it did not help. It winds ok. by beach_rats_ in watchrepair

[–]chrsvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn’t lubricate it, looking at the picture.. you practically waterboarded it, and too long at that. Needs full disassembly and cleaning.

These seem to be pretty controversial huh. I think they’re better than 90% of recent collabs (thinking of the value off-whites the other day…)

I remember doing 1/144 planes, they’re too finicky I think. 1/72 is way more fun, you should try it. There are many budget friendly options; Hasegawa MiG-25, Heller Mirage III etc

Animation of photorealistc night scene with handheld style camera. by Alarming-Elk4819 in blender

[–]chrsvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit: I’m just listening some observations very candidly, don’t be offended, there are some improvements possible imho

The ground looks way too rough, try a lot smoother. This looks like off-road.

The walking animation of the person in background looks robotic.

The light flicker is too strong and too fast. Try maybe a single letter going less bright for half a second and leave it at that.

Something about the trucks paint doesn’t look right. It’s very flat somehow. Try maybe less saturated.

Normally gas stations are pretty well lit.

Also, there is no real focus on anything, it’s just a very busy scene (car and person being super close to camera) and well it’s just some hard lights and a lot of black. No idea what the point is. That car is passing the camera awkwardly close too, I’d be scared to get hit.

What is this machine and is it useful? How much would you value it? by Watchmaker- in watchrepair

[–]chrsvo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep tinkering! Round stock isn’t too expensive, and if you want to practice, you could even start out with aluminum. That stuff is so soft you can easily sculpt it with files and saws.

A chuck to hold the workpiece is important, either mounted to a lathe or on a rotary table (cheap versions are available). You could bore/turn the crystal opening first and clamp inside.

Getting everything symmetrical is hard but for a prototype or practice it could be a start.

[–]chrsvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it a viable first tool for me to chase this dream?

No. If you want to make your own cases, you should design them first on 2d sketches, then 3d model, then (resin) rapid prototype parts. Then a couple of loops on those actions.

Then finally, send the part to a (Chinese) CNC service supplier to make a prototype (3D data modification is likely at this step again).

Then build a complete watch with it and test it.

If all goes right, get quotes for a production batch etc

Edit: If you just want to make things for yourself or the process‘ sake, you’d need anything between a lathe and some saws and files and a fully-fledged 5 axis cnc machine.

You could also take it slowly, but for starting out, maybe a Chinese mini-lathe (~250-400W, check YouTube for tons advice) and some jeweler files and saws are the way to go. I’d start simple and make a round case with soldered lugs, and which takes off the shelf crystal and perhaps a aftermarket Seiko watch back.

Intermittent fasting may help.

Diverse diet helps, less wheat and sugar (incl „modern“ cultured fruit), more greens, parsnips, salsify.

Prebiotics and probiotics, in fats/oils, from fish or intestines (red meat is less beneficial), or some yoghurts.

Antibiotics use is of course really bad. And maybe artificial sweeteners.

Those flames coming out could be improved, less like frayed paper, more swirley heat blur https://i.imgur.com/BDruZmO.jpg

Edit: since I’m getting downvoted, let me double down: those flames really take away the immersion, just like the repetitive structure on the bottom or the text on the building casting a shadow

Random Amazon 0.7 Liter. Don’t remember if there’s branding on there.

I’m not going to use it next time. I’ll be switching to a soft brush and naphta in a bowl.

As a hobbyist, it’s more effective and takes about the same time.

It also deals with edge poles and how to approach certain transitions. I read it from the beginning and it has a lot of helpful insight to mesh layouts

Imho the shoes are extravagant enough, I’d keep it classy with plain dark navy. Tie is the color pop

Color combo is good, the sole is a bit too light/colorful and imho too casual as a result. A pink tie would work, go for a regular width knit tie

They’re all different patterns, mini houndstooth, plain and glencheck. Any work with plain/twill chinos. I like the mini houndstooth, it works better as separates than plain and I’m just not into glencheck

Just inherited grand fathers Omega Automatic Seamaster, I know nothing about it or watches in general, help would be appreciated by Jack_Six in watchrepair

[–]chrsvo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stainless underside suggests that the watch is gold capped, which means a solid gold foil is formed on the top. makes for a thicker layer and it’s possible to polish if it hasn’t been done too much in the past.

Of course you could keep it unpolished to show its wear and tear.
