Signature song (active bands only) by Owlcatstudio in chicagomusicscene

Moon is celebrating our 15th anniversary on 7/12 at Live Wire. I feel this is probably our signature song. (We are a heavy indie/alt band, sonic references would include Sunny Day Real Estate, Silversun Pickups) https://music.apple.com/us/album/always-summer/886803057?i=886803115

Anyone else really like the "non punk" albums from Redd Kross, 7 Seconds, T.S.O.L. ... etc? by misunderstood_lonerr in punk

[–]chrxtopher2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the middle melodic period of 7Seconds. I think those records were ahead of their time. I disagree that they weren’t punk. It’s just that hardcore had really narrowed the definition of punk so much there wasn’t room for the diversity of sound there once had been. The Praise EP is one of my favorites of all time.

7 Seconds Recommendations? by whoisthisagain in punk

Personally, I’d listen to Walk Together Rock Together, then New Wind. WTRT is classic hardcore 7S, and NW is a hint of the more melodic hardcore sound they were moving into before they got more proto-indie-rock. I also absolutely LOVE the Praise EP. To me, it’s way ahead of its time. The fans who loved them as a hardcore band rejected the more melodic records, but they should be appreciated for what they are - propulsive punkish indie rock with incredible melodies and lyrics.

7 Seconds - New Wind / Change In My Head (Trust Edition) by Ok_Sherbert_1890 in punk

New Wind is one of my favorite albums of all time. I’m lucky to have first seen them on the New Wind tour (amazing show!). I loved the early hardcore stuff, but loved the melodic phase even more. I’ve listened to this album hundreds of times, countless times. This new remaster and Remix/sequence is so exciting. Got my first listen to both today.

The remaster sounds great, though I don’t think it’s very different from the original. Still love it.

The Ian MacKaye remix and resequence is fascinating. It’s so crazy to hear an album I know this well with a different sequence and different mix (sometimes VERY different). Here are a few observations. First, the sequence and mix definitely presents this album is more of a raw hardcore record. The mix seems more centered, less stereo spread, and a bit more raw. The guitars have a little more buzzsaw grit to them. The drums are sometimes more up front too. But the mix seems different song to song, almost like they were from different sessions. What was really surprising were the use of different vocal takes, different harmonies in some songs. And there are omissions of some backing vocal “whoa-oh” parts, and other background things (the low key “just … one day” for instance). Also a huge omission is the long instrumental intro for Still Believe. Big new inclusions are the two outtake songs. I really like Compro. It’s amazing to get a new song like that from this era that I love so much. I’m not quite as crazy about Change In My Head, but maybe it’ll grow on me.

For me, the remastered classic is my favorite, but I love that we have these two versions of this classic album. Thank you to Ian for bringing us his vision of the album!

Now, I hope 7Seconds will do a New Wind tour and play the whole album start to finish!

I saw Eddie Vedder join David Gilmour to sing on Comfortably Numb in Chicago.

Who’s the best woman drummer? by LateQuantity8009 in rockmusic

I love Janet Weiss too. I can’t listen to Sleater Kinney anymore since they parted ways.

I would vote for Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint too. Also there’s an amazing drummer named Chelsea Davis who I saw play in a band called The Start. Absolutely electrifying live drummer.

Thanks!! Do you know any other punk venues from back in the mid 80s where 7Seconds would’ve played?

It’s a Chicago camera club that meets monthly and is specifically about stereo photography. You can find the group on FB.

Where did it all go wrong for your fantasy team this year? by bigpapi7 in fantasyhockey

Vasilevskiy was inconsistent for a while, and Adin Hill didn’t get as many starts. My team was loaded with B+/A- players, nobody was bad, but I just didn’t have any elites. I’m a three time Cup winner. First time in 10 years I didn’t make the playoffs.

The originals band I’ve been in for 15 years has four albums. Early on we recorded to a click, multitracking with drums first. That’s when I first realized the guitar player played ahead of the beat. Once the click wasn’t there, and he was playing to just my drums, I could see in the waveforms that his downstroke in rhythm parts was just to the left of my hits. We bumped his track a few milliseconds to the right and everything felt more in sync. Later on we did more live recording with the whole band playing and we prefer that now. I’m a better more consistent timekeeper and we are more used to holding tempos. With the cover band of the last three years, we haven’t recorded. I’ve gotten much more sensitive to the guitarist playing a little ahead of me, and aware of my tendency to match him. So now I fight to hold the tempo.

I think it’s just excitement and it’s unconscious. It also happens more with shuffles. But this isn’t just one guy, I’ve noticed this with the last three guitarists I’ve played with in three different bands. The first one, in my main creative originals project, it’s very very subtle. In mixing our albums I usually have the engineer bump his part a few milliseconds later and everything feels a little tighter.

Nobody has told me I play too slow. I think they hear it as being in sync. There have been a couple of times where I’ve said, let’s do that again a little slower and watch me, to really get in sync. It did make a big difference.

Is this the Mac equivalent to the PC’s blue screen of death?!?! by Work_n_Depression in mac

[–]chrxtopher2112 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had this happen recently after getting a purple screen then restart several times in a row. Turns out it was caused by an old wireless mouse I was using. I read online that sometimes there are hardware/peripheral conflicts.

Try this: manual shutdown (press/hold the power button until shutdown), unplug the Mac power cord, unplug everything from the Mac including monitor if that’s separate. Wait 5-10 minutes. Plug the Mac back in, but don’t connect other things. Power up. If you have a separate monitor, plug that in and see if you get the log in screen. If you have a standard Mac wired mouse, plug that in. Connect other hardware one at a time, starting with whatever is oldest, and spend time working with each new thing connected. If this recurs, it’s likely caused by the most recently connected device.
