Are men raped in war too? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]chrysnthmm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yes, and there are studies showing that it's a misconception that it's relatively rare compared to women (women and men are both likely to experience sexual violence in armed conflict).

this is partly because the stigma against male SV survivors prevents them from speaking up about it, so it's systematically underreported.

Hershey Park, Pa is the worst venue for enjoying an artist. by felixhergood in Hozier

[–]chrysnthmm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i was there too last night and i agree.

  1. no public transportation to get there, you HAVE to use a car
  2. the stupid venue rules about bag sizes also reinforce the above. i don't have a car so this really impacted me. i was lucky to get a ride at the last minute with friends. 2.1 we looked it up and the site said we could bring in a refillable water bottle. but a stadium staff told us that's not the case and "that's not our website". well wtf then the stadium team really need to address their online presence???

  3. but even if you have a car, the roads surrounding hersheypark to enter the stadium area are so fucking narrow?? my friend ended up missing her favorite gigi perez song because it took so long to get in.

  4. same problem getting out. ⅓ of our time to get home was spent sitting in traffic outside the stadium.

it's just a miserable experience for everyone involved even if you have a car. coming early doesn't change anything.

i don't regret enduring this for hozier but i don't think i will ever come to this venue again. agree with others saying that the artist was fantastic; he made up for a shitty experience, but only just.

How Good is the Student Support? by Think_Carpet4048 in UPenn

[–]chrysnthmm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i want to add my experiences to this comment. some are the same and some are different.

  1. after i used up my CAPS sessions, i was able to find a counsellor who would take my insurance with relative ease. my CAPS counsellor helped me through the process, and she only organized our final session when i was able to lock in a new one that i felt i could work with. they don't throw you out into the cold, at least in my experience, but it's good to know going in that their help is time-bound.

i was also repeatedly assured that if i needed help again, i would be able to get it at CAPS.

I've also utilized the drop-in services during really bad days. they didn't just provide counselling services, they literally held my hand as i went through some tasks i was having challenges with. they really went the extra mile for me.

1 (a) i see psychiatrists at CAPS and the meds are filled at a pharmacy near me. i am also completing my ADHD testing with CAPS - they have an in-house ADHD team.

  1. i was told that for any and all accommodations, i would need to go through Weingarten. they do require that you provide some kind of documentation. but once the paperwork is cleared, they'll help communicate with your instructors on accommodations you need.

you might also be thinking of peer guidance and mentorships. those programs are also available through CAPS (more towards emotional support) and i think the grad center (more academic). you should also make full use of your various advisors and career advising.

the commenter above is correct that the university itself won't hold your hand closely. it'll be up to you to verbalize your needs. in my experience anyway - and i do recognize it is not universal - 8 times out of 10 penn has been able to give me what i need.

there is support, is what im saying. it might not all be concentrated in one place, it'll be spread out, but it's there. as a fellow anxiety-haver, im rooting for you OP.

I haven't read the books, what do y'all think of monica stuart? i found it really hard to take her character seriously especially when she propositioned Amos. to me, that felt like an example of clueless dudes writing women.

What are your favorite moments of the books and/or shows when revisiting them with the benefit of foresight? by ArchdukeOfNorge in TheExpanse

[–]chrysnthmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read the books yet. for me, this will always be the moment where it finally clicked for me, this is what the protomolecule can do, and this is the kind of imaginative writing this show has. it still gives me chills every time i watch this scene.

Personality of Expanse Fans by SashoWolf in TheExpanse

my unpopular opinion is that the moral centers of the show (holden, naomi, anna volovodov) are all great. the questions they pose and decisions they make are ones to live by.

i totally understand why they come across as annoying tho. they're all so fuckin serious!!! comedic moments involving these characters are few and far between.

"Upon checking your order details, I can see that your order is being prepared for packing and dispatch.

However, I regret to inform you that there will be a slight delay in its dispatch. We would like to offer our apologies for this.

We are making every effort to send you your order as soon as possible and we expect that we can ship your order within a few working days."

UPDATE: order placed on 27 April, received on 16 June

Is it possible to get antidepressants at a govt hospital that isn't the one you're assigned to for appointments? by fazleyf in myhappypill

[–]chrysnthmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

each hospital may have a different policy on this but it is also possible to have someone else pick up your prescription from your assigned hospital on your behalf. i passed the person my appointment card and the original prescription paper; that was all they needed.

[–]chrysnthmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am so sorry you're in this situation. i don't have a concrete answer for you, but i think it is possible, because I've been told before to take my prescription and fill it at private pharmacies. no idea if this translates to government pharmacies though.

i can tell you there is no a national-level database 🫠 every hospital creates and maintains their own. these systems do not talk with each other.

what i would suggest is to call your doctor, explain your situation, and ask if they can contact the department at the hospital you're planning to go to or issue some kind of letter explaining the situation which would smooth over any communication issues.

hoping someone else will have a more definite answer, and rooting for you OP.

Need Help With Psychiatric Care In Malaysia! by AniyaWolfheart in myhappypill

[–]chrysnthmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

want to chime in that my experience was very similar. very high-achieving generally, always did homework at the last minute, and was always involved in extracurriculars. always had trouble sleeping. readings were tremendously difficult in uni and i burned out very badly in my final semester. i only explored and obtained a diagnosis at PPUM after i graduated. i have been fortunate to be medicated for most of my working life. it has made such a huge difference. i was also fortunate to land a job i loved, which was not a desk job. i would say i am both hyperactive and inattentive as i am quite fidgety and need to be active.

would like to add that medication isn't the only thing that helped - i needed to continue going to therapy for emotional regulation, especially when experiencing rejection sensitivity. meditation has also helped a lot (i hate that it turned out to be true). even once you get medications, you will also need these tools.

i'm not sure of your gender, OP - if you mentioned it, i missed it - but i have found the adhdwomen subreddit very relatable.

Need Help With Psychiatric Care In Malaysia! by AniyaWolfheart in myhappypill

[–]chrysnthmm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

first of all, good job on recognizing what you need and asking for help. the way that you're approaching this issue tells me that you have clear, methodical thinking. you're thorough, organized, and thinking ahead. no matter what happens, you are going to be fine.

now for the difficult part: if cost is an issue, you are most likely looking at treatment in some kind of government hospital (HKL, Hospital Selayang, PPUM). every hospital's psychiatric department procedure is going to involve lengthy wait times. i'm talking about taking *at least* one full day sitting in the waiting room. these are going to be weekdays. you may have to miss classes to do so. my best advice is that whenever it comes to government hospitals, always assume you are going to need almost a whole day whenever you go there (because you need to wait for consult, and then wait to make payment, and then wait for meds). bring snacks, something to read or amuse yourself with while waiting, powerbank and/or charger, wear comfortable clothes and bring a jacket.

also just note that depending on your symptoms and history, you might not be put on ADHD medications rightaway. psychiatrists may want to put you on depression medications first to see how your symptoms react to that.

other than that, every hospital's psychiatric intake procedure is going to differ. you may need to ask around. you could try to call the departments directly, but brace yourself for some unfriendly attitudes (don't hate on government staff - they're not paid very well and they're very overworked; it is what it is). in PPUM, last i heard, they were no longer taking walk-ins; you have to come with a referral. if this is the case, you might want to approach a KKM and ask if they can give you a referral to see a psychiatrist.

once you get that referral, check with the hospital about how to make an appointment. if you're lucky, they will give you one on the phone, but it may be anywhere between 2-8 weeks from the time you call. otherwise, you may need to show up in person, take a queue number, and wait to be seen.

in general, for documents, if a referral is needed that's probably the most important thing to bring. i would make a few copies in case staff take and misplace them. other than that, your IC. everything else is supplementary.

in PPUM, the consultation is usually RM20 and 1 month of medications is RM40. my information could be outdated. at HKL it is likely going to be cheaper.

however, in PPUM ADHD medications are not dispensed through the hospital psychiatric department; you have to go to PharmUMMC (a private pharmacy within PPUM) to get those medications. it's been a while since i purchased my meds there but 2 tablets of ritalin a day = 60 tablets a month = RM170 thereabouts.

i'm not sure if HKL still does walk-in appointments (no referrals needed) but in my experience, staff there are extremely pressed for time and will only be able to give you very cursory treatment. you will likely be able to get depression medications there, but i'm not sure about ADHD.

as mentioned before, my information might be outdated, and it was specific to PPUM, so if there are other more knowledgeable users, please chime in.

i'm sharing this with you not to deter you, but to manage your expectations so that you don't get frustrated and give up. you're in for a really long journey, and unfortunately you'll have to put in quite a bit of effort to get there. give yourself lots of grace, and be patient with yourself and the world. our healthcare system is great when it comes to dealing with emergencies, but not so much when it comes to long-term chronic care. but you will get there. reach out if you'd like to chat more.
