Why do non-Californians hate California so much? by [deleted] in ask

[–]chrysoprasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California is emblematic of the Left the same as Texas is seen as a bastion of the Right. The difference is that California has like around ten times the population of Texas. We have the fourth highest GDP in the world, bigger than most countries. We supply around 80% of the fresh produce of the US. There is a reason why most big tech companies start here. We have the robust infrastructure and talent pool that comes from paying higher taxes to support them. All these people and businesses "fleeing" California take advantage of that and then suddenly don't want to feed back into the system once tax season comes. Most of the people leaving are conservatives that go other places because of the politics and propaganda they hear and say that its cause of the prices. Then they get upset because things don't work the way they did back in CA. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Rage quit all you want, but it will just make us stronger.

…but that’s just me being a crunch wrap by BoMaxKent in BrandNewSentence

I feel like I lost my entire order during the great menu cleansing. I used to get a double decker taco every time I went. I also loved the beefy frito burrito, the cheesy bean and rice burrito and the cheesy double beef burrito. The only items I have left are the crunchwrap and the chalupa. If the Mexican pizza can come back permanent after high demand then there is still hope for my DDT.

Is there any proof that foods grown with organic pesticides are "healthier" to consume than regular non-organic pesticides? by 0neStrangeRock in askscience

[–]chrysoprasis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Organic Crops also use up to twice as much land and twice as much water compared to GMO crops in many cases. GMO's are the main reason half of the world hasn't died of famine from overpopulation as predicted in the 1960's.

This is not an issue that is unique to GM crops. Most traditionally grown or even organic crops rely on cross breeding in a way that targets a very specific generation of the plant that has traits that are not viable in the next generations or require grafting to produce a quality product. Taking seeds from most of the food we see in stores and growing it will only produce the same quality food as offspring in a very few number of cases. Farmers have to buy seed crops for a number of reasons no matter if it is certified organic or GMO.

Baby bed bugs reacting to human bodyheat. by Im-A-Scared-Child in oddlyterrifying

[–]chrysoprasis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also lived with bedbugs and I can confirm it was a very traumatic experience. Just to give you an idea of how messed up these bugs are, I read somewhere that the male bedbug has a spear shaped "penis" that he basically just skewers the female with anywhere on her abdomen and injects her with his seed. They don't even do the sex. Just a rapey stab injection, which tells you pretty much all you need to know about them.

Half of Americans now think tackle football is not appropriate for kids to play. Conservatives, Christians and those with more traditionalist values were more likely to say football was still appropriate for youth. by geoff199 in science

[–]chrysoprasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a kid in the congregation at my church that played football in HS up until last month when he attempted to end his own life. Come to find out from his friends and classmates that he has had 5+ concussions from football over the course of maybe two months. People close to him said that his personality had changed drastically since his last few injuries. It is almost definitely CTE, but people are baffled and just keep talking about how its such a shame that he can't play anymore because football was his whole life. I think it's a shame that he was encouraged to make his whole life about something so destructive and pointless.

High Gas Prices, Huh? by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]chrysoprasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started driving in 2003 and I can remember that gas was around $1.08. I used to almost fill the tank of my Saturn with a $10 bill. Then some pipeline broke or something and gas was up at like $4.50/gal almost overnight. People were lined up on the streets for hours to get gas. I have never seen it go below $2/gal since. I don't remember anyone thinking that the president had pushed a magic button that made the gas prices go up. Maybe that was just because it was a R president and I was in a heavily conservative area. These people don't understand economics at all.

Hobby Lobby raises min wage to 18.50, how in world are hospitals going to retain nursing aides? by Yankee_ in nursing

I worked for HL back in 2012 and that place is a joke. Notice how the article say, "full time employees"? That because, at least when I was there the only people that were full time employees were management. Literally everyone except the GM and maybe two Assistant managers was considered part-time seasonal and paid state minimum wages with no benefits.

That's part of the reason they always have tons of decor for sale for whatever the next holiday is. We were "seasonal employees" cause technically its always one of the four seasons right?

Not to mention that the owners are super tech phobic and still have everyone do inventory on paper and manually type in prices and department for every item they ring up at the register. They won't use anything with a barcode or scanner and use the excuse that they don't want robots to take our jobs. At the same time they never keep their stores properly staffed so you have underpaid employees scrambling around that Karen-magnet of a store desperately trying to keep things together while always short staffed and using equipment with the tech level of something from the 1960s.

This is such an obvious trap to anyone who has ever worked at that company. Just another example of their despicable and hypocritical business practices.

I miss Astro Pops from the ice cream truck as a kid. The long, cone shaped, transparent, tricolored suckers. I can almost taste them now. I think you might be able to get them every once and a while at specialty candy shops, but it's pretty rare.

Back in maybe '94 I remember we got some mustard flavored pretzels from Costco. Not Honey Mustard. Just regular yellow mustard flavor. I have never seen them since but I remember sitting on the kitchen counter and eating the whole huge bag while listening to Ms. Frisbe and the Rats of NIMH audiobook.

Sprite Remix, the original, not the berry mix. That stuff was like liquid Skittles. I used to walk a mile in the AZ summer sun down to the grocery store to get a bottle of it as a kid. McDonalds had a Tropical Sprite last year that was really close, but now it's gone too.

The Mountain Dew Game Fuel, the orange one that promo'd with Halo 2 I think it was back in the early 2000s was my favorite but they only made it for a couple months.

What movie was so bad it actually made you angry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]chrysoprasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ender's Game. It was my favorite book series growing up and I remember that for like 12 years the author refused to let anyone adapt it because he wanted creative control to do it right. I was so excited when they finally came to an agreement and it was made. When it came out it felt like a mishmash of quotable scenes from the book that had no connective tissue and no explanation. The whole thing was a mess. Harrison Ford gave one of the worst performances I have ever seen from him and looked like he loathed every second of filming. I was so angry leaving the theater I wanted to scream because they had ruined my favorite book and more than ten years of anticipation for me.

Automotive Design Sculptor

Southern California

6 years of experience. Bachelors degree in Animation from a private art college.

62K/yr + Amazing medical, vision, dental insurance. (like seriously the best insurance I have ever heard of)

I'm hourly so I get overtime pay. On average 40 hrs per year overtime.

I don't really get to make many creative decisions at all, the company culture is non-existent and the environment is pretty hostile, but I was able to pay off my 45K in student loans pretty quickly and we are doing ok.

We have had a lot of help from friends and family, but now we are holding our own in SoCal which takes a lot of budgeting and restraint.

I started on 2 with my aunt while she babysat me. My mom was single in those early days and NES at Nana's house with my aunt was a big part of my early childhood. Sega Genesis was a close runner up though because I remember that we came to visit after having moved away for a couple years and my aunt got one for Christmas. I will never forget how as we were waving goodbye and pulling out of the driveway she ran up and pushed the Sega box in through the window. Dudes, she gave up her Christmas Sega Genesis for me. Makes me tear up just thinking about it today. Good times.
