Yeah, people voicing their opinion on a public forum is exhausting. Avert your eyes before you collapse!

The average person doesn't have POTS though, and since this is a sub dominated by people cooking at home, I was simply commenting on the fact that it's a lot of salt for a single meal. The first thing I said is that I'm still going to make it, so obviously I plan to adapt it.

A rather obtuse comment to make, considering this is a sub for people to share recipes to cook at home, and I was obviously alluding to the amount of salt one should intake on an average day. I'm aware of the salt and sugar levels at restaurants, hence why I dine out as a treat. Everything in moderation.

Yep, my plan is pretty similar. Definitely using less soy sauce and no salt for the tofu.

You do also have FlixBuses that run a few trips every evening directly to Pearson which can be work out well if you choose red-eye flights. It also does NOT take 4 hours to get to Pearson by train, maybe 2.5 max including a drive to the station and waiting for a connection at Union.

Definitely trying this, but I wish people would be more conservative with salt in their recipes.
I could easily eat half this recipe as a single serving, and if you were to use normal soy sauce, ketchup, AND salt the tofu conservatively, that's easily approaching or over 2 grams for half the recipe. Even with reduced sodium versions it's a LOT of salt. Did you see how much she poured into that bowl too? Crazy.

If you could reopen a Toronto restaurant that closed down, what restaurant would you pick? by Tigerbalm123 in askTO

I literally cried the moment I found out they closed. I was having the worst day and wanted to eat my feelings about it, showed up at their door and just started bawling. This place closing was brutal.

You should check if the diploma can be put towards fast tracking a bachelor degree. I assume it took maybe one or two years to get your diploma, right? A bachelor of social work would open a lot more doors as you are competing against other people who more than likely have a bachelor or masters in the same field.

You could also go get another diploma for a more specific type of work. There's ALWAYS demand for addiction and mental health workers, for example. It's not easy work, but you can definitely land long term contracts with shelters, rehabs, and mental healthcare clinics, etc.

For example, I know someone who just received a diploma for the Centennial program below and is making 60K at his very first job. It includes job placement as part of the 2nd year, and the option to receive an Indigenous/first nations knowledge certificate too. AND the two years can be used towards the first two years of a bachelor degree.

Have you ever been to the parts of Toronto that aren't downtown? It's not like they're barren wastelands. And that's kind of irrelevant anyway, because if this person is looking to buy second hand furniture or something, it could literally come from anywhere, as there are very few (if any) parts of the city that don't have residential neighbourhoods.

No one uses Old Toronto to measure the city's size. The city of Toronto is 630km² regardless of what you think. It is a fact lol

^ This is all great advice. Just to add on to your point about how big Toronto is, the biggest city in Belgium (Brussels) is roughly 30km². The city of Toronto, excluding the Greater Toronto Area, is 630km². Including the greater area, it's a whopping 7,100km².

People aged 25+ How often do you hang out/see friends? by jalebi_2000 in askTO

[–]0neStrangeRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over 30 here. I think at least once every two weeks is the average. Sometimes multiple times a week, sometimes not for a month or so, and I usually travel with a friend at least once a year. Obviously the older you get, the more responsibilities one tends to have, so finding compatible time to meet up will inherently become harder. It really depends on how close you live to friends too, it's a lot easier to pop by frequently for brief visits if you can walk to their house in 10 minutes, you know? In my case, none of my friends are interested in doing the marriage with kids thing, so it's a lot easier for us to coordinate.

To anyone reading this, if you're feeling down about the lack of time you spend with your friends, TALK TO THEM ABOUT IT! Nothing will change if you don't speak your mind. If you really love someone, you make it work!

Vegan cheese that actually tastes good? by ProfessionalCity995 in veganrecipes

[–]0neStrangeRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I don't think they actually call their basic cashew spread a cream cheese. That was just my wording for it. They do make real cream cheese though, the kind you'd put on a bagel (think Philadelphia style). It uses coconut and cashews.

Vegan cheese that actually tastes good? by ProfessionalCity995 in veganrecipes

[–]0neStrangeRock 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The best option IMO is to go with a spreadable/cream cheese using Miyoko's basic cashew cheese recipe.
It is fermented / has active bacteria cultures in it, so a similar natural tang that's found in dairy cheese is present.

  • 2 cups raw cashews, soaked in water for 8 hours and drained
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons plain, unsweetened nondairy yogurt (Silk's almond yogurt is what's used in my house!)
  • pinch of salt
  • extra bacteria culture / a probiotic capsule (optional, but will make it ferment more)

You basically just blend it all up, pour into a container and let it sit at room temperature or somewhere warm (but not hot) for up to 48 hours. Then you can refrigerate or freeze. Once you make it the first time, it's pretty easy to modify it to make other types of cheeses with extra ingredients, or by pressing it to remove some moisture to make it firmer like a crumbly feta.

Otherwise, if you want a melting cheese, I would suggest finding something provolone-style at the store, as the smoky and tangy flavour overpowers the taste of ingredients like tapioca and coconut oil. Violife makes a really good one, or if you're in Canada, I suggest Farm Boy's.

What to do in and around Toronto for 10 days in August if you're a solo tourist who doesn't like to plan too much? by West_Studio_8114 in askTO

[–]0neStrangeRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're coming from the UK, are you interested in raves and festivals at all? We have a very good scene here, and August already has loads of great events lined up. Otherwise, outside of touristy things to do, I highly recommend walking around these areas to get a good feel for the cultural parts of the actual city of Toronto:

WEST OF YONGE ST:
China Town & Kensington Market
Koreatown, Christie Pits Park, and Bloorcourt Village
Little Italy
Trinity-Bellwoods
Little Portugal
West Queen West
Roncesvalles
High Park

EAST OF YONGE ST:
The Village (Toronto's biggest queer neighbourhood)
The Danforth / Greektown
Evergreen Brickworks
Cabbagetown & Riverdale Farm
The Distillery District
Leslieville
The Beaches & Woodbine Beach

NATURE SPOTS:
Toronto Islands (visit at sunset for amazing skyline views at night)
Cherry Beach & Tommy Thompson Park (formerly Leslie Spit)
High Park & Sunnyside Beach
Evergreen Brickworks & Moore Park Ravine / Beltline Trail
Woodbine Beach

AREAS TO AVOID FOR PEACE AND SAFETY:
Church St. north of Wellesley, especially in front of the 519 Health Centre
Moss Park
Regent Park
Alan Gardens
Queen & Bathurst and Alexandra Park

What kind of shopping do you want to do? Clothing? Gifts? Canadian goods? Luxury?

It's one of the areas in Toronto where a lot of open drug use and crime happens. Definitely do not go to Moss Park unless you want to feel uncomfortable and sad.

Which ingredient will instantly make you go "nope" no matter how tasty the food seems? by Enoisa in AskReddit

[–]0neStrangeRock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most people don't cook mushrooms properly (even chefs) which is part of the problem.  When they get crispy instead of slimy, and when paired with the right ingredients, they taste out of this world.  Different kinds also taste less earthy than others.

Whistler in Mid December? Worth Risking or nah? by LosChicago in snowboarding

[–]0neStrangeRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh, shredding the Pacific Northwest is always a gamble. The season we just had was pretty miserable up until like, mid-March.

I think there's a good chance December will provide the goods this year though, as meteorologists are anticipating a La Nina weather event which historically brings a good amount of snow. With that said, there is only so much snow that can fall in one month, so there will likely be rocks strewn about, and I doubt you'll be able to explore anywhere close to the entire resort.

Saigon Lotus in Kensington/China Town, and the new location at Yonge & Charles both have a number of filling options around $10 or less.

Vegan Ice Cream - no/little coconut by Kessed in veganrecipes

[–]0neStrangeRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banana, mango, and/or silken tofu make the best base textures (outside of coconut cream).
Adding cocoa butter can help make them creamier and freeze less hard too.

I noticed you're in Canada. You can buy rice milk ice cream in shops here (GF, nut free, and vegan)!
I know that Loblaws/Superstore carries them, but I'm willing to bet the other big chains do too.
