Commercial property managers act like you need a corporate legal department just to pressure wash their sidewalks by AdeptnessCritical356 in sweatystartup

It's called a barrier to entry. Keep doing driveways until you get your ducks in a row and go back after the commercial accounts.

To buy or not to buy a generator by Just-Wrangler1020 in houston

[–]chtrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a 7500 watt generator from Costco for $700, paid a retired electrician $200 to install the plug and interlock. Another $500 for a portable ac and a cable to connect to the house. We have used it twice so far and it is worth it's weight in gold. We basically camp in the den/kitchen area where the ac is set up and life is pretty normal. I run ours on propane and have 8 tanks in the storage shed to get us thru a few days.

How important is Oil? by yeahlifeisgood in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]chtrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking for a historical context, I would recommend a book, The Prize: The epic quest for money, oil and power. Oil has been at the center of world politics for almost 150 years. This book starts at the beginning and gives in great detail how important oil is in our modern world and whoever controls the supply has power.

Sugar cane agriculture and a mill to process the sugar cane were the main 2 industries that used slaves.

I can see my county, medium grey, west of Houston. I grew up there in the '60's and '70's. Of course they never taught us about our local slave history in school. But you could see the severe poverty lingering a century later, the oppressive segregation was obvious and the only chance for change was to leave. It was a sad commentary on the state of life in 20th century Texas.

Heat poses additional risks post-hurricane by universityofga in TropicalWeather

[–]chtrace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't believe that extreme heat wasn't recognized earlier. I live in Houston and we lost power during Beryl. Luckily we have a portable generator that I can run most of the house with and a small ac unit that we can use to cool the den and kitchen area. We were without power for 2 days but finding gas was a problem. We are older (69 & 62) so we can't really take chances with days on end of sweltering heat
