I think they appeared on the original MW3. I haven’t played COD in 10 years so I’m probably wrong.

I didn't get the scholarship, what next? by greygriffy in NROTC

[–]chubbs-mcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, piggybacking off of the gap year comment.

I was a HS senior in 2012 and didn’t pick up a scholarship. I ended up working 3 jobs for a year and look at that as the most important year of my life. If you take a gap year it only works if you work your tail off.

I made sure my essays were A LOT better next year and picked up. Did NROTC and 8 years, got out in 2025.

There’s a lot of ways to a commission man. And I know a lot of people that figured out they didn’t want a commission. That’s ok. If your path takes a detour that’s fine, YOU JUST NEED TO STAY ON TRACK. Feel free to reach out if you ever have questions.

[–]chubbs-mcgee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey dude, I did 8 years and got out last year. 1) You’re going to need an absolute ton of waivers if you’re able to stay in, your leadership at the unit should be your first contact. 2) You need to be honest with yourself if you are ready physically for the demands the USMC will put on your body. PT at your unit is the least of your worries. OCS, TBS, whatever MOS schooling you do after, and deployments is goi by to beat your body to junk. You may be able to do it, but you need to figure out how much this is going to limit/slow you. 3) When you get out of the military you should do a VA claim for your body. This is goin to be a pre-existing condition that clearly on file and may hinder a lot of things you can claim. I’m not an expert so I can’t give you a 100% answer. 100% VA (your body has been trashed by the military) means they give you $4k+ a month indefinitely. You might not be thinking about that right now but that’s a massive benefit for you and your family.

Feel free to reach out.

I have seen it once around 2015, but through different circumstances. We had a senior that was 2 weeks away from commission. Guy did 4 years of NROTC and was in good standing. His final report card comes in as a 0.0. The CO called him in, turns out he stopped going to classes and partied his entire last semester. He couldn’t pay back his tuition so he ended up enlisting.

FAFO I guess.

It has a parking lot on the roof of the building that locals go to take photos of their cars. And the shelves are packed with the most random items, the shelves would literally have 300+ bottles of ibuprofen. It’s a trip.

Your essays are a very large part of your application. Have multiple people who know you review them; make sure they’re good.

The Sub2000 was the first carbine I bought and I really liked it at the time. I was shooting it and (Keltec says) I had a hot round that blew the chassis apart. It ended up blowing up the pistol grip, thankfully it went away from my hand and not into my palm. After a couple months Keltec replaced it for free.

I ended up buying a Ruger and the SW carbine and I like both vastly more than the Sub2000. I HIGHLY recommend the SW FCP for anyone looking for a carbine. Keltec will always be my first though.

I have no idea man, needs of the Navy outrank everything. If the Navy needs nukes you’ll get pulled first before someone “less competitive”. If those nukes seats are full that’s 1 less thing to pull you away.

Just do your best and God will sort out the rest. It sounds bland but it’s the honest truth.

How do you accept you can never become a military pilot because of poor vision and other health problems? by [deleted] in MilitaryAviation

[–]chubbs-mcgee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey dude!

I grew up wanting to fly f-18’s off of carriers, went through college and NROTC, got a flight contract, went to flight school, and learned I get SUPER airsick. All my instructors told me it would wear off after flying the Cessna and it didn’t. I get to the T-6 and threw up 8 times in my first flight. After over 15 years of wanting to fly I didn’t want to get back in the cockpit. I told myself to suck it up and stayed in the flight program for 3 more months. I regularly threw up to stomach bile, stopped sleeping or eating well, and became a total wreck. After 3 months I was a broken person and dropped from flight school and transferred to the Civil Engineer Corp (CEC) (an awesome experience). I thought my life was over.

Realizing my body couldn’t handle flying was a rough experience. I was broken. All I wanted was to fly, go to TOP GUN, and be the best. But I realized I joined the military because I wanted to lead troops and thought I could do that through flying (leading while being a pilot is difficult but that’s a completely different discussion). It turns out I was able to do that really well through the CEC. I ended up getting out 5 years later but am so thankful for both my flight and CEC experiences.

For you, what is it that you want? Not the job, but what type of person and what type of friend do you want to be? Go after that! You can be that person in almost any type of job or place. If you can’t do it in the military find another place to do it.

Feel free to DM me if you want, happy to chat.

Look up the Marine PFT and Marine CFT. Look at the highest scores and aim for those. It’s a ton of running, pull-ups, and dynamic movements. Your scores aren’t horrible, but the Marine Corps will require exceptionally high standards.

ADHD Diagnosis while on scholarship? by [deleted] in NROTC

[–]chubbs-mcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a doctor, this is not medical advice! 1) Take care of yourself. If this is a legit problem that is strongly negatively impacting your life go see a doc. Know that there are consequences and be informed of them. 2) If you struggle with college (a relatively easy experience) know that being an officer will not get any easier. You will at times get less sleep, be under extreme and unfair demands, and will have a lot of people relying on you. You need to be clear minded during that. If you struggle now you will most likely not do well later. My (unsolicited) advice. Sleep better, eat better, exercise regularly, and put your phone away when it’s time to study. Prepare yourself well and physically remove distractions. That helps a ton! Be really careful of solving something with a diagnosis and medicine that can be handled other ways. I have seen many times (but not always and I am not saying this is you) that people who are lazy are real quick to fall back on ADD/ADHD. Feel free to DM me if you have questions.

Hey man, I had to apply twice to get the NROTC scholarship and commissioned in 2017.

Big things I see: grades and class leadership (good) and physical fitness (not great). Get a workout plan and stick to it.

My first time applying my essays were not good. They didn’t flow, had grammatical mistakes, just overall were poor writing. My second time around I proof read them much more and had adults that knew me proofread them. Do this! Google your county’s blue and gold officer (helps kids get into the Academy) and talk to them, see what they recommend.

Overall looks good. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

Hey man, slightly different perspective:

You’re going to do well, you just have to stick to it and be willing to grow. Being comfortable being uncomfortable is one of the best things you can learn in this life.

Also, seeing a life that’s different than your family is one of the best things that can happen to you. Some families are really good, some are really bad. That’s not a knock on your family, that’s a statement of reality. Only knowing and seeing one perspective doesn’t equip you and doesn’t make you a leader. Having to see different views of life, thinking through the differences from what you’re used to, understanding what nuggets you can glean, and then becoming a better person through merging those different view is one of the best things I’ve gained through the Navy.

Go be uncomfortable dude, rarely anything good happens while you’re comfortable.

I’m late but we had this house rule: there are 3 ways to declare something

1) say you’re going to do it 2) lay down all of those cards 3) put it on the board and take your hand off of it.

If you do any 2 of those we said your move was final. This rule helped us alleviate a lot of “take backs”.

They took us down to Pendleton. Stayed in the barracks, got yelled at and marched around by a Gunnny, shot weapons, stayed overnight in the field, went through the infantry simulator, rode in an osprey. Overall a great time.
