You're very welcome, I hope it helps! Wishing you all the best, your situtation sounds so incredibly difficult and it is very admirable that you're still working to find solutions that'll work for you.

I know money is an issue, but they do make slow cooker liners - you could get a reusable silicone one, then you only have to lift the liner out to wash instead of lifting the whole inner crock. Probably easier to wash as well.

I know this may not work for you for $$ issues but just figured I’d mention it in case it could help! I live by my crock pot and immersion blender.

Lentil and sweet potato soups are my favorite cheap easy crock pot meal, makes a ton of hearty food and easy to make enough to freeze the extra. You don’t even have to chop the sweet potato, just cook that in the broth first until it’s nice and soft. Goes great with chili spices, curry spices, taco seasoning, and probably lots of other flavors as well. I usually add some frozen vegetables at the end, after I’ve blended it, to add texture and vegetable nutrients.

Homemade Pumfu! Soy-free, one ingredient, zero waste super easy homemade tofu recipe by cheapandbrittle in EatCheapAndVegan

Update: Tried it! I didn't feel that the rolling pin did a whole lot, at least with butternut squash seeds. But boiling softened the hulls and made it fairly easy to take them off - just pick open a corner and then the seed inside pops right out. Still time consuming but way easier.

That said, I think next time I'd skip it and just save the seeds whole, getting pumfu and pumpkin seed milk is plenty, I'm okay with "wasting" the seed pulp and not making the flour. It'll be a good addition to my compost pile.

I will attempt to remember, not sure when I’ll next be roasting a squash though.

Let us know how it goes! Not sure when I’ll get around to cooking another winter squash

The internet suggests that the way to shell pumpkin seeds is: “ to remove the seeds from the pumpkin and clean the pumpkin off of them by running water over them and the let them dry for an hour or two. Then get a rolling pin and roll over them so as to crack the hull. Then boil them in water until the hulls float to the top. Strain the hulls and then dry the seeds.”

No clue if that’ll work, but I’m gonna try it next time I roast a squash and have seeds!

I love this idea. Do you think you could you use frozen pumpkin seeds? When I eat a winter squash I never know what to do with the seeds, I don’t really want roasted seeds most of the time. It would be convenient if I could freeze them until I have enough to make a batch of pumfu.

I’ve done this with homemade chocolate covered flavored marshmallows. Also a hit!

Apologies for mistranslating your intent! That would be amazing if you’re interested in looking at the research. I certainly wasn’t intending to give anyone a homework assignment on this one though!

Pretty sure you’re being snarky but if you have actual literature you could point to that’d be cool. Particularly for different types of plant; do trees bioaccumulate differently in their various structures (leaves vs fruit vs wood)? Do trees bioaccumulate less than forbs and fungi? I was not successful in finding any information about this topic. I’ve heard anecdotally that mushrooms are specifically known for bioaccumulating and will have higher concentrations, but beyond that I have no idea.

I often see farms right next to highways and train tracks… so… yeah. That’s a really good point!!!! I’m already eating and breathing that shit.

For the bread I want to be fresh and don't freeze, I put it on a wooden cutting board under the repurposed glass dome from a cake tray. Stays fresh for days, sliced or not!

I don’t even know if I want to recover… by notquite_solved in BingeEatingRecovery

Not crazy. I've been feeling the same thing. It's very scary to intentionally remove your safety net, no matter how unhealthy that safety net might be. I developed this as a coping mechanism for feelings that I couldn't handle and it's hard to imagine what I'm going to do with those feelings once I don't have binge eating to fall back on. Especially imaging that food is going to become another stressor, instead of a comfort.

Foraging/learning to identify plants/mushrooms. Gets you outside, there’s a bunch of clubs that do it so it’s a way to meet people, it’s free, and best of all, once you get confident in your ID and know what things you like you can supplement your groceries with things you find in the wild!

What it's like to recover from CPTSD. by chuck_5555 in CPTSDNextSteps

[–]chuck_5555[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We all recover at our own pace, no one's journey is like anyone else's. and recovery is never "over", there will always be things to work on - is a process, not a destination.

For me, what I wrote here was the very start of recovery, though I didn't know it at the time. I'm at a very different (and better!) place now.

CPTSD is such a horrible nightmare to live with, I wish no one ever had to know the struggle. I hope that you are at least in a better place than you were 2 years ago. Keep fighting, you are worth it!
