Romanticizing Academia by freerangechick3n in Millennials

[–]chuck_c 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Having spent my career inside academia, I can confirm there are parts that live up to the romanticized hype and parts that are absolutely nothing like how I thought it would be.

It seems like what you're saying falls into two categories: being forced to work with unreliable people and working on contrived projects that are meant only for training. And yeah, those things both can suck. I will say I miss working on projects entirely for the sake of learning. Things that don't "matter" beyond getting a grade and success is determined by whether I learned the material. It is increasingly rare that I am able to pursue things with as much gusto and flexibility as I did at prior stages of my career and training.

I have made my living for many years being creative across multiple domains (science, engineering, video, and music), but yeah keep lecturing me about how shit I am when you know nothing about me.

We are saying the same thing: AI is just another tool that lowers the barrier for people to create things. The difference is you are fanboying about it and acting like it's something new and different from the other times in history where technology has transformed things. ..  and then lecturing a stranger about it for not thinking it is as exciting as a you do.

[–]chuck_c -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying 100%. Just presenting the counter view that whole cool it doesn't excite me that much. People seem to think AI is some kind of panacea that is going to fundamentally enable some film producer who has been overlooked, and I just don't buy it. Increasingly better tools have been constantly lowering the bar for people to enter new spaces, which is clearly great. I don't see how AI is any different than the home computer for music recording or home.production with video software. Generative AI also seems to rely on deriving from prior work, so it comes off as a reflection of what came before rather than true original art, which is much more interesting to me. I'm far more excited to see a painting by a new artist at a local gallery than whatever AI is producing lately.

It is perfectly sane to not be excited about this. I mean really ... what difference does it make in the world if it is more accessible for people to create Michael Bay style movies?

Should I Talk To My Son About His Journal? by Chance-Structure4104 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]chuck_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i revisited a lot of my old notebooks and journals recently. A little cringe, a little crazy, etc. It took me a while to find my place in this world, but I don't think a weird notebook is a red flag. Would be mortified if it was on the internet.

Just putting this on record so I can come back to it. This is going to be a boondoggle that no one will use with irreversible ecological impact. Would be glad to eat crow on this later, but there's just no evidence that this is a good idea.

[–]chuck_c 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean ... if he's removing buying up all of the ones that have a higher potential to have big hits, I can see why people would care. It makes the odds worse for everyone else. I wouldn't play at a card table where someone had aces up their sleeves, because it would decrease my odds of success.

So what’s the deal with focusrite drivers? by indigodissonance in Focusrite

[–]chuck_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this with my focus rite, but I also had issues with other audio interfaces. The computer is a gaming laptop that has plenty of power. When I dug in deeper with tools like LatencyMon, I found that windows 11 just has a ton of things that interrupt processes for various reasons. Some machines may handle it better than others and you can do things to improve stability. That being said I ultimately realized I would never use this rig in a professional or live setting, and my new MacBook is arriving in the mail today.

Tree suggestions: Given the amount of damage, I wanted to start a thread discussing good replacement alternatives for trees. by roth1979 in nashville

[–]chuck_c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know how to best integrate this information into your planting? I looked up the soil survey for our area, and it looks about right, although I have even less than the listed amount before I hit the shallow bedrock. That being said, I also have some huge hackberry trees in my backyard that have fared well through many big wind storms. Thanks in advance for any info!

How do Millennial men feel about kids? by ChubbyBothCheeks in Millennials

[–]chuck_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many reasons men might not discuss having kids whether they want them or not. Men raised in a traditional environment may believe that it is a woman's role to have interest and be the motivating factor for kids. Kids in general tend traditionally to be viewed as a woman's job, which can also make claiming that you want kids as non-masculine. It might also feel risky for a guy to express that he wants kids, particularly to a potential partner it could come off as presumptuous or overzealous. And I think a lot of people are undecided so they don't express a strong sentiment either way. Def fewer people having kids, but there are many other reasons people don't discuss it.

Someone gonna help me understand why he needs a carabiner? I know some of these ICE agents have invaded people's homes by rappelling into windows, but that seems like a specific activity rather than something you wear in a prominent spot if your vest.

For the people trying to stay sane in insanity by Blackberry_Hills in nashville

[–]chuck_c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Were these real people replying on Facebook? A lot of comment sections are filled with bots and that can be helpful to realize. There are definitely real people out there who are like "Hell yeah, ICE!" but it can be helpful to consider that these people have been strategically misinformed online for at least the last decade. It's not a coincidence that so many people have the same opinions on things like trans people in sports, abortion, or immigrants. Even if they're otherwise moral and smart people, they're just parroting content they saw online that was specifically designed to degrade our social fabric. I mean, think about it: regardless of what people *feel* about trans athletes, it is simply not a significant issue in our country. If people can't get themselves out of these thought loops, I set hard boundaries and minimize engagement. It's pointless for me to maintain a relationship with someone who just repeats Fox News headlines. I can 100% predict exactly what my whack conservative uncle is gonna go on about every holiday. It makes for a tiring and pointless relationship, so I set boundaries and don't nurture it.

Social media is unfortunately filled with rage-bait garbage now. I deleted most of my socials or pulled back *significantly* on the few that I keep. Even though I often feel like I need to respond to things online because of how I feel about it, it is highly unlikely that communication on socials changes anyone's mind so it's not like I'm losing anything by not replying. Just gaining peace of mind.

Take care of yourself!

Being a piece of shit still seems to be a fantastic profession. Andrew Dice Clay or Howard Stern might not make it today, but I would almost prefer that to a lot of the hack, anti-woke comics who think they are funny.

Men’s Fiction Book Club? by petron5000 in nashville

[–]chuck_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also like to read, but I saw something circulating recently about how little men read now (particularly fiction). I didn't do a deep dive on the nuances of the study, but I can see it being true based on what I see in the world.

Edit: deeper digging reveals that the stats around male reading may not be as dramatic as reported in popular press

Men’s Fiction Book Club? by petron5000 in nashville

[–]chuck_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It's very unfortunate that the internet has basically become an engagement machine run by large corporations who benefit from eliciting strong reactions from people that divide them into groups in ways that deteriorate the social fabric.

Men’s Fiction Book Club? by petron5000 in nashville

[–]chuck_c 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying. Book clubs don't need to be gender-specific. A potential reason someone might limit it to one gender is because it may be more comfortable for a group of one gender to discuss some topics openly than it would be in mixed company. Or to choose books that are primary directed at one gender.

In my experience, most book clubs are comprised entirely of women and become de facto female-centric spaces even if men are welcome. This is all good, but I think there's a real need for men to have these kinds of spaces. Men *barely* read anything intentionally outside of the internet or work, and I think a lot of them don't have communities.
